C’mon Steve, this Boston stuff has become unbearable. That town is no longer the suffering losers fighting against the evil highlander empire and the demons and all that.. Consider the huge Red Sox payroll and total domination in the World Series, the Patriots heading for yet another Super Bowl championship, and now the Celts possibly poised to raise a 17th banner in Boston Garden?
I fully expect the free-spending Sox to go after A-Rod to fill Lugo’s position at shortstop, get him for say, $25 million a year for 7 years, promising him the likelihood of a series of championships, while he chases the career home run record at Fenway and slaps 70 doubles a year off the Monster.
Look at their line-up…a hit parade, and those starting pitchers…Beckett, Schilling, Dice K, etc. — guys with the best postseason stats in the world. Their number three, the one they paid $52 million to just to get negotiation rights, is the guy who went out and won the World Baseball Classic final for Japan. These are not normal players, they are institutions.
As a Mets fan I have always rooted for the Sox to beat the Yanks, but this is now a team and a city that I cannot support any more. I wish Cleveland could have finished what they started, them beating the Rockies and finally winning a championship after 59 years would have been uplifting. But watching the Red Sox fans celebrate is leaving me cold…especially in the light of the uncanny Patriots’ performance (again) this year, and new potential of the Celtics.
I have been a Celtics fan since childhood when the C’s were a staple on the NBA Game of the Week on ABC (anyone remember Chris Schenkel and Jack Tyman doing the games. How Schenkel doing PBA Bowling every Saturday? I miss the Firestone Open from Akron) I even started a Henry Finkel Fan Club.
