I try to stay away from most Johan Santana articles because it’s all speculation, but this information is actually important. While all these writers were speculating on who is interested, what it would take, and how close a deal is, they negated the fact that the Twins GM still wanted to try and re-sign his Ace.

As of today the offer that was on the table from the Twins was 4 years 80 million.. But word out of the Twins organization is that the Twins offered Santana a 5 year 100 million dollar deal, and he rejected it. Combine that with the 12 million he’ll make this year and that’s a 6 year $112 million. More then the 5 year $73 million Oswalt signed for, more then the 5 year $91 million Zambrano signed for, and a lot more then the 5 year $63 million Peavy signed for.

Santana has been quoted on saying that he doesn’t like the direction that this club is going, and he has stated he wants to pitch on the east coast.. So that is a possible reason to why he wouldn’t take that contract.. But there isn’t anymore crying, or complaining that the Twins are cheap.. This is a very fair contract from the Twins, especially seeing how most pitchers give their team a hometown discount.
