If that is the case, all the more reason to fault Omar for not getting this done sooner. I think the Wilpons made him say that it was his decision over and over again (he says it so much that it is so clear that it WAS NOT his decision), so that when the Wilpons can Omar's ass, they can say thst this is their way of showing their displeasure on how it was done. Gives them another reason to justify the eventual dumping of the GM. If it were me, I'd say "You're fired because you think it is ok to say you have a contending team, when you put an injury-prone 41-year-old in LF with no back up plan.
