MARQUIS de FLUSHING?

Maybe this is the beginning of more moves this off season as the Cubs have signed John Lieber to a nowadays bargain basement deal of $3.5 mil/1 yr. The deal frees the Cubs to deal either RHP and Staten Island native Jason Marquis or closer Ryan Dempster.

Dempster is relatively cheap with one year left on his contract at $5.5 mil but Marquis is owed over $16 mil over the next two seasons so he looks like he will be packing his bags soon. So how about those bags coming to NYC?

Marquis would make a fine # 5 pitcher in the Mets rotation and I’m sure if the Mets pick up that contract they could get him for next to nothing (no way they give up Endy Chavez or even Ruben Gotay like I’ve read else where)

Say the Mets get Marquis and not Santana then the staff could look like this:

Petey

Maine

Perez

Marquis

Humber

El Duque

Pelfrey

Feliciano

Sosa

Schoenwiess

Heilman

Wagner

Not bad. You have three guys in Duque, Pelfery and Sosa who can jump in a take a start when ever needed plus there looks to be quality depth in the pen

Now say Santana comes our way. Then the staff could look like this:

Santana

Petey

Maine

Perez

Marquis

El Duque

Sosa

Wise

Schoenwies

Felicaino

Heilman

Wagner

A strong starting five and still depth in the pen. This staff is one to go to battle with. Either way if Omar can add Marquis for the back end of the pen for just a token of his appreciation it may be a move to make.

Marquis is no more than an avg pitcher- I would rather go with Pelfry/Humber-less money-same stats

I know it’s easy for us because it’s not our money but I honestly don’t believe it is viable to have a #5 pitcher averaging $8 million a year especially one that in my opinion is sub-average. In his best year, his ERA was still close to 4. I’m gonna let you guys in on a little secret: Any pitcher that the Braves had and let go, leave him alone! (maybe not as much now that Mazzone is gone).

Anyway, that starting rotation and pen are suspect to me and it’s going to take some above average seasons from most of this crew to make this a playoff team.

I agree with the other posts, of what i saw last year of marquis he was awful…the mets rocked him…rather give that spot to pelfrey/humber/mulvey…

I agree that Marquis is just about league average but to get him I’m sure if you spilt the difference with the Cubs on salary he would be cost effective seeing how the pitching market is sparse.

If the Cubs absorb half his salary then they are going to want something half decent in return. If you’re talking about a mid range AA prospect fine but to be honest, i like Gotay and I think we need him off the bench. On the same token, if Humber and Pelfry fail in the #5 spot, then we are in trouble. Actually, I would rather have gotten Lieber for 3.5 mil for 1 year to give the young guns 1 more year of seasoning in the minors.

they are both mediocre. Let Heilman try and start or just let the prospect pitch and stop micro managing their pitch count. If other teams want them, what does that tell you, they know they will become good MLB pitchers.
