BACKING UP THE TRUCK

Nothing earth shattering at the Santana presser. He’s glad to be here but if the Twins stepped up with more money than they offered he’s have stayed in the Twin Cities. He will adjust to life in NYC as he goes along as for playing baseball here well, baseball is baseball according to Santana.

Santana looked very comfortable at the podium and Paul LoDuca would be happy to know he speaks very good English. He handled the transition form English to Spanish questions like he was facing a .220 hitter.

Also glad to see the Mets use a pinstriped 57 Mets jersey and the classic blue hat for Santana’s unveiling hopefully those ugly ass black jerseys never see the light of day again.

Join us tonight on SPORTSTALKNY as we talk about the Super Bowl Champions NY GIANTS and take a look at the Mets and Highlanders as they get ready for spring training. It’s 65 degrees in NYC today and the truck is ready to leave Shea as pitchers and catcher meet next Friday in Port St Lonesome. Life is Good

Tune tonight at 9PM EST on USTREAM and join in as we are an interactive webcast. Call in at (631) 615-4799 or make your statements in our chat room either way for great sports talk tune in to SPORTSTALKNY

GIANTS ON PARADE

I haven’t been to one of these ticker tape parades since the New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup in 1994 ( the weather was a whole lot nicer that day as I remember sunny and warm today it’s damp and cold ) so I’m pretty excited about today’s Giants celebration.

When I got off the ferry this morning I walked toward Bowling Green which is the start of the parade. Even at 7:30 there were loads of fans lining up. As I continued up Broadway along the parade route there was just a throng of fans in Blue and White Giants jersey’s (funny thing is I haven’t seen any of the red jersey’s which Giants fans feel are jinxed)

As I look out my office window at 10AM my street Worth St corner of Church St is closed off and the cops are hustling the hordes up Worth to Broadway.

It seems the jersey of choice is MANNING 10 with BURGESS 17 close second. Not many SHOCKEY 80 as that used to be the top Big Blue jersey and no BARBER 21 in sight. Lots of throwbacks SIMMS 11, TAYLOR 56 and even a P. JOHNSON 52

It’s just great to see this mass of fans going along Church St to what looks to be about Franklin St where they are able to turn up to Broadway. One thing I do want to get is one of the posters I see some fans with and what are hanging from the lamp posts on Broadway. On a backdrop of a grass football field the heading says THIS IS NEW YORK CITY then there is a GIANTS helmet and underneath it reads THIS IS NEW YORK CITY FOOTBALL. Even though the team plays in East Rutherford NJ I still think the poster is cool.

Street are still packed it pays to have a badge today!

Tomorrow is another big day in NYC as Johan Santana has his press conference at Shea. Hopefully today’s parade is a dress rehearsal for a bigger and better one for the Mets in October!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was just a huge roar from the crowd on Broaday, time to hit the streets

DRESS FOR SUCESS

So what is the best dressed New Yorker wearing today? As I stated over the weekend, I was set to make a trip to the Mets Clubhouse store today to pick up a SANTANA 57 t-shirt (I think I’ll go for the road gray SANTANA jersey although my wife is getting a bit frustrated with my sense of fashion as she reminds me “Honey, your going to 50 in July do you think it’s time to dress like a grown up”?) Well as I picked up my newspapers to peruse on the Staten Island Ferry this morning, I see the MODELLS ad for SUPER BOWL CHAMPION GIANTS t-shirts and sweatshirts and all MODELLS will open at 7AM. This works out perfectly as the boat docks at 7:30AM and it’s not bone chilling cold out this morning so I decide this morning is walking day to work, this way I can stop in the MODELLS at 100 Broadway for my GIANTS swag. After picking up t-shirts and sweatshirts embossed with the unbelievable screen printing of NY GIANTS SUPER BOWL XLII CHAMPIONS (I buy these things in pairs, one for me one for my son. I see my wife’ point when my son and I start wearing the same clothes) what do I see on the rack in the back of the store? A line of brand new crisp SANTANA 57 black Mets t-shirt. I’ll take two please! Is that a way to start a Monday morning or what?

Tomorrow is the championship parade for the New York Football Giants and I think it’s the first time the Men of Mara have been given this honor after a championship. I ‘m pretty sure that the other two Super Bowl victories were celebrated in Giants Stadium as past NYC mayors have felt that since the G-Men play in Jersey they could go celebrate in Jersey so I feel we Giants fans owe a big thank your to Mayor Bloomberg for going forth with this parade.  All we need now is for the Mayor to give all civil servants the afternoon off tomorrow. It should be a good dress rehersal for October

I don’t get all the hoopla over the commercials on the Super Bowl as they are one huge distraction. But the one for Tide To Go with the talking stain on the shirt was funny and that Tide To Go works really well too.

