From all reports last night’s Billy Joel concert was the event of a lifetime. I guess if you’re a Joel fan it was but as an angry young teen when Billy Joel was playing Piano Man, I was into the Sex Pistols and “Anarchy in the U.K.” and hanging out at Max’s Kansas City, CBGB and the Mud Club to name a few of the landmark clubs during the Punk era. So as much as I hate to enrage you Billy Joel fans who read this site as much as I had no use for Joel back in the day I still have no use form him today. Just not my kind of music or performer. I mean how can you compare a Billy Joel performance to Wendy O Williams and the Plasmatics at the Heat Club on North Moore St. Tell me what’s better than Williams taking apart an old Chevy on stage with a chain saw topless while the band riffs away.
Having Billy Joel perform the last concert at Shea was a nice safe choice. See me I would have had a concert that would have rocked the living shit out of Shea. Let’s face it Shea is the dive bar of stadiums and what every good dive bar needs is an ass kicking juke box. So here is a post I did when Billy Joel was announced as the last concert at Shea act (I was not very happy as you can see) and some of the bands I would have perform at my “Kranepoolpolooza” concert. Plus I would add the New York Dolls, Talking Heads, Blondie, Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, The Fleshtones, Tom Verlaine and Television, Pati Smith, Black 47, Mink DeVille, The Dictators and to close the show the Rolling Stones. At the end of the show, female Go-Go dancers would go into each section of the stadium passing out ratchet sets and sledge hammers to let the fans start the demolition and carry out what ever they can as a souvenir of Shea
Santana-Cueto tonight as Jerry’s Gangsta’s go for 10 straight Be there 7:10 PM Aloha!

I went to the concert last night, sorry, Mr. Kranepool, but I do like the Piano Man. As I’m sure you know by now, he had John Mayer, Don Henley, and John Mellancamp as guests and it was awesome. It was my second concert there (Stones in 89). I wanted to kick the people out of my seats in upper 26, row c 1-4, but I had to tell myself I was there for a different purpose. Knowing that the Beatles played there added a lot for me.
Nice interlude, back to baseball baby!
the special guests make it even more pathetic, mainstream, and the kind of music your parents listen to.
i’m with you, steve. billy joel was the kind of thing you pretended to like in high school while sneaking down to bleecker bob’s.
to quote the great mojo nixon, “don henley must die”
Dear Kranepool, Eat me. Yours truly, Billy Joel
Mink DeVille? Alright! Willy singing “Spanish Stroll”? Now THAT would be a great way to close out ‘ol Shea.
I’d be at the front of the line for Kranepoolpolooza can the Dead Boys get in on that gig too?
Right there with you, Caryn and Krane.
Heat! I was there. Thanks for the memories.
On Joel, its a LI thing, I’ll never understand.
Kinda like Springsteen and NJ, at least Bruce is, … less embarrassing, maybe?
Back to baseball, indeed. (BTW, it’s still rock and roll to me.)
And we are back, back in first!! Mets 10, Reds 8.
This from the NY Times today:
“In the fourth, Carlos Delgado blasted a 3-1 pitch out of the stadium to give the Mets a 2-0 lead. He went 3 for 4 and has 20 R.B.I. in his last 18 games. Since July 1, Delgado is hitting .403 with 10 R.B.I. and 4 home runs.”
Remember when everyone was saying in May and June, to just cut Delgado and patch together a first base crew out of back-ups? Playing baseball, and being a fan, requires patience, faith, character, loyalty…since even your guy hitting .300 has to make seven outs for every three hits, and will go 0 for 5 like Reyes did last night. Or the guy hitting .200 will win you a game with a clutch hit or fielding gem.
I loved that ninth inning sequence when A.Reyes singled to center, Wright hit the opposite field homer, Beltran pulled a ball to right, Easley and Delgado hit singles to the opposite field, Tatis pulled one down the line…that was a team demonstration of good hitting and using the whole field.
To the players, to Hojo, to the absolute ruler of the brood, Jerry Gangsta, this cold Rheingold is for you!!!!!!!!
I wish I could be confident that Mets fans will not boo their players the rest of the year In my book, the only acceptable exception is for lack of hustle.
Phils are desperate, trading off their future to get Blanton.
David
You’re talking to me there. I was one who definitely thought Delgado was through. He’s been tremendous lately and it’s great to see. I don’t see them often, but from listening to Howie it sounds like he’s even playing better defense or at least trying to get to balls that he gave up on too quickly in the past.
Howard, How are you? You would be on the bill for Kranepoolpolooza as well, Hey I just thought I’d get Kathy and Joe to flim it
Will, Of course The Dead Boys would be on the show I’m embarassed that I forgot them as “Sonic Reducer” is on my iPod
David, I’m with Eagle I was ready to ship Delgado out but he is clicking and give him credit but don’t give him a contract extention.
Hey Billy Joel, any place any time I’ll kick your old decrepit ass
Love the fake Billy Joel comments, from time to time I mock him on my blog and I get comments from other Fake Billy’s looking to kick my ass. Bring it fake piano man.
