OMAR FIDDLES, WHILE HIS LINEUP FIZZLES

If you told me that Omar Minaya released a player last night after that embarrassing performance I don’t think Claudio Vargas would have been the player I would have picked. I know Vargas got lit up last night but I don’t see how he gets his walking papers. I mean it no great loss that Vargas hit’s the waiver wire and I am a fan of this years Heath Bell, Carlos Muniz but when you list the names of players who need to be chucked Vargas is down the list.

After last night game J-Mann sat down for his post presser to discuss among other things his ouster from the game. J-Man’s post games comments are becoming must see TV. First he discussed the bush league move by home plate ump Brain Runge (Memo to Mex: Instead of kissing Runge’s ass last night on TV you should have put your foot in it.) for baiting Carlos Beltran and then for bumping Warlord Jerry. I hope Freddy Skill Sets makes a phone call to his best Bud and lets him know that anything less than a 5 game suspension for Runge is a travesty and he will have his lackeys at SNY devote a three hour block (not pre-empting Loudmouths, or the classic Beer Money both starting Curley Carlin) to exposing the inept work of MLB Umpires.

J-Man brought up the word “changes in the lineup” last night but what do you have to make change with? Robinson Cancel, who must have found the empanada stand across from the Queens Center Mall as that boy is hefty? Fernando Tatits? He of the .254/.289/..324 line. Of course there is fan fav Everyday Endy who is smashing the ball at a robust .234/.282/..297 clip or how about the latest find in the Omar Minaya Washed Up Ballplayers Collection, Trot Nixon. Yes I know he has seen limited duty and his line of .148/.281/.296 may not be a fair assessment as he is sure capable of at least .225/.315/.380 which would get him a contract for next year. You can shovel shit from one corner and put it in the other but still and all you still have shit which is what this Mets lineup is right now nine corners of shit.

You know what I like most about J-Man? He knows he’s playing with house money as the interim manager, plus he sends out cryptic messages to Mets fans. If the Mets have some sort of miracle run and make the post season, he gets the full time gig as manger. If they continue to suck (which is the odds on choice) he has a gig at Jessup College in his hip (very hip) pocket. I love how he lets you know that Omar needs to make a bold move here not just some bullshit wavier wire pick up but something BOLD like release Carlos Delgado and Oliver Perez (sorry Howard Megdal and Coop but I resign my membership from the Oliver Perez Fan Club) Forget about sending OP to NOLA to straighten him out, it’s past that point. Send him to Scott Boras and let him worry about it. There is no way the Mets are going to bid on OP to come back next season so cut your losses and let him go. Delgado should have been cut a long time ago and the only reason he’s still here is M-O-N-E-Y and nothing else. The old expression is “Money talks, bullshit walks” but in the Mets version bullshit walks all right every night to first base.

I can’t believe that Omar Minaya has been so passive on the player movement front. It tells me his job is safe as he has shown no immediate worry about fielding a completive baseball team as if his job is in jeopardy.

I’m going to the game tonight, so if you see a guy having an animated discussion from the third base side with Brian Runge you’ll know who it is.

The only saving grace, in my mind, is that genius Omar’s job must be on the line if they don’t play into October. That being the case, maybe some the needed moves will be made, especially now that J-Man has his ear. Have the onions to release Delgado, Omar. It’ll send a message. Put Castillo on the DL and tell him to come back when he can play like the rest of the big boys (2010?), with a healthy body. Don’t worry, Omar, you signed him for 4, so he’ll be around when he’s healthy.

The Worst Team that Money Could Buy.

Like I’ve said before, start trading everything with value and wipe the slate clean except Reyes and Wright and maybe Maine. Everyone else is expendable for the right prospects.

No harm, no foul, Steve. Hey, I have it on record that I was FOR trading Oh Pea at the beginning of the season, after the Johan trade. THAT would have been a sell high recoup. Did Omar listen to me though? Noooooo. Although believe it or not, I think that we can still get something of value for Pea – every team needs a good junkballer at the back of the rotation.

The more I think about things, the more I realize how the stubbornness of some of the Mets fans in failing to realize how bad this team really is, and how flawed its makeup is, has perhaps unwittingly fed the monster. Face it, this team is a .500 team, and barely. It’s performed that way for some time now. As Bill Parcell’s once said, a team is what its record says it is, or something like that. It’s time we all stopped shading things in rose and faced the grim reality — this is, indeed, one of the worst teams money could buy, and turn our focus to the architects of the mess, with a capital MESS.

I wasn’t sold on Perez once he set himself up for all the pressure of a walk year. He’s a mental midget.

The worry with Omar is that he can do a lot of damage trying to right the team. He’s done enough already. You can’t let him try and fix this if you have doubts about him.

The Mets are not a move or two away from a World Series appearance. I wouldnt release the players just wait until other playoff contenders need something to push them over the top and let us pick their farm system for our established players(for a change)

For me, the Castillo deal is the same catastrophe as the Kazmir deal. Each, horribly illogical.

The club needs to be a seller, not a buyer as the deadline approaches. And yes, sell, everything that isn’t nailed down.

Problem is, there is absolutely no way on God’s green earth that Omar is going to do that, which would be admitting that the roster he’s assembled is the problem.

But yeah, the way to go about this is to keep Reyes, Wright, Maine, Santana, (what, you think anyone else is gonna pick up his salary right about now?) Joe Smith, and Church. Everyone else is available at the deadline, and in the offseason.

More likely though, Omar will trade Carp, Niese, and Tejada for a middle aged middle reliever. Can’t wait.

I’m of the opinion that Pelfrey is still worth keeping. Otherwise, I agree. Sell, sell, sell.

I’ve been screaming from the mountain tops since spring training—he is Boras’ problem. If scotty wants the big contract he can find a place to be traded to for = or better value, if not,say hello to long man status Ollie cause you don’t have the stuff to be a starter on this team, and THAT is saying something

As for Runge, if you can reach him, spit on his punk ass for all of us.

  10. Rich June 25, 2008 7:24 pm

But who is going to buy? Who wants Gimp, Delgado, Tatis, OP, Alou, etc.? Maybe something could come back for Heilman or Schoeneweis, as bullpen help is always needed by contenders. But, as someone above said, they’ll never do it. They wouldn’t under normal conditions, but going into Citi Field, FORGET IT, folks. Let’s just hope that the icon of middle aged, past-their-prime acquisitions doesn’t trade the few good young players we have. I don’t trust him as far as I could throw him. Cerrone said in his blog today that rumor is Fred and Jeff may sign Omar to a long-term contract. Time to go puke now.

The answer to first base in my opinion is Mike Carp. Been batting between .330 and .350 all year at AA. Could also bring up Tony Armas from AAA. For all I hear abbout the Mets having no prospects, I see 4 or 5 guys at AA batting over .300, and the Mets seem to keep their best prospects at AA, and promote them to the bigs from there. The outfield situation could easily be solved in the next few days if Church is healthy. For those of you who say only keep Reyes and Wright, I can’t believe how easily you dismiss Beltran. All he does is produce (need I go over his numbers over the past 2.5 years once again?). In addition to his numbers, in past couple of weeks, he has hit 2 significant home runs (late in game when tied or behind), made a heady play going home on a ball that was not far from the catcher and gotten thrown out of a game. Isn’t that what most of you seem to want, a guy who gets angry/emotional? As far as Omar being passive on the player movement front, what significant deals are made in baseball significantly before the trading deadline? Not many.
