IGB: METS-CARDS 9-27-07 BOT 4

Wright walks with 1 out.

I had to move my headquarters as my family would rather watch Survivor than the Mets. Why? I don’t know don’t they know they are living with a Survivor?

This game is painful to watch. I can’t even lay on the couch and enjoy it. Who said baseball is a leisurely ? This game is distrubing.

Beltran whiffs on a change up and Alou grounds out  up come the Birds

Nice catch by Alou spread out in LF

IN 9-GAME BLOG 9-27-07 METS-CARDS

3-0 Cards 1 out top of the 3rd. Mets look tighter than crabs ass so far. Petey has a pretty good breaking ball but his fastball is just very flat.

Fan in the strands has a t-shirt that says “MAKE PLAYS NOT EXCUSES” Excellent motto

Gary Cohen mentioned that Shea is “as quiet as a tomb” that is to be expected as we watch this self destruction. The feeling on being a Mets fan is eerie.

Pat Burrell hits a two run homer it’s 6-0 Phillies Talk about getting late early!

TEARS ON MY PILLOW PAIN IN MY HEART OVER YOU

It’s ridiculous. How the hell is this happening? Every game the same shit, the Mets score runs, the starting pitcher can’t get past the 5th inning, the bullpen implodes not just one game but the last eleven games. It’s numbing. Right now the best reliever the Mets have is Scott Schoeneweis who Willie Randolph went to recently as a last resort. Schoenweiss was ineffective early in the year but has lately been THE MAN in the pen. No one else has stepped up.

Phil Humber did as well as could be expected not because he’s a rookie making his first ML start but because the kid was left to rot in the bullpen all month and then is called upon to breathe life into a morbid team.

My WTF? Willie Moment of the Night (I need a sponsor for this segment) is if your going to use El Duque out of the pen why not bring him in the 5th inning? I know that bringing in Duque with men on base just back from injury is a gamble but I have to ask myself Joe Smith or El Duque? El Duque wins that argument each time. Listen it really doesn’t matter anymore as it now has gone beyond who Willie brings in the bullpen as this bullpen collapse is now historic. The kind that books are written about. I can just see myself in 30 years from now with my grandchildren saying “Grampa, tells us about the great Mets collapse of ‘07″

As fans we’re stunned, dazed and befuddled but what about the players? How much confidence do th e position players have in this pitching staff? How frayed are the nerves of this team? If someone in that clubhouse says the wrong thing could it spark a full scale riot? I’m trying to put myself there wondering how I could a confident that my teammates will step up and not shit all over my hard work. The offense is putting runs that are unprecedented for a Mets team and still can’t win games.

I’m watching Randolph’s press conference as I write this (I have to get up at 5:30 AM to go to work but there is no way I’ll be able to sleep so hopefully by posting here it will exhaust me enough so I can get to sleep) and it’s the same thing after each of the last awful games. “We’re still ahead” “We have to battle” “We have to be mentally tough” One reporter asked him how do you stay positive when you blow four, five and six runs leads on a daily basis, and Willie just gave a nervous laugh and the stock mentally tough quote. I think Willie realizes that his dazzle them with bullshit way has hit a wall. This has not been a mentally or physically tough team for three-quarters of the season. They have not displayed a killer instinct to put away teams when they has the chance. I don’t care how hard or gutsy the Nationals seem to be playing, they have inferior talent and it’s a fucking embarrassment to lose to them any place but especially at home.

I’m sorry that I’m rambling and babbling but I’m at a loss for words about what we’re seeing with the Mets, it seems I write the same thing everyday for the past week and a half. I’m hitting the wall and I have to get some sleep even though I have a feeling I’ll just be staring a the ceiling all night.

YOU MEN EAT YOUR DINNER EAT YOUR PORK AND BEANS I EAT MORE CHICKEN THAN ANY MAN EVER SEEN YEAH YEAH I’M A BACK DOOR MAN

If you have read this site for awhile you know my philosophy for winning baseball is pitching and defense. Hitting ,while exciting to watch does not thrill me like watching a pitcher hit corners, change speeds and make hitters look foolish. A top flight pitcher is as rare as Britney Spears wearing her Hanes but hitters you can find in abundance. With that said excuse me for not being piss my pants giddy over last night’s comeback loss. I’m not at all excited with this Mets team down the stretch. I know I should be on the edge of my Lazy-Boy as they try to close the deal on the NL East but the way the pitching staff has just been so ineffective has put a damper on my enthusiasm.

