I've been thinking and reading a lot about Willie and the team this week. Some suggest Prof Rick go, some Willie go, some Omar go.

I think there's 2 problems with this team. First, Omar's done a terrible job putting a good 25-man roster together. Tim Marchman (NY Sun) has written about the poor second line talent on the team, and I agree. And that's besides the fact that the elderly can't be counted on to play every day.

So Willie's not had a great roster to work with. And especially with the pitching staff, he's not done well with what he's got.

But my vote is Omar goes first (if there's a decent GM around to replace him). That would certainly light a fire under Willie's butt as well as the rest of the team.

And if it doesn't, then Willie's next.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('65680','Gary','I\'ve been thinking and reading a lot about Willie and the team this week.
Long time reader...this is one of your finest posts ever. I like the Tom Kelly suggestion...had forgotten all about him. Completely disagree w the comment that Omar has to go, too. He has done well overall and deserves at least one more ride with another manager.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('65607','Rochester Fan','Long time reader...this is one of your finest posts ever.
I have never been an "axe Willie" guy, and still am not 100% in that camp, but when you have lifeless play, bonehead play, and a divided clubhouse, what else can you do? In my business we often talk about "giving people a reason to believe", and I have no reason to believe anything is going to change.

The Wilpons are hearing the most ominous message loud and clear. This team is becoming hard to watch. It is becoming hard to get emotionally involved with, and that has always been the calling card of Mets fans. Yes, we're out numbered by Highlander fans (although most are under 20 and could not tell you who Thurman Munson was if their lives depended on it). But, we have always taken it very seriously and been willing to support the team.

Who, folks, should be accountable for the divided clubhouse? OMAR. Who should be responsible that we have to refer to the best hitter on the team as "Grandpa"? OMAR.

So, I say they both go.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('65532','Rich','I have never been an \"axe Willie\" guy, and still am not 100% in that camp, but when you have lifeless play, bonehead play, and a divided clubhouse, what else can you do?
If I owned the Mets, Backman would be my first choice (baggage or not, this guy wants a job and wants to win and would light a fire under this team) and Carter would probably be my second.
Reply - Quote
