I have to admit I watched more of the Celtics-Lakers Game 1 last night (Paul Pierce is THE TRUTH!!!!!!!!!) than I did of the Mets-Padres. I was kinda drained after my little league team dropped a 5-1 decision to the first place team in our division. Before the game I had a team meeting (yeah desperation time) I just wanted to let my guys (Like Willie I have Big Boys too) that this team beat us on a steal of home last time we played them and how we have to stay alert and play air tight defense. So of course we throw the ball around like there was dog shit on it and let 3 unearned runs score in the top of the 1st. That’s what happens when you play a 7:45PM game on a day when 9 of my players had the day off from school (yesterday used to be called BROOKLYN DAY celebrating the Dutch coming to Brooklyn and Queens and Public Schools were always closed in those boros on that day, well it seems the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island got pissed off about being excluded so now it’s known as BORO DAY and all the city Public school kids have off. Political correctness strikes again!) and they have been lounging playing video games and eating potato chips, ahhhhhhhhhhh I digress.
From watching bits and pieces of Big Pelf and following along on GAMEDAY ( yes, I am out of my mind) it looked like Pelfrey had great velocity on his fastball hitting 96, 97 and 98 on the radar gun but he seemed to have (here we go again) command issues with his slider and off speed pitch. One positive out of this outing was Pelf getting out of big spots in the 3rd and 5th so that’s a good sign a sign of toughness if you will but I still think Pelfrey is a closer in starters clothing.
If you watch the Mets enough you see things no other team in baseball can do. Last night losing in the bot of the 9th to a team that brings a pen knife to shoot out like the Padres just adds to Mets lore. How in the world do you get ahead 0-2 on Scott Hairston and then proceded to throw four balls in a row? Forget the fact that Schoeneweis hitting McAnulty, that lead off walk to Hairston was the killer. Â
I have no clue if any of the players the Mets drafted will become anything but so far I haven’t read any place that the Mets draft sucked so that’s a good thing. There was a pattern of college hitters and it looks like 1B Ike Davis (a baseball name if ever there was one) and shortstop (2nd baseman or catcher) Reese Havens will be fast tracked in through the system. For a better read on the draftees check out MetsGeek. I’m sure most of these picks will be headed to
With Abraham Nunez up from NOLA (see ya Nick Evans, tell the kids in Bingo the big leagues ain’t no joke) this will help spell Gimp Castillo and will allow Damien Easley (3 for 12 with 2HR vs. Randy Wolf) to play some first base until Omar Minaya wakes up and trades, releases, beats up Carlos Delgado and gets a player who will actually dive for a ground ball and hit at least league average. By the way no way in hell does Delgado get in the line up tonight against Randy Wolf as Mr. Clean Pants is 3 for 23 .130avg 2BB and 10K against the lefty. Gimp Castillo by the way is 17 for 40 .425 against the Wolf Man and Fernando Tatis is a lifetime 1 for 17. Can someone tell me what the Mets are waiting for to bring up Val Pascucci from NOLA?
Ryan Church and his wife reached out to the fiancé of Donald Leo the crane operator who was killed last week in Manhattan to help her with any expenses she had but the fiancé, Ms. Belcastro turned down the offer from Church because Mr. Leo was a die hard Highlander fan and she felt he would not want her to take the Mets players money. I guess Ms. Belcastro will buy Highlander season tickets with the big payoff she will get from the lawsuits she and the Leo family hope to win.

Possibly my favorite heading on any of your posts yet. That game really was a head scratcher.
I was encouraged by Pelfrey’s performance last night because he got people out when he didn’t have his best stuff. I think that’s what he has to learn. Being tough counts and Pelfrey has often pitched like a fragile flower.
Schoenweiss has been great, right up until I heard Joe Benigno telling him so on WFAN. I think that was Monday, maybe last Friday. Whatever. He’s been awful since. Joe B better ‘turn the page’ on Schoenweiss.
Eagle, I think we are starting to see Big Pelf grow up before our eyes
I had no problem with Willie using Scho in that spot he has been pitching well and there were lefties coming up sometime Mets luck happens
Steve,
I can only your imagine your reaction was similar to mine when Gimp stayed back on that ball leading off the bottom of th first.
I think Keith and Gary are right. Church is not right…is this going to go on all year?
Aggrevating loss last night. Coming off a loss the night before, with the Ace on the hill, they came out flat as a pancake. I’m losing the good feeling from last week. Plus, if you watch the way the Phillies are winning, there seems to be a mojo down there. 5.5 out, boys.
Is is just me, or do the last two games remind you of the last two months?