Last night was just awful but with a little ray of sunshine. My personnel punching bag Titan Tom Glavine picked a bad time to shit the bed. Titan Tommy has bee n very good the last five starts but last night with a worn out bullpen and a rookie making his first ML start today in Philip Humber, Glavine needed to add to his Hall of Fame dossier and go a strong 7. Instead he threw some very flat and very hittable pitches that instead of hitting the corners were nice and juicy middle in batting practice fastballs that Austin Kerns, Tony Batista and Justin Maxwell launched out of Shea. Great, thanks for nothing Tommy.

Freddy Skill Sets called for a sit down with Omar and Willie yesterday mostly due to his dumb ass son Jeffey spouting off to reporters that he is upset with Omar, Willie and the players for their awful play of late. There isn’t bigger critic of Jeffey Skill Sets that myself but what he said is on the mark. The team has played just a smidge better that mediocre the last three months of the season and should not be in a knock down drag out battle with teams like the Nats and the Fish day in and day out. But Freddy felt he had to make an appearance and smooth a few of the jagged edges. I do think that Willie was told to start using the personnel that’s on hand and stop using Mota and Sosa like they had rubber arms. All of a sudden Philip Humber gets a start and last night Carlos Muniz gets the call (more on this in a second) I have no proof or inside knowledge but both moves to me have the Omar Minaya stamp on them if you ask me. Humber has been here all month and all he has done was get two walk on roles and spit a lot of sunflower seeds in the bullpen. Muniz as well, he comes in a game that was on the line and that’s Willie’ thinking? HA HA. By the way ,as happy as I was to see Muniz get a shot and get through his first big league inning with flying colors, why would you bring him back for a second inning? The kid was a closer all season in Bingo pitching one inning why not be happy with that inning and move on? The kid was charged with two runs due to the fact that Jose Reyes fucked up again in the field not covering second base on a ball hit to Carlos Delgado. I wish I knew what was up with Reyes but I do know that blaming it on Rickey Henderson is bullshit. So we can’t criticize Willie for mismanagment of game situations but we can rip the shit out of Rickey the first base coach because he’s close to Reyes? Only in Metsville does that make sense.

Oh and to Bill Madden, a man who when I see him on TV or hear him on the radio just makes my skin crawl as he reminds me of someone you would find Chris Hansen interviewing on Dateline (we have the transcripts here Mr. Madden isn’t your screen name Pinstriped Penis?) who thinks we are all idiots for questioning Willie Randolph’s in game screw ups, how about you take it up with Gary Cohen. Here is why I love Cohen, he’s one of us. Born and bred Mets fan and no wallflower is he. He questioned, and rightly so, the use of Muniz for two innings and why Scott Shoenewiess was (a) not in the game to face Brain Schneider and (b) if Randolph is not bringing him in why is he up and throwing? In fact Schoenewiess was up a couple of times in the seventh and this is something that pisses off relievers, up and throw, sit down, up and throw, sit down. I bet if you put Omar under the hot lights he’d agree too with Cohen. In fact just listen to Paul LoDuca when he is on WFAN when questions over strategy and handling of the pen comes up. It’s not what he says it’s how he says it that speaks volumes on how he’s not thrilled with Willie.

Please Mets fans I’m begging you PLEASE STOP DOING THE TOMAHAWK CHOP!!!! YOU LOOK LIKE TOTAL ASSHOLES DOING THAT. JUST PAINT A BIG “L” ON YOUR FOREHEAD FOR “LOSER” I thought doing the wave was awful this chopping bullshit beats that.

You have to check out the new site by Anthony DeRosa of Hot Foot fame called Mets Pulse. it’s the Kwik-e-Mart of Mets news and views. It is Apu Aproved!

