Steve,
Great point on Smoltz. The old cliche about how you never want to see someone hurt and all that. And I never do…but I CANNOT feel sorry for that guy. He has inflicted so much pain on us over the years, as a closer and starter, it is impossible to feel bad. Plus, I will never root for the Braves as a team or any of them as individuals. My biggest nightmare is a Highlander/Braves WS, both times it happened it made me sick.
Rich, normally I would agree with you but I’ve always liked Smoltz. In the 90′s even though they talked about the “trio” in Atlanta, he never really seemed like part of it. It seemed like Glavine and Maddux were asshole buddies. Smoltz was the quiet, go out there and get it done kind of guy and i respected that. Also, I love a pitcher that throws in the upper 90′s and also has 3-4 other pitches he throws. As a pitcher, you couldn’t help enjoy watching him pitch. His smooth wind up reminded me of Gooden’s. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with teams like Atlanta getting hit with injuries though
I tell you, I’d have much rather have had Smoltz in a Met uniform than Glavine. He’d have gone to Atlanta looking for blood, not golfing buddies.
