Now that Tom McCarthy has bolted down the Jersey Turnpike, the Mets are looking for a new radio voice. McCarthy never made a big impression on me but it is kind of hard to be a Mets broadcaster with Howie Rose and Gary Cohen in the fold as both grew up here and were (and still) not only die hard Mets fans but walking encyclopedia of Mets information.
So where do the Mets turn for a partner for Rose? In a perfect Mets world and ex player like Straw, Maz or Kid Carter would be the answer but I don’t think any of those three would make the commitment to 162 game schedule. By all rights Ed (Grey Goose) Coleman should get the job (even though I’m not a big fan of his bland style) just due to seniority. The best candidate would be Ron Darling then you could use Maz as the back up to Mex when he takes his frequent hiatus during the season. A dark horse would be Kenny Albert, a solid play by player and a “NY guy” or even Bob Wischuisen a guy who is both energetic and a solid play by player. Anyone have Steve Zabriskie’ number? I’m kidding.

Why would Darling want to switch to radio when he has a great gig on SNY and has a long term deal? Plus you would then be breaking up a great booth with Cohen, Hernandez and Darling.
