OOPPS THERE IT IS!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I should consider myself lucky that I didn’t see last nights game as I attended the SI Highlanders-Aberdeen Iron Birds game last night (a double header swept by the Baby Bastards) so I missed John Maine joining The Dead Pitching Arm Society and the three miscues by the firm of Gimp, Sugarpants, and Limparm as the lack of the “fundi’s” did the Mets in again.  Add in the inability for this feeble offense to score runs it looks like the Cardinals didn’t even have to break a sweat to beat the Flushing Failures.

I don’t know about you but by the time I hit 13 years old, my parents did away with bringing in a baby sitter to keep an eye on me when they went out so it’s a real head scratcher that a 25 year old “man”(?) needs mature guidance as Jose Reyes seems to need. I guess not having Jose Valentin around makes a big difference so J-Man has looked to Gimp Castillo to take over the mentor role. It’s kind of the Latin version of Uncle Buck having Gimp look after Little Jose.

I hope you didn’t buy that Andy Phillips Mets jersey as Phillips Met career is done as he was DFA to make room for Tony Armas Jr. who makes his Mets debut today as the Montreal Expos Revival Tour rolls on.

Give J-Man this he is a much more pro-active manager than his predecessor as he has seen the light and benched Carlos Delgado (Delgado is Spanish for “Can’t bend down”) for defensive purpose with Fernando Tatis which is really a swift kick in the ass to Delgado as Tatis is not even a firstbase man.

I never knew Jim Plummer and after reading all the testimonial it’s my loss. Plummer it seems was not only loved by the Mets front office but by the players as well. With all the underachieving and shoddy play by this Mets team it looks like the biggest loss of the year for the Mets is losing Plum.

Darling had the best comment in the post game. “The Mets had a run in 2006, and since then, they have gotten old right before our eyes. Take Delgado. Older players can and do have good days. Delgado had 9 RBI in game one Friday. But the Mets need Delgado to have 9 RBIs in a week, not a day. Sometimes older players don’t do that.”

Right on, Ronnie! I’ve been saying that for a year now. This team will have moments, like when some of Frank Howard’s fly balls did clear the wall when he was older. But, most of them did not. That is the problem with the Mets. Too often, the older guys just don’t come through (Gimp, Alou, Delgado). So, Fred and Jeff, hold the architect responsible and make the move at the end of the year.

    Steve,

Howie was clearly upset when talking about Plummer.

It is not just with the Mets…this year most of the older players, an exception is Chipper Jones (and he has been injured too), are performing below expectations. In fact all MLB is hitting less.

No steroids and fewer performance enhancers must be a big part of this…any other theories out there?

The Omar Minaya system of getting value from older veterans clearly has to evolve to these new norms, and I am sure that Minaya is as aware of this as anyone.

Missing the “greenies” is hurting these guys the most. I’m sure Keith Hernandez will attest to that since he used to eat them like candy and then drink hot coffee in the dugout on 95 degree days to melt the pills faster so they would work quicker and I’m sure most of you guys know that he said this himself (I forget which Mets book it was I read it in). The older they get the quicker they get tired but this should have no effect on guys 29 and under. We are now entering an Era where baseball numbers are going to be way off until things balance themselves out and they figure out new undetectable drugs they can use to cheat with again.

    Frank,

I agree with you on this. I think it’s another reason why younger teams are doing well this year and why the league overall road winning percentage is down so much.
