Is there a correlation between Harold Reynolds’ hiring by SNY and Lee Mazzilli getting a uniform job with the Mets? Am I nuts with this theory? Could Maz be the next manager of the Mets? Has the lackadaisical play that has carried over from The Collapse of last season made me rush to judgement? Is it easier to watch this team play baseball drunk rather than sober? I love a good conspiracy.

I hope not - Maz would be the only person WORSE than Willie as manager. I would openly boycott the team if Maz were promoted. he couldn’t even manage the local McDonalds. PROMOTE OBERKFELL

I’d take Maz in a heartbeat. NY guy, was on the 86 team, has managerial experience. I’d do it, though I don’t think the Reynolds thing is related. I think Maz just takes too much time off, and Matt Yalloff alone is DREADFUL. BTW, what’s with the guys this team hires for on air? The TV side is the best in baseball (get the MLB package and watch some of these bozos, they make Michael Kay look objective, and that, my friends, is virtually impossible). But, Wayne Hagin, are you kidding? A human dose of Ambien, as was Tom McCarthy. And Yalloff, he tries to be funny, and you hear the crickets chrip.

No, no, please. Not Maz. A nice guy, a halfway decent ballplayer in his day. Maz has the IQ of a bag of rocks. Hasn’t the Willie thing shown us that just being a Brooklyn guy isn’t enough to qualify one for the gig?

How about “the Kid”? He’s the anti-Willie. He’ll bring some exuberance and wake up the dead in the dugout.
I’ll second that on Wayne Hagin. Although I liked Tom McCarthy, the Murph will always be a tough act to follow. He’s the voice of the Mets to me, the greatest of all time, and can never me replaced. I miss the fasten-your-seat-belts and happy-recaps.

I would be so upset if Maz became manager. I can’t stand his arrogance. To me, he acts like he’s a baseball God.
Do you guys want someone to kick start this team the same way he did it in 1986?????????
That’s right, I said it! Give this guy a chance, trust me! He will light a fire under these guys. He wins everywhere he goes. He wants the job more than life itself. Make Carter his bench coach for an added bonus. Forget about his misdemeaners that were blown out of proportion. The guy deserves a chance. HE is what we need to kick this team in the ass. I would bet the house he would turn this team around. Hell, he could probably still play second base and hit better than Castillo.

Frank from NJ I would like nothing more than Backman as manager but lets face it - he’s too controversial for the Wilpons. Plus, the management has never embraced the 1986 team - they made tons of money, won a championship and finally invited them back in 2006 for a 20-year reunion. But that was very forced. I say Oberkfell gets promoted

if (when ?) a change in manager comes about I would like to see Kid Carter get the spot. He managed St. Lonesome and won a FSL title (no biggie I know) but he would be a breath of fresh air, proven winner and loves being a Met.
So far Wayne Hagin has done nothing for me. You need a NY voice doing radio becuase we’re spoiled brats.
Maz would not be my choice for mgr but I could see him as a bench coach.
It could be a very ugly weekend in Flushing!!!

I’m good with Carter, too. Although, as I mentioned yesterday, I’d change Omar first. I think Omar over-valued these guys and Willie has to clean up the shit. So, because we see Willie’s face, we tend to blame him. But, if he has nobody but Schoeneweis, what’s he going to do? If he has a $16 million dollar 1B that nobody wants (not even the Mets), what is he going to do?

Backman for manager all the way. What a chance for redemption. He’ll get the Mets fired up and he’ll be a good story. Even the Wilpons win!
Speaking of watching the Mets… did anyone notice there were more Mets fans in Washington than Nat fans??? I live in Virginia Beach and rarely get back to New York. It felt like a Citi Field preview Wednesday night. No one supports their team like Met fans. Thanks for making me feel at home Wednesday night!!

I can’t imagine they’ll give the job to Backman. Am I misremembering or wasn’t he fired from some independent league for his behavior?
Hey, I love a good discussion of the radio side of things. I doubt anyone listens to more ball games than I do.
Hagin’s a bit dull all right (had to google Ambien - no idea what that was). However, he’s far from the worst out there. I listen to all the Met games and two or three games a week from around the NL and believe me you could do a LOT worse than Wayne Hagin.
Hagin’s still new to the job and tends to (a) sometimes forget to describe what’s happened and (b) talk down to us, but he’s at least honest enough to say that so and so should have made that play or whatever (you gotta believe me that’s not always the case around the league).
However, I agree that a NY’er would have been better. Someone young, someone who knows Howie’s style and can work well with him would be a good idea. I think Howie’s great and I’m not sure I’d prefer Bob Murphy, to be honest. And I loved Murphy on the radio during those bleak days (late 70s/early 80s).
One more thing about Hagin. The fact he’s not a real fan can sometimes be good as he’s less emotional than Howie, who gets as frustrated as we all do. Hagin seems to be on more of an even keel.
