This is why the Mets have frustrated the fan base this season. Last night they played like the best team in baseball. Glavine was vintage Glavine, pounding the strike zone down low, Moises Alou comes thru with a big HR, third string catcher Mike DeFelice comes up big with 3 RBI and the play of the season by the best double play combo in baseball in the 5th inning when Jose Reyes made a diving stop and flipped the ball to Luis Castillo from his glove to turn the twin killing of the year all added up to a win that took away a lot of the stink of Thursday night.
You think Glavine likes to see the Nats (nee Expos) and RFK Stadium? Last night was Glavine’s 33rd win against the hybrid franchise and he is 4-1 @ RFK
Damion Easley look very comfortable at 1st base. And to think that Julio Franco was the first option for a righty bat over Easley. Easley has done more than hold his own with .272/.349/.461 and 10 HR plus the guy can play anywhere on the field. Very underrated.

Do we Castro’s placement on the DL as another example of DL mismanagement (LoDuca, Beltran, etc.), or Ramon saying “No Mas”?
Once again here is this organization with no back up in this position. It’s sad that they need to recall guys past their prime. Now granted some of the names that I listed below are not great, but mediocre, but better then Alomar Jr or DiFeliece. Wouldn’t it be nice to recall a young catcher like Brian McCann or Jarrod Saltalamacchia,Miguel Montero,Russell Martin,Victor Martinez,Jesus Flores( in which they left unprotected),Josh Bard,Ronny Paulino,Yorvit Torrealba,Joe Mauer. What about the Mets trading 2 catchers in their system that they did not let develop properly and used them as 1st baseman. They are Mike Jacobs ( FLA) Justin Huber ( Royals). Ok they got Delgado for Jacobs.
Huber was traded to Kansas City Royals in exchange for IF Jose Bautista on July 30, 2004. Bautista never played for the Mets. Thanks Jim Duquette for trading away a prospect on the same day he traded away Kazmir. Hope the O’s never have a good year in their history as long as you are there!!!
Ok I stand correct on the Bautista / Huber deal. Of course he never played for the Mets he was sent to the O’s for Kris and Anna Benson. Of course Anna looked good and Kris did not pitch that bad for us. ( Acquired RHP Kris Benson and IF Jeff Keppinger from Pittsburgh in exchange for 3B Ty Wigginton, IF Jose Bautista and RHP Matt Peterson.)Now looking back at this we basically traded for John Maine and Ruben Gotay from what the Mets received from the O’s. Still why would you trade a minor league young catcher, I wouldn’t.
SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION ON THAT DEAL!!!
THANKS AGAIN JIM DUQUETTE YOU GAVE US JOHN MAINE: SUCKER!!!! THEN AGAIN U GOT ANNA BENSON!!!
Rob, There is no team in baseball that could lose it’s top two catchers and replace them at the minor league level. I have no problem with DiFelice and Alomar filling in until LoDuca and or Castro get back. Even brining in a guy like Fasano would be fine. The thing you need from your catcher is his abilty to handle pitchers and to play solid defense. If he hits that gravy.
You could argue that Omar did not have as good a trading season as last year but what about adding El Duque, John Maine, and Oliver Perez for Kris Benson, Jorge Julio and X Nady? How about adding Easley, Gotay, Marlon Anderson and last but not least Luis Castillo for a couple of minor leaguers?
Rob only you could have me go from ranting on how bad the team has under achived to defending the front office. LOL
Overall the Mets always fail to draft a catcher that can do well.
The Braves had McCann ( selected by the Braves in the 2nd Round of the 2002 June free agent baseball draft). and Jarrod Saltalamacchia ( first round of the June 2003 amateur draft by the Braves.) right behind him on the farm. The Mets have no catchers in their system that will ever make it to the majors with the exception of Francisco Pena who is only 17 years old( Born: 10/12/1989)Height: 6′ 2″
Weight: 230
Bats: R
Throws: R I am sure if he does he is another 3-5 yrs away. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Francisco%20Pena&pos=C&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=506747

I guess I expect it all the time. I am fan and I cannot stand poor performance or mediocre deals for the sake of trading. I will give Omar some credit for things he did in the past, but its what has he done lately to help improve this bullpen and team. I rather see Youth play with the Veterans and win!!!!
Yesterday on WFAN Minaya said that if there is a position in all of baseball where there is a lack of talent depth, it’s catcher. That doesn’t just come from Omar it’s know throughout baseball.
I can see though that Minaya will make a strong run at trading for Victor Martinez in the off season. He may not get him as the price could be porhibitive.

Ok with that thought Omar should have had scouts find a college catcher that is excelling and draft that person 1st. I realize that pitching is important, without a catcher who does he throw the ball to. The Mets had 2 picks in the fist 64 picks of this years draft. In their 2 picks ofcourse they selected pitchers. These guys will probably get hurt, get Tommy John surgery and never play for them. 4 catchers were picked after their picks. Now, you can say these guys may never make the majors, but change the paragidm and select a catcher first to have a different thought process. Look David Wright and Jose Reyes didnot have that awesome years in the minors they did OK and who thought they would be allstars today.
Who would you rather have on your bench going into the stretch and reaching the playoffs:
Miguel Cairo or Anderson Hernandez.
Well, once again Omar goes with someone that cannot hit and is weak.
This is where Cairo landed. Good for the Cards, I am sure he will help them!!!
Miguel Cairo-1B- Cardinals Aug. 19 - 8:50 pm et
Cardinals signed infielder Miguel Cairo to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Memphis.
The only surprise here is that GM Walt Jocketty didn’t go ahead and give him a two- or three-year deal. Cairo, who played for the Cardinals from 2001-03, should be up in September to serve as a utility infielder.
