QUICK AND DIRTY

Some quick hits on the new and improved New York Mets (I’m up to my eye balls with REAL work so this will be quick)

Willie Randolph:

Joel Sherman in today’s NY Post verifies my thinking that at the Summit at Shea Monday, Freddy Skill Sets spoke to Randolph in perfect “Brooklyneese” , “ Lookit, Willie you gotta do what you gotta do to get deese guys in gear, you know what I mean”? If you gotta kick some ass, then we got your back”. Willie seems as much as ease as I’ve seen him as Mets headman. He even joked with Kevin Burkhart last night in his post game presser when Burkhart said “All the things that were illin this club have come together” and Willie started laughing and said to Burkhart “Illin? What is that a hip-hop term” and then Randolph joked “Yeah we’ve been illin’” Good to see Randolph has a sense of humor and new hammer speaking of which…

Carlos Delgado-

See what a couple of days on the pine can do, a couple of base knocks and a dirty uniform which Randolph noted in on uncertain words that it’s about time CD got down and dirty. Willie will throw him a bone tonight and let him play tonight against the lefty phenom Clayton Kershaw but from reading Randolph’s comments when he said that without Grandpa Moises and Ryan Church he really has no choice but to play Delgado. Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Petey-

Is scheduled to pitch against the Giants in SF in Tuesday and reports are he is throwing better than he has in years. Can’t wait until Tuesday to see it for myself

Pelfrey/Vargas-

Somebody loses a job on Tuesday and for what it’s worth I’d love to see Pelfrey go to short relief and Vargas stay in the rotation, as much as I like Carlos Muniz, I’d have to send him back to NOLA. Maybe Omar Minaya will make this move to appease me.

Nick Evans-

Looks a little lost at the plate but I hope he gets to play tonight. He seems fooled by big league breaking balls but I’d love to see if he can adjust and be effective at the big league level. I’d play an outfield of Evans-Beltran-Tatis tonight.

The Curley Shuffle-

Listing to Boomer and Carton this morning, Carton played a clip from last night’s game of the Curley Shuffle being played on the Shea Jumbotron. The Curley Shuffle is a Keith Hernandez fave from the glory days of the 80’s Hey, it beats the shit out of the Rally Monkey. By the way I have been wearing my 1999 MOJO’ RISEN’ T-shirt. Whatever helps the cause.

OK, Nick Evans may have a bright future. But, WTF?? We are trying to win ballgames and this kid is in way over his head. When does Pagan come off the DL? Why is he in the witness protection program?

Gimp got hurt, wow, never saw that coming!

Winning 4 of 5 and Santana up next, Pedro back in town…all of a sudden we are living large.

I listened to the radio broadcast for the Saturday 3-2 win over LA, and I continue to have a beef with our announcers, both of them, especially with the new guy Wayne Hagin. They seem so indignant with the players when the ball is dropped, when our guys make outs out, etc. Then later, when a Met makes a play or raps a hit, it’s like, boy, its about time, he finally got it right. In effect, they take you back to the previous misplay or yesterday’s loss just when you want to be appreciating a good play. They do this constantly, and smugly.

I am amazed that a lot of their routine in-game banter is mud-throwing at the Mets.
If they were ex stars like Darling and Mex, they could get away with this. But they aren’t, and it comes off like carping and whining. An announcer should call the game…like Cohen and Murph…paint the picture, give it life, but let the fan fill in the blanks as far as evaluating the performance.

Wayne and Howie come up with a gripe early and hammer on it all game long. One day it was how with Oliver Perez pitching, there is no way the fielders can keep their heads in the game…those three errors by Pagan, Castillo, and Wright really should be charged to Perez. Last night it was Reyes’s early error. They brought it up about 15 times, and made it seem in the radio descriptino like the easiest play ever, “he dropped the ball”, “he failed to make the catch and let a run in”. But when I saw the video replay, later on, I was amazed to see that the ball came in fast and low on a bounce, nothing automatic about catching that ball. On the 45 second TV highlight, I hear the Fox announcers say “a tough hop”, “sort of skidded in there”, “it took one of those in-between bounces.” But my hometown announcers are, as I say, so indignant, and so into evaluating instead of just describing the game, they end up talking down their own team.