SHOCK AND AWE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I watched it but I still don’t believe it. My son just looked at me at the end of the game and said “How come your not screaming”? I told him “I can’t I’m stunned”

No one saw this coming yes I know most Giant fans were getting more confident as the weeks of post season went on but roll the clock back to November and we were all ready to run Eli Manning and Ton Coughlin out of town. Now? Neither gut will ever have to pay for a meal in this town again. Throw Plaxico and Strahan in that group as well and don’t forget David Tyree and his HUGE catch and the front four Tuck (who could have been named MVP as well) Omenuyeria, Robbins beat the shit out of Tom Brady and Corey Webster who had the game of his life.

I will say give Eli and yes he has earned first name only status now in NYC  he was kicked around this town like no one since Patrick Ewing was disrespected here but unlike Ewing he has a ring. Coach Coughlin too hated by fans, players and press alike now you better get used to him he will be here awhile. Oh and Strahan? He will make a bigger career than Tiki Barber (how many holes do you think he punched in the walls of his home?) on TV off this?

First Santana, now the Giants, what a weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Think there will be a line at the local MODELS tomorrow?

GROUND HOG MY ASS, TWO MORE WEEKS UNTIL SPRING

I have got a TON of court cases to process tomorrow at work (the new NYC Noise Code revisions are keeping me knee deep in violations) but I will be taking time out at lunch time to head over to the Mets Clubhouse Store on 42nd ST to pick up a SANTANA 57 black Mets t-shirt. Hopefully I’ll be strolling down the street toward 8 ave and Modells to pick up a NY GIANTS SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS t-shirt as well.

This week could be an off the charts for NY sports. If the GIANTS win the Super Bowl word on the street is there will be a parade and rally at City Hall, just down the street form my office. This is surprising as the last two times the Giants won the Super Bowl the City of New York never acknowledge the feat. The Giants had a rally in Giants Stadium so this is a real change of heart by city officials.

Then on Wednesday, we break out the sandwiches and chicken fingers at Shea (I hope Jeffy buys the Boars Head cold cuts this time ) for what could be the last great news conference held in the old place as Johan Santana is introduced to the media and fans of the Blue and Orange. Less than two weeks until pitchers and catchers which we know is the sure sign that spring is around the corner and not what some ugly rodent tells us.

I can not read, see, or hear anymore Super Bowl reports for God sake play the game already!!!!!!!!!! I was out with a bunch of Giants fans last night and before they were liquored up pretty good these guys were WAY to over confident for me. In fact when I mentioned that everything about the Giants game plan is what they should not do (can’t score field golds must score TD’s , can’t have turnovers, can’t get in a shootout with Brady, can’t give Brady time in the pocket) and everything about the Patriots game plan is what they can do (score TD’s one every offensive possession, run the ball as well as pass, drop linebackers in underneath coverage) I was looked at like I was a government informant. I’m just stating facts fella’s, and beside I’m the only one with an Eli Manning jersey when Eli Manning jersey’s weren’t cool.

GO BIG BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JOHAN IS OURS, AND HE’S SPECTACULAR

7 years $150 million dollars and JOHAN SANTANA IS A MET.

First, let me apologize to Omar Minaya for not trusting his general managerial skills. And let me tip my Mets cap to Freddy Skill Sets for paying out this kind of scratch. No more Freddy Coupons

And here  I thought that was rain today in NYC instead it was tears of joys from Mets fans past

HICKORY-DICKERY-DOCK THE METS AND SANTANA ARE ON THE CLOCK

I know in my head, that the Mets and Johan Santana will come to an agreement if not by today’s 5PM deadline by tomorrow. But my blue and orange heart keeps sending a message to my head “Remember who you are”

Everything in Metsville is so damn difficult. We never make a deal that’s nice and neat there is always angst and heartache. Plenty of angst, in fact if some sabermatician would come with TAI (Team Angst Index) the Mets would be the top team every year.

It looks as if the stumbling block here in the Santana signing is years and guarantees. I think as we have to check our common sense as clear thinking people trying to pay our bills but working a helluva lot more than we should, at the door when it comes to the digits we will see in this contract.

It looks like Team Santana is looking for 6yr/$140 mil at least. It seems the Mets would like to go 5yrs and an option on the 6th that can be reached with easy to achieve incentives. To sweeten the pot a bit the Mets would pay Santana a $7mil signing bonus to add to his $13 mil salary for ’08. I have no inside info or any knowledge of what it will take to make this deal but I bet the hold up here is the guarantee on year 6, the perks such as air plane tickets for family members, use of luxury suite, all the hot dogs the kids can eat  and all the legal mumbo jumbo.

I just want the deal done and even then until I see SANTANA 57 shirts in the Mets Clubhouse I won’t be relived.