HANG WITH EM’ METS FANS

I wish I had an answer to what makes Mike Pelfrey or any pitcher for that matter go from effective to shit in what seems like a spilt second. My post from last night during the Pelfrey melt down has been covered in the papers this morning with Young Pelfrey adding that even he doesn’t know why he lost concentration along with his command of his breaking ball in the fifth inning last night. It’s most frustrating watching a pitcher lose it on the mound. I don’t care if the pitcher is 12 years old or 22 years old or 32 years old, when you can’t hit that strike zone it’s a horror psychologically. I could come here today and slam Pelfrey for not getting it together but all that would do would make me look foolish. I’ve seen kids full of confidence warm up for me before a Little League game and watch their ball move up and down and say to myself “wow we got something here tonight” and then have the kid just throw flat pitches when the games starts. For a 12 year old it’s heartbreaking for a 26 year old it’s frustrating.  What makes it more puzzling is that during the third inning Mex had said on the broadcast that “he really liked how Pelfrey was throwing” and I’m sitting gat home nodding “Me too Mex”. Just the fact that he was getting excellent movement on his breaking pitches and hand good velocity with the fastball and using the fastball to get ahead and counter with the slider to get outs was encouraging and to get two outs in the fifth inning it looked like Pelfrey was putting together another solid start. Then the command vanished and the roof caved in. My God what a humbling game. It sounds so cliché I know but it is a game of failure.

So in what should have been a golden opportunity to gain on the Phillies goes by the boards again and to tell you the truth I’m tired of yelling and getting pissed off at Willie and Omar and Jeffy and the pitching staff and the ushers at Shea  really where is getting me? It’s just making the folks at Duane-Reade more money for all the ant-acids I’m buying there. Some people like chips and dip while watching a ball game I enjoy Tums and Prilozac with a Bromo Seltzer chaser as I watch the Mets.  I hear ya Mex,  HANG WITH EM!

Love the story by Bob Raissman in the Daily News today on Mex. He is what he is folks. He is not the guy who will stop and give you an autograph and he will never stop and shake your hand but you what that’s fine because he’s not a phony. I love the story he told last night. Gary Cohen had just sent out a get well soon to a security guard at Shea who had suffered a stroke and is rehabilitating. I’m sorry that I forget the gentleman’s name but Ron Darling and Mex also chimed in with their well wishes. Of course Mex could not stop there he said what a great guy this guard was because he never made Mex sign in to enter the visitor’s clubhouse. Cohen and Darling were taken aback a bit by this piece of info and said how they have to sign in each and every time even though they are well known. At this point Darling says very sarcastically “Well, You are Keith Hernandez” and Mex without missing a beat replies “And don’t you forget that” Priceless.

GOD BLESS FRANKIE FRISCH

OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH THOSE BASE ON BALLS!!!!!!!!!! You so right Fordham Flash. My God, some day Mike Pelfrey will florish in the art of pitching too bad it’s not tonight. Walks will kill you and they have tonight for Pelfrey. A walk toRyan Zimmerman and a walk to Ryan Church with 2 OUT UUUGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH and then a big fat hanging slider to Austin Kerns that is launched to CF for a 3 run HR.  Walks will kill you (I think I’ve made that point, sorry yes I am a frustrated pitching coach as well as frustrated GM )

Jesus H. Christ, two more walks by Pelfery sandwiched around two out and in comes Joe Smith for Pelfrey and there goes another fat pitch over the plate to that little fat bastard Belliard for a two run double and it’s 7-1 Nats.

I’m rambling on here as I watch this unfold because it’s better than banging my head against the wall plus I have broken three remotes already this season so it was either a trip to the ER for stiches,  another plea to DirecTV for another remote or a stream of conciousness. This is much cheaper!

WARNING: DON NOT OPERATE HEAVY MACHINERY, MOTOR VEHICLE OR WATCH METS BASEBALL WHILE USING THIS MEDICATION

Thank God the Mets won yesterday as it would have put a damper on a wonderful Sunday afternoon. I was honored to be invited by Dana Brand to his book launch party for his new book Mets Fan. Besides getting to meet Dana (Happy Birthday) who is as nice a fellow as he is talented, it was a thrill hanging with the Mets bloging glitterati.

I met Mike Steffano’s and his wife from Mike’s Mets, Mike Silva of NY Baseball Talk (by the way Mike should have his own show on either WFAN or ESPN 1050 because quite frankly he’s better than anyone on those station when it comes to interviews) and his dad who by the way has the same view of the 2007 Mets as my favorite baseball writer Tim Marchman writes about today.

