What evidence do you have to back up that his message has gotten stale? The Mets as a staff have the 5th best ERA in the NL with 2 of their starters going down(Pedro and El Duque). Both forseeable, btw. The hitters are underachieving, not the pitchers. The age factor is coming into play with the 2 injured pitchers as well as Alou. That may be evidence that Willie Randolph and Omar Minayaa should go, not Rick Peterson.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('60303','Steve','What evidence do you have to back up that his message has gotten stale?
Steve, I'm watching a bunch of underachivers who have played .500 ball since last June.

I just think Peterson's message has gotten a little stale and maybe it's time for a new voice
Reply - Quote

What team are you watching? This team is above .500 with Beltran batting .220 something, Reyes batting .230 something, Delgado doing absolutley nothing until yesterday, Wright struggling over the last week, Alou out, Schneider out, Castillo struggling. The pitching is doing well. Rick Peterson is not the problem, if there is one. It is the age of team and the lack of hitting to date.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('60295','Steve','What team are you watching?
Wait. You mean Jorge Sosa isn't a bum who should be the mop up man instead of pitching high leverage situations? Oh! I see. Prof Rick is supposed to wave his magic wand and turn a 30 year old pumpkin into a back-end monster! He'll chant a spell and Schoenweiss will magically be able to get right handers out! One shake of his mullet and Aaron Heilman - in spite of all evidence to the contrary - will suddenly make pitches with 2 strikes!

No. He doesn't work miracles. Rick Peterson keeps the pitchers healthy and focused (mostly). He doesn't do their jobs for them.

Rick Peterson isn't the reason Delgado can't hit fastballs, Pagan can't hit breaking balls, and Jose Reyes is swinging at everything like it's 2004. Rick Peterson isn't the reason the Mets won't advance scout rookie pitchers. Rick Peterson isn't the reason Castillo is sucking up at bats in the 2 hole.

The Mets are under-acheiving on the mound. That's true. But they're also under-acheiving at the plate and in the field... The whole team suffers the same workman like ho-hum drudgery. That's not coming from the pitching coach. That all comes from the captain of the ship.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('60202','mr.bmc','Wait.
You make a strong case, Steve.

The fire (though not just among pitchers) is what was missing in September 2007, and after watching Ollie fall part last night, and then the bullpen in what till then looked like, and was supposed to be, and had to be, a very routine, over-matched Met victory...maybe moving Professor Rick is the lever to pull before things get too crazy in 2008. The Bobby Ojeda piece makes sense.

But I am even more worried about the hitting right now than the pitching. A look at the MLB batting leaders is horrible, everything led by our NL East competition. Best MLB BA: Chipper and Utley; top 4 most MLB homers: Utley, Burrell, Jacobs, Chipper; most NL RBIs: Burrell, Utley. And Smoltz has the best ERA in the NL, Hanley Ramirez is playing like the next MVP...etc. Our guys are not showing confidence, not taking good swings, making it easy for the opposition. So how does changing the Pitching Coach help solve this emergency?

Cliff Floyd is 5 for 15 with two homers in 2008 with Tampa Bay. Problem with Cliff, ove the guy, but an injury waiting to happen.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('60056','David in Manhattan','You make a strong case, Steve. \r\n\r\nThe fire (though not just among pitchers) is what was missing in September 2007, and after watching Ollie fall part last night, and then the bullpen in what till then looked like, and was supposed to be, and had to be, a very routine, over-matched Met victory...maybe moving Professor Rick is the lever to pull before things get too crazy in 2008. \r\n\r\nCliff Floyd is 5 for 15 with two homers in 2008 with Tampa Bay.
The fire (though not just among pitchers) is what was missing in September 2007, and after watching Ollie fall part last night, and then the bullpen in what till then looked like, and was supposed to be, and had to be, a very routine, over-matched Met victory…maybe moving Professor Rick is the lever to pull before things get too crazy in 2008. The Bobby Ojeda piece makes sense.

But I am even more worried about the hitting right now than the pitching. A look at the MLB batting leaders is horrible, everything led by our NL East competition.
