August 2007

I don’t know where to start as I overlook the carnage that will be now and forever be known as the CHEESESTEAK MASSACRE.

I guess El Duque was due for a stinker but why did it have to be yesterday in what was the biggest game the Mets have played since game 7 of the last years NLCS (no need to rehash that one) and again the Mets came up small.

I have no problem with Willie using Billy Wagner for two innings. He hasn’t pitched in a week and at this point in the Mets comeback they need 6 outs and Wagner is the best pitcher in the pen. If you want to be known as one of the best that ever played, a situation like yesterday is where you make your reputation. Yesterday’s game would have gone down not only as the best game of the year for the Mets but also it would have been an all timer.  It would have been a game you would watch on a snowy winter night just to relive the thrill of the game and as the game that stamped the season. But as it stands now this game could go down as the biggest kick in the nuts we have gotten in a long time.

I don’t know what kind of relationship Willie has with Omar Minaya. I don’t think they are very close probably one that is more cordial as a supervisor and subordinate. I bring this up as I’m intrigued into how much pull Willie has over personnel moves because the bullpen is a mess and has been for most of the second half of the season.  There are three guys in Aaron Sele, Scott Schoenwiess, and Guillermo Mota who have pitched like shit for most of the season. At some point as the manager don’t you ask for a meeting with your GM and voice your displeasure with him in his inability to bring in pitchers to replace these three. Mike Pelfrey has shown that for an inning or two he can be very effective.  Instead of allowing Sele to languish in the pen as the long/middle man why not let Phil Humber take that spot so between appearances he could work with The Jacket and Guy Conti. What makes the pen set up a head scratcher, is Pelfrey and Humber are ready to be recalled to take over those roles and hopefully, Willie Collazo and Carlos Muniz join them and it may be too late.

The big picture with this team is for the last three month the Mets are under .500, hardly championship caliber, here’s the breakdown:

June 12-15

July 13-14

August 14-13

If that’s not bad enough here is breakdown of wins and losses against teams either in first place or in contention for a playoff spot in the NL:

Phillies      6-9

Braves       4-8

Cubs          5-2

D’Backs     4-3

Padres        2-4

Dodgers     5-5

That gives the Mets a woeful 26-31 record against the cream of the crap errr……… crop of the NL.

So while most fans vilify Willie for mishandling the pitching staff and for not so scintillating strategic moves maybe Omar Minaya and most importantly the players need to have some fire put under their seat too.

I can’t exactly explain what “it” is but  like Justice Potter Stewart when asked about ruling on what was obscene or pornographic I know “it” when I see “it” and the Mets I’m sorry to say do not have ‘it”.

Most times ‘it” is part confidence, part swagger, part ability to overcome any kind of set back, part showing who is dominant and taking out those who stand in the way of triumph and the 2007 Mets team has lost the “it” that the 2006 team had.

Can they get  “it” back? Yes, but it will take some doing. With Petey ready to get back in the fold he just oozes “it”. So does Jose Ryes when he figures out that his game his hitting the ball on the ground and staying awake on the base paths and in the field. Endy Chavez has “it” but his “it” is most effective in small doses. Carlos Delgado has lost his “it” and from watching him last few games in Philly, I don’t think it’s coming back this year. We saw glimpses of “it” as he went from wallowing in the low 200’s in batting average to get up to .250 and we really had our hopes up in July when he had an OPS for the month of .939 but he could not sustain that pace in August. He lost “it” and his OPS for August was down over 200 points.  David Wright has “it” but may need to have a mega dose of “it” to carry this team and be the first Mets player ever to win an MVP. Carlos Beltran had world record “it” when he was with the Astros that made him a ton of money. We saw glimpses of major ‘it” from him last year but this year not so much. If the two Carlos’, Reyes and Wright ever get their “it” all together then guys like me wouldn’t have anything to bitch and moan about.

Last year the pitching staff especially the bullpen was full of “it” with El Duque, Tom Glavine and especially Oliver Perez and John Maine stepping up in the post season full of ‘it”.  The  bullpen was an “it” factory all season until Dauner Sanchez got a craving for Dominican food at 4AM in South Beach and now his career might never be the same.  This year only El Duque has “it” big time “it” maybe even Hall of Fame “it” hopefully he has “it” this afternoon so the Mets can avoid embarrassment of a four game sweep.