The lovely and talented Kathy Foronjy of Mathematically Alive was in attendance. Kathy gave me some great flyers for the movie that I have plaster all over my Tribeca office since I am knee deep in Highlander fanatics as co-workers. Then I had the pleasure of meeting the “Joan Whitney Payson’s” four terrific young ladies who were as fun to be around in person as they are when reading their blogs. Coop from My Summer Family (check out the pics from the party on Coops site) Caryn from Mets Grrrl, SNK from You Can’t Script Baseball and Zoe from Pick Me Up Some Mets. (more party pics at Zoe’s site)

The funniest part of the day was listening to scores of the Mets-Marlins game as people at the event were checking the score on their cell phones. It reminded me of the stories of baseball fans going down to the Western Union office at the turn of the 20th century checking the teletype during games and how technology  has advanced where the news of the world is now on our telecommunication device. When it was reported to the crowd that Billy Wagner gave up a home run to Dan Uggla to tie the game at 6, I was standing with Mike, Dana, Mike Silva and his Dad. We looked so uncomfortable, like five guys getting ready to have our prostrates examined. But then the news came that David the MVP drove in the go ahead run in the top of the 11th and it was like the doctor ran out of rubber gloves. That’s how happy we were. But then in the bottom of the 11th Aaron Sele and Scott Schoeneweis were called on to close out the game. I guess Omar didn’t have time to activate Doug Sisk and Mel Rojas. Think about that, in a game that the Mets just had to win (I think I wrote that sentence about 7 times this week ) Aaron Sele and Scott  Schoeneweis are the last line of defense, two guys who earlier in the season Willie Randolph would rather forfeit a game than use them are now closing out pennant race games. Yeah baby, it’s good to be a Mets fan.

                                           MEMORANDUM

To: Willie Randolph Manger NY Mets

From: Omar Minaya, General Manager New York Mets

Subject: Wednesday’s starting pitcher

Willie,

Kranepool Society has contacted me and said we should go with Phil Humber this Wednesday against the Nats. Since all of the personnel decision the Kranepool Society has suggested to me are right on, I am directing you to read his blog each day before you make out the game day lineup or make any pitching changes. In fact if we make the post season I will adding Kranepool Society to the coaching staff as your new bench coach, since John McGraw is dead the Kranepool Society is the next best thing.

RAINY DAY SAINTS

On my way home last night from work I met a neighbor of mine on the train. He asked what plans I had for the weekend and told him “well tonight I have about three hours of aggravation on tap” he looked at like “what”? I said “The Mets. I going home to watch the Met-Marlins game and I know I will be aggravated for at least three hours” little did I know I was off by about three hours as with the length of the game plus the over two hour rain delay it was closer to six hours of angst and agita. Of course the game restarted just as Real Time with Bill Maher was coming on so I had to make a decision Salman Rushdie or Guerillmo Mota. I chose Mota. I’ll see Rushdie on HBO 376. My highlights of the game:

We may look back at the bottom of the third inning as a turning point that sparks the hold on to the NL East pennant. It was Petey getting out of the bases loaded jam. The tape of that inning should be shown to every little leaguer, high schooler, college player anyone who wants to know what pitching is all about. It takes smarts, guile and cajones which Petey has in abundance.

After being down 3-0 early, the Mets come back in the top of the third and tie the game at three. So now it’s up to Petey to get three quick outs and let the offense inflict more damage on the human time bomb Scott Olsen. After getting Hermida to ground out, Cabrera doubles, Willingham walks and Jacobs singles, the bags are juiced and only one out. This is where Petey turns int o Popeye and eats his spinach as says “I’s can stands so much I’s can’t stands no more” and turns into a Hall of Fame pitcher.

He falls behind Cody Ross 2-0 and the next pitch is fouled off a pitch which looked like a slider just misses for a ball. 2 balls 1 strike. Petey just misses with a pitch at the knees and its 3-1 count. Ross has to be looking dead red, he gets it and fouls it back. Full count bases loaded one out. What a spot for a hitter.  This next pitch is huge. I’m on the edge of the couch in anticipation. Ross could break the game open here with a hit and that hit could just about sink a team whose psyche has been questioned by fans and media. The manager is under fire. The player’s heart and desire questioned for the first time in the Omar/Willie era.  Peteys pitch, A FUCKING GEM! Breaking ball on the outside corner of the plate knee high.  Home plate ump Adam Dowdy rips that right arm SSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTRRRRRRRRIIIIKKKKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Tell me again how Petey is not worth every penny they pay him. CAJONES BABY! CAJONES!

If Carlos Beltran can stand up this morning he has to play today. I hate to question how hurt a guy is but if he can walk he’s got to play.

