I’ve just finished watching the New England Patriots beat the NY Giants to go 16-0 and do it the hard way as they were down 12 points in the 3rd quarter to come back and score 22 unanswered points and as a lifelong Mets fans I can not comprehend rooting for a team like this.
As I watched the game all I thought was the Giants had the Pats number and no way they are coming back because no team is that good. My Mets fan mentality is so strong that I see all situations that are tough as lost causes. A 45 minute delay at the George Washington Bridge? Oh boy tell Aunt Helen she won’t be seeing me in Fort Lee today. Wow look at that line at the Dunkin Dounts I’ll never get to work on time if I wait here for coffee, I’ll just settle for the swill they serve at the coffee cart on the corner. SUDUKO? Are you fucking kidding ! Now Tom Brady he’d drive above the traffic, grab a Dunkin Dounts coffee and finish the SUDUKO puzzle at a traffic light while impregnating a super model that’s why I love him like no straight man can love another straight man.
But the bigger question and the question I’ve been reflecting on since the game ended is who is our Tom Brady? Is it D-Wright? As great as Wright is he’s no Tom Brady and that may not be fair to Wright as no one in sports is Tom Brady, hell no one in the world is like Tom Brady . Then I thought, who is our Randy Moss? Jose Reyes? Maybe, but he has to prove more in a big spot to be close. Who is our Junior Seau? Carlos Delgado? Not even close. Mike Vrabel? No one, well maybe Billy Wagner but that’s a stretch as well.
Every week I watch the Patriots and Bill Belichick with awe as they find a way to win game after game, and week after week I wish Willie Randolph could be more Bill Belichick than Art Howe.
Think about what it must be like to be a Patriots fan? I can’t imagine as I have to much Mets in me. Can you imagine if the Mets ever had a team like the Pats? Sure the ‘86 Mets were kind of like them with the swagger and talent and never say die attitude and when you think about it Davey Johnson is a lot like Bill Belichick but that team flamed out fast and never went on a run like the Patriots have had in the Belichick era.
How great it has to be to root for a team that shows up for each game with a big “BLOW ME” greeting to the opposition and no matter how hard they try they can’t beat them. The Patriots opponents not only want to beat them on the scoreboard but they want put their players out of the game. As hard as they try they can’t do it and Brady, Moss, Varbel, Bruschi, Harrison, and Seau just look them in the eye and say BITE ME YOU FUCKERS and that goes double to the 1972 Miami Dolphins who are a bunch of tired old pricks who should be more gracious.
Maybe it’s better the Mets are not like the Patriots maybe I’m better off with my Mets fan mentality that hope for the best expect the worst way of looking at things because if it were reversed I’m pretty sure I’d be more unbearable than I am now and that would be awful.

Very well thought out. Our fatalist mentality makes us Mets fans (or is it the other way)? We just can’t stand prosperity, we don’t know what to do with it. If things go too well, we complain that all this means is something is bound to go wrong. I don’t know about you, but I approach life like that! Damn Mets, if it weren’t for them, I’d have a better disposition.
But we love them anyway. They give us character.
Happy New Year!
I just can’t imagine having a guy like Belichick running the Mets. You may not like the way he does business but he coudn’t give a rat’s ass how YOU see him. He has 53 guys listening to him and following his direction which to me is astounding.
Same with Brady imagine a Mets pitcher say Petey in his prime, Seaver, Gooden, are about the only ones who come to mind that has the confidence and poise of this guy. I’m in awe!
The Giants reminded me of the Mets. They had the game (season) in hand and then at the end, choked.