THIS C. B. WON’T LET THESE TRUCKERS ROLL

Believe me I wanted to come here today and rant about what an asshole C.B. Buckner is and how Joe West is a red neck dick, but the problem is they look like the got the call right on Marlon Anderson’ take out of Tadihito Iguchi. While Anderson’ foot did touch the bag even though  Country Douchebag said it didn’t, Anderson did throw his arms into Iguchi to interfere with Iguchi making a play at first base. In no way am I pissed at Anderson in fact he should be applauded for having the stones to make that play.

I did hear a rumor that Buckner has Tim Donaghy on his speed dial list.

Thank God I didn’t see last night’s game live. I spent the night at Key Span Park (over 9,000 fans packed Coney Island last night) to see the Cyclones sweep the Hudson Valley Renegades in a double header. But thanks to my son and his new phone, we kept track of this game on Gameday. So much for modern technology. A few issues with this game so let’s take them one by one shall we:

·         Some day they will a manager who will possess a pair of balls big enough to tell his closer he couldn’t  give two shits about saves and save situations. Willie Randolph is not that manager.  I want to kill Willie for lifting Heilman after 1/3 IP with Marlon Anderson as a pinch hitter with 2 out but in that band box of a ballpark Anderson is Dave Kingman and could pop one out. My problem is with the bottom of the 9th. Two of the three hitters due up for the Phillies, Jimmy Rollins and the very dangerous Chase Utley, can end the game with one pitch. In that spot I want the best pitcher I have left in the pen and that’s Dead Arm Wagner. If I’m going down, I’m going down with my best. If Willie’ excuse is it’s not a save situation I call out a big loud BULLSHIT on that. So of course Willie goes with just about the last option available and that’s Guierllmo Mota.  Amazingly, the Mets got a 1-2-3 inning out of Mota. At that time Willie should have blessed himself and said Thank you Jesus and gotten Dead Arm ready to face Ryan Howard in the 10th. The matchup has everything you want, lefty vs. lefty, your best against their best , seems easy to me right? Not to Willie, he stays with the human land mine Mota and well you know the rest.  As good as I thought Randolph operated as a manager last year, this year he has been poor.

·         When I watched Mets FastFoward, it seemed to me on Delgado’s HR ¾ of the fans were Mets fans as it sounded like Shea when the ball sailed over the RF fence.

·         Bye-bye Brian Lawrence. Hello Endy Chavez . Word is Mike Pelfrey will get the start on Saturday that was to be Lawrence’s and then that would but the next go around in the rotation a spot for Petey. That would move Pelfrey to the pen, a move that should have been made a month ago and if any one is awake in the Mets front office they would add Willie Collazo,  Carlos Muniz and Phil Humber to the staff as well. Let Mota play catch with Tom Nieto until the end of September then de-activate him.

·         I don’t care how far he hit that HR; Delgado still looks like shit at the plate.

·         I can’t take Jose Reyes seriously as an MVP candidate until he stops hitting the ball in the air and taking plays off in the field.

·         J.D Durbin and Adam Eaton shut down the Mets offense so if the Mets do get to the post season just think about what Brandon Webb and Jake Peavy will do to them.

·         Sorry if I sound bummed out but until the Mets show they can beat the Phillies and the Braves I can’t take Mets seriously going deep in the  post season

ITEM: PETEY RIGHT ON COURSE

Even though Petey would love his next start to be in a big league ball park, it looks like he will make one more rehab start in the bushes before regaining his spot in the Mets rotation.  I understand what Omar  is doing as even the awful performance last night, there is no panic that the Phillies or Braves will catch the Mets, so why not let Petey work on command of breaking ball to see if he can get outs with guile and smarts when he can’t fire up his fastball. Which is what he told St. Lonesome mgr. Frank Cacciatore last night when Cacciatore wanted Petey to walk a batter to set up a double play and Petey told him No he was here to see if he can still get out of jams, and he did with a strike out and a fly out. I know winning the FSL is a big deal to Cacciatore and his team but the big organizational picture is winning the World Series so Petey flexed his future Hall of Fame muscle.

ITEM: WHO STARTS SATURDAY?

I don’t care as long as it’s not Brain Lawrence. I ‘ve seen enough of him. Lawrence is a junk baller who has to get the ball down to be effective as his fastball lacks both velocity and movement which means it’s a batting practice fastball. He falls behind batters and then has to come with that lollipop fastball and it’s a disaster. If the Mets won’t give the start to Mike Pelfrey or Phil Humber or even Petey, then give it to Aaron Sele anyone up Lawrence. Enough already!

ITEM: RENFORCMENTS ARE ON THE WAY

Adam Rubin has a list of names of who will be up come Saturday the first of September. You don’t need to bring up 10 or more guys but one name on Rubin’s list is Willie Collazo, who should have been up here over a month ago.