Welcome back Carlos Delgado. If you don’t think Delgado means that much to this team just look at David Wright after the third out as he hugged Delgado like a long lost relative.

I’ve killed these guys all through the melt down but Guillermo Mota and Scott Schoeneweiss stepped up last night but it can’t be a one night stand we needs this down the stretch every night.

This notion that Rickey Henderson is a bad influence on Jose Reyes and has caused his second half slump is the biggest bunch of bullshit I heard in a long time. Yeah, Rickey is telling Jose, just go for stolen bases don’t worry about winning and losing. Are you kidding me? I hope no one believes this garbage. The media jokes about Henderson not knowing teammates names and the card playing but if you think Henderson doesn’t know about baseball and is an asset then you’re the chump. Find his baseball card read it and be educated.

Click here to listen to Mike Silva’s NY Baseball Talk where his guests are Kathy Foronjy and Joe Coburn the people behind the documentary on Mets fans Mathematically Alive. I hope a lot of guys can come out a see this film as Kathy and Joe have put in a ton of hard work months project.

THAT’S ME IN THE CORNER, THAT’S ME IN THE SPOTLIGHT LOSING MY RELIGION

Consider this
The hint of the century
Consider this
The slip that brought me
To my knees failed
What if all these fantasies
Come flailing around
Now I’ve said too much
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
That was just a dream

Going after Willie Randolph after last nights stunning loss to a Florida team that everyone in the media told us was mailing it in for the season, is like shooting fish in a barrel. To all you mainstream media types who feel that Mets fans are a bunch of yahoo’s for criticizing Willie Randolph’s managerial moves, how can you not just go ape shit over how he handled the bullpen last night? That was a shocking display of mismanagement and again I really hate bashing Randolph and I seriously take no joy in doing it but this team is ready to make the biggest choke job in baseball as Willie Randolph is mismanaging his bullpen in the same way Gene Much screwed up his starting pitching in the Phillies crash and burn in 1964.

Before the game Randolph knew that there was a strong possibility that Billy Wagner would not be available due to back spasms. If you ever had back spasm, as I have, you know you can barely walk never mind pitch a baseball. To Wagner’s credit he tried to throw but just couldn’t do it. Again, knowing the pain of back spasms, I can’t see how Wagner could ever bend his back to follow through. Whatever, knowing what Willie knew before the game he had to have a Plan B in mind right?  You would think that he would meet with Professor Rick-by the way, how much voice does Peterson have when it comes to personnel moves?  Does Willie listen to him or does he just brush him off?-and make a game plan with Wagner and without.   How do you remove a rested Pedro Feliciano for an over worked Jorge Sosa? For a guy who preaches cool and clam his handling of the bullpen at crunch time last night was pure panic. I see, you see it, his players see it and I ‘m sure Omar Minaya not only sees it but will address it with Willie. Omar needs to step in and call an emergency meeting with Randolph and the coaches to figure out how they can get this team back on track and to figure out the bullpen situation.

Do you blame Lastings Milledge for freaking out last night? If you got hit as many times as he has this season and no one stepping up to take your back you’d flip too. Again at what point does Willie stick up for his players? Lo Duca, Anderson and now Milledge have gotten tossed from games over bad calls by umpires. Milledge by the way was still stewing from being called out in the first inning at first base when he was clearly safe. Yes we know Willie is not that way well there comes a time when you have to stick up for your players or you’ll lose them and Willie is coming close to losing his grip here.

TROUBLE IN PARADISE

Seems as per Jon Heyman, that the Skill Sets are as infuriated with Willie Randolphs moves as the fans are. Jeffy Skill Sets, now that the Brooklyn Cyclones have closed up Coney Island for the season, is hot on the big club’s tail. Jeffy, who should be sent off to scout players in Greenland, found a notebook to put his quotes in and it seems he’s pissed off at everyone:

“I’m disappointed with the way the team is performing overall, and that’s everyone, top to bottom,” Mets COO Jeff Wilpon told SI.com before Wednesday’s much-needed win expanded New York’s NL East lead over Philadelphia to 2½ games. “I’m disappointed in Omar, Willie, the players … that’s everyone. We shouldn’t be in this position. But we are. We’ve got to fight our way out and pull this out.”

WHEW! Thank God the bloggers are safe!

Check out the story but there is nothing that has not been discussed here or other blogs or message boards.
