Last night on SPORTSTALKNY Mark Rosenman moderated a great round table discussion of steroid use by pro and amateur athletes. Most of the focus was on teenagers using PED’s . Don Hooton was a call in guest and you can’t help but hear the hurt in this man voice over his son taking his life due to steroid use. We also touched on the NHL and the Winter Classic (this is why I LOVE being part of this show, we talk hockey and as long time readers here know I feel hockey coverage in this town is a disgrace due the ignorance of most sports writers and hosts so it’s a revelation to talk hockey with Mark) and my obsession with the NHL on VERSUS (hint: I HATE IT) So go to the archive page at SPORTSTALKNY and listen in. If you are looking for an alternative from sports talkies who hate the games they talk about and want to hear people who love sports and have a passion for their teams then tune in to the SPORTSTALKNY web cast. Don’t forget we are looking for your Shea and Highlander Stadium remembrances from games or any event you attended at these two ball parks. Send us a video via e mail at SPORTSTALK1@aol.com  for the February 13 show.

Steve, I hate to be the bad guy here but that’s just me. I can’t imagine the heartbreak Don Hooten must feel over his son taking his life over PED’s. I have 2 young daughters myself and if I lost one of them, the rest of my life would only be an empty shell…but…I’m going to pull what I now call the “Responsibility Card”. This is when people do stupid things and blame their actions on others. To me, this is like blaming heavy metal bands when their son listens to them and then kills themselves. It’s like blaming McDonalds for making you gain 100 lbs because their food is so addicting. I do not condone PED’s to anyone and the fact that athletes use them to cheat disgusts me but this kid must have had other problems going on or maybe mental problems above and beyond the PED’s. I know pro athletes are role models but at some point we, as individuals, have to figure out right from wrong and make our own decisions and live with them despite outside influences.
I might be off base here but it’s how I feel. If I was Don, I wouldn’t focus my angst on athlete’s being bad role models. I would go around to schools and be a speaker telling these kids that if you have problems, if you feel you want to take your life, if you feel you can’t go on, to please talk to your parents, talk to your friends, talk to guidance counselers and let them help you. At that young age, there should be nothing bad enough to want to take your own life. Remind them that people love them. That would be my message.
Excellent comments Frank. I agree with what your saying that people need to look in the mirror to find the person responsible for their short comings.
I was taken aback really by Mr. Hooton’s statements that he had no idea about steroid use by athletes and other teens until his son took his life. I knew of guys taking steroids (Dianabol) in the mid 70′s. In fact there was a doctor in Bensonhurst who would shoot you up for 10 bucks but as a teen back then we knew that it caused liver and kidney damage and for your testicles to shrink. I guess that’s the difference growing up in NYC and growing up in Plano TX.
The other thing I got from the interview is that Mr. Hooton fights with thinking that pushing his son in baseball like he did lead to this. That is a huge burden to carry and I hope he can come to grips with. Not knowing him personally I don’t know if that led to his son taking PED’s or not so I won’t pass judgement.
I feel the same way you do Frank that making athletes role models is a mistake. If Mommy and Daddy are not the child’s role model then there is big problem in that home.
