I not usually a big fan of the Home Run Derby but I must say last nights event was astonishing. Between the life story of Josh Hamilton, who still has to have a chaperone to keep him on the straight and narrow, and his home run hitting prowess and having Clay Counsil his 71 year old batting practice pitcher was something to behold. You have to had to sit in the upper deck of that stadium in the Bronx to really appreciate how majestic those home runs were that Hamilton launched. Even the ones that were blasted into the Calcutta Section of the Stadium (a/k/a the bleachers) were one of a kind jolts. The guy I felt bad for was Justin Morneau who won due to the fact that Hamilton was exhausted. Morneau looked embarrassed to take the trophy and he even tried to get away from being interviewed by Erin Andrews and no one runs AWAY from the lovely Erin.
Looking back on the Mets first half it’s hard to believe that on June 24th this team was ready to have 25 toe tags attached to thier feet. That was the night the Seattle Mariners, used Oliver Perez and Claudio Vargas as batting practice pitchers to the tune of an 11-0 win. That series deflated all of us and the Highlander series was break even as was the Cardinal series, then came the series I figured would end my summer. On July 4th the Mets headed down to Philly with Johan Santana pitching in the game we all could not wait for since he came over in the winter. He pitched a game that was ace worthy but came out of the game after eight innings 2-2. I wanted Santana to come out for the ninth but J- Man felt he had enough and brought tin Dirty Duaner who got Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell to strike out but allowed Pedro Feliz to nail a double down the left field line and then Shane Victorino followed that with a game wining single to right and I was ready to shift into who gives a fuck mode as it pertained to the 2008 Mets season. But a funny thing happened since that loss and that’s the Mets haven’t lost a game since. All of a sudden Big Pelf (Congrats on Player of the Week Award) OP and the bullpen grew balls of steel and Fernando Taits turned back the clock, Gimp Castillo and his walker got out of the way and new Warlord Jerry/Dean of Old School Warthen way of doing business took over and the Mets looked transformed. Now remember before we all pee our pants with joy, these are New York Mets so while I love the atmosphere on Sunday night as Pelf went all Tom Seaver on the Rockies ass I keep telling myself my heart still has scars from this organization so I still need to see a bit more before I fall over myself and say THE METS ARE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw today that the Mets are not planning any type of Mike Piazza Day this year not even when the Countdown to the last game at Shea gets to 31 and that’s just a really really bad move by the Mets no not just bad but embarrassing.
Joel Sherman in his column in the Post says Omar will not be active in the trade market. While I think that Omar is a first class sand bagger, he not only doesn’t have many trading chips but they can’t give up any more prospects as the farm system needs to be left to grow. I do believe one thing Omar said that the Mets can not do anymore of those 4 for 1 deals. Left the Teen Aged Hitting Machine go another two or three weeks at Bingo then bring him up and spot him with Tatis and Anderson or Pagan in LF and take your chances.

I agree, bad move by not having a Piazza day. Why do the Mets seem so bad at honoring former players and teams. Didn’t it take 20 years to have a 1986 Mets night too?
about a week ago, I threw a post in there about bringing FMart up and didn’t really get much of a response but now you guys are starting to come around
It can’t hurt to bring this kid up and let his enthusiasm get contagious on the rest of the Mets (not that they need it right now though).
I also want to agree with your sentiments about not getting too high on the Mets just yet. I’ve seen way too many times they put on a winning streak and followed with an equal or worse losing streak but i will say that watching this team lately, I feel like it’s a completely different team than 2-3 weeks ago.
DO YOU GUYS REMEMEBER:
Crap, didn’t mean to submit yet…
Do you guys remember back in 1990 when the mets were picked to win the division easily and by early June were something like 9.5 games behind the pirates? Then the Mets won something like 18 out of 21 games before the All Star break to either tie or get withing 1 game of the Pirates? Then the all star break came and as soon as it was over and the season started again, the Mets got ICE cold and the Pirates never looked back? This win streak to get back within a game of the Phils feels just like that and it scares me. The Mets were so hot and then the all star break came and ended it. I hope for once, Met history doesn’t repeat itself.
I have a new chant…
Jay Horowitz must go…. This guy has been here too long and the Public Relations Dept for the Mets Suck. He has no clue on how to steal headlines from the Skankies and how to get the fans excited about being a Met fan. It would be AWESOME to have a Piazza day. He had a great career as a MET and is a fan favorite.
JAY HOROWITZ MUST GO!!!! JAY HOROWITZ MUST GO!!!! JAY HOROWITZ MUST GO!!!! JAY HOROWITZ MUST GO!!!! JAY HOROWITZ MUST GO!!!! JAY HOROWITZ MUST GO!!!!
Watching the red carpet bullshit. Who is this Carissa Thompson???? Holy shit! What a hottie!! Spike Lee wears his Brooklyn Dodgers garb all the time, but now is sporting Yankees garb and talking about what a big Yankee fan he is. Hmm…
How about getting D Wright on the air? Talk to him about being a Met, the game is in NY! Oh, he’s on right now! Bet he wants a piece of Carissa!
Go NL!!!!
She asked him about being a Met in NY. He said he’s had many thrills, including going into Highlander Stadium and SWEEPING them this year.
Go D Wright!
Ok, last comment. They just brought Steinbrenner out in a cart. Yogi (the man he fired 18 games into the 1985 season and who swore he’d never go back to Highlander Stadium) kissed George, and so did Reggie (the man George ran out of town for Winfield). Is there anything real about that organization? It is made up of fake smiles and public relations.
That scene, among a million other things, ade me glad I’m a Mets fan.
I thought for a second that they were kissing him as if he was the POPE!!! George looks real bad!!!! Why did they need all that security around him. He was in a golf cart at Yankee Stadium. They should have had the POPE leave his enclosed car for the OLD FUCKER!!!
Have to have a day for #31. Should have done already, and while I agree the Mets take too long to honor their players (as well as it takes them too long to put guys on the DL), we don’t know for sure that they weren’t set to have that day and Mike said he didn’t want it yet. They may not have asked him, but we don’t know for sure.
I loved seeing all those hall of famers, though I was hoping to see Tom Terrific out there, but the whole Yankee Stadium theme that dominated everything and monopolized the commentaries was excruciating, and then that Steinbrenner moment was just disgusting. For anyone that was still around at the very very end of the long broadcast, did you see the Master Card Priceless Moment? Which should have been a replay of Drew’s homer, or Young’s winning RBI, one of the various defensive gems, even could have been the Josh Hamilton heroics of the previous night…but no, the 208 All Star Game Master Card Priceless Moment was Steinbrenner arriving in his cart and getting kissed by those hypocritic highlander death-eaters, reggie, yogi, goose.
Give me regular season baseball without all this hype and idiocy. Give me my Mets!
