It’s not his fault but he has to go. Just like Rick Down was axed for the purpose of shaking up the offense, Rick Peterson should be relived of his duties as NY Mets pitching coach because it’s time for a new voice. I guess it’s my Bensonhurst upbringing to be cold hearted as they say in the social clubs of
Peterson is a very bright man and a terrific teacher who uses all the latest technology available to build up his pitchers. From looking at the latest collapse last night I just feel it’s time to go another way.
I know Aaron Heilman is not a fan favorite and I screamed FUCK last night as well after Felipe Lopez’ Grand Salami but I’m not ready to throw in the towel on him. Same with Sosa and Scott Schoenwiese as well. I’m not ready to burry these guys because my opinion of there struggles is it’s between the ears and not the shoulders.
I have never met Rick Peterson but from reading and seeing him in interviews he comes off as a very analytical guy but and he has done some great things in the four years he’s been the pitching coach but it seems to me his analytical ways have worn the pitchers out. Just looking at the body language of Heilman, Schoenwiese, Perez and Sosa proves that to me. I don’t know how much input Peterson has with Willie Randolph when it comes to who pitches when and where but Peterson doesn’t look like the type to push the issue with
Now who would replace Peterson with? The first name that jumps in my head is Leo Mazzone. Mazzone is working regional Saturday FOX telecasts and would most likely jump at the chance to work for the Mets. But the guy I have in mind has just what I’m looking for. He pitched in the big leagues and was successful. He fought back from setbacks. He’s worked in the bushes with young arms who responded to his coaching. He has a Mets pedigree and a Mets World Championship ring He is Bobby Ojeda.
Remember back when Peterson was hired, Ojeda was a little rough with his comment as he thought the job was his as he was in the organization working with HOJO in Brooklyn and when the job went to Peterson he was angry. If there is one thing missing from this Mets team right now its anger.
Bringing Ojeda in as pitching coach you go from the lets review the data approach of Petersons to a more old school strap it on mentality that Ojeda would bring. Peterson was very good with the hand on the shoulder way of dealing with pitchers maybe it’s time for a guy to get in someone’s face and challenge these pitchers (and players) to achieve an other level.
For all of Peterson’ learned ways he never pitched in a big league game. Ojeda has been through the wars of big league baseball in a fifteen year career. He’s started most games he was in but he has come out of the bullpen as well he can relate to pitchers as he has lived through highs and lows. He’s pitched in the two biggest pressure cookers in the sports world NYC and
This is a MUST move by Omar Minaya as it not only brings a new voice to a beleaguered pitching staff but it adds some life in a coach staff that is old, tired and stale.

Steve,
I like the Bobby O. idea. I also like the Mazzone possibility. And, fellow fans, PLEASE do not kill Willie for the move to bring Heilman in last night. The Nats announce Lastings in as a right-handed PH, it is a very important part of the game, and Ollie can’t hit the broad side of a barn. It was the right move, and it is not Willie’s fault that the right move produced the wrong result. Heilman carries himself as a guy who is unhappy with his role, something he has said many times. I think he’s a free agent this year. I’d get rid of his ass and get some value before we lose him. He’d never re-sign for this role, and I think his negativity is becoming a problem.
Now, my turn for a move I’d like to see. Wouldn’t it be nice to get Cliff away from the Rays and have him play first? He came up as a 1B (I still see that Hundley collision), and he loved being a Met, and he was popular in the clubhouse. Folks, Delgado is not in a slump. He is done, and he has quit on himself. Carlos, can you bend down for a grounder for $16 million?
Amen!! on Bobby Ojeda. Do it, do it now!! And I like the Cliff Floyd idea as well.
I love this blog — it’s hilarious. Keep it up.
You make a strong case, Steve.
The fire (though not just among pitchers) is what was missing in September 2007, and after watching Ollie fall part last night, and then the bullpen in what till then looked like, and was supposed to be, and had to be, a very routine, over-matched Met victory…maybe moving Professor Rick is the lever to pull before things get too crazy in 2008. The Bobby Ojeda piece makes sense.
But I am even more worried about the hitting right now than the pitching. A look at the MLB batting leaders is horrible, everything led by our NL East competition. Best MLB BA: Chipper and Utley; top 4 most MLB homers: Utley, Burrell, Jacobs, Chipper; most NL RBIs: Burrell, Utley. And Smoltz has the best ERA in the NL, Hanley Ramirez is playing like the next MVP…etc. Our guys are not showing confidence, not taking good swings, making it easy for the opposition. So how does changing the Pitching Coach help solve this emergency?
Cliff Floyd is 5 for 15 with two homers in 2008 with Tampa Bay. Problem with Cliff, ove the guy, but an injury waiting to happen.
Wait. You mean Jorge Sosa isn’t a bum who should be the mop up man instead of pitching high leverage situations? Oh! I see. Prof Rick is supposed to wave his magic wand and turn a 30 year old pumpkin into a back-end monster! He’ll chant a spell and Schoenweiss will magically be able to get right handers out! One shake of his mullet and Aaron Heilman - in spite of all evidence to the contrary - will suddenly make pitches with 2 strikes!
No. He doesn’t work miracles. Rick Peterson keeps the pitchers healthy and focused (mostly). He doesn’t do their jobs for them.
Rick Peterson isn’t the reason Delgado can’t hit fastballs, Pagan can’t hit breaking balls, and Jose Reyes is swinging at everything like it’s 2004. Rick Peterson isn’t the reason the Mets won’t advance scout rookie pitchers. Rick Peterson isn’t the reason Castillo is sucking up at bats in the 2 hole.
The Mets are under-acheiving on the mound. That’s true. But they’re also under-acheiving at the plate and in the field… The whole team suffers the same workman like ho-hum drudgery. That’s not coming from the pitching coach. That all comes from the captain of the ship.
Peterson-Good Replacement for Mc Fullofs–t, in The FOX Booth
What team are you watching? This team is above .500 with Beltran batting .220 something, Reyes batting .230 something, Delgado doing absolutley nothing until yesterday, Wright struggling over the last week, Alou out, Schneider out, Castillo struggling. The pitching is doing well. Rick Peterson is not the problem, if there is one. It is the age of team and the lack of hitting to date.
Steve, I’m watching a bunch of underachivers who have played .500 ball since last June.
I just think Peterson’s message has gotten a little stale and maybe it’s time for a new voice
What evidence do you have to back up that his message has gotten stale? The Mets as a staff have the 5th best ERA in the NL with 2 of their starters going down(Pedro and El Duque). Both forseeable, btw. The hitters are underachieving, not the pitchers. The age factor is coming into play with the 2 injured pitchers as well as Alou. That may be evidence that Willie Randolph and Omar Minayaa should go, not Rick Peterson.
the Mets are 8th in MLB in pitching, are you guys that crazy, why should Omar go? look where the Mets were 3 years ago, can the season play out a little, I meam Beltran hasn’t started hitting yet, the Mets will be fine, just freaking relax
WOW take two out of three from the Braves and the world is a bright blue and orange hue let’s hope we’re all hugging next week after the visit to the Snake Pit
