Before I get to the Mets climbing atop first place in the NL East I need to discuss the bullshit that is coming from Philadelphia AND from “our guy” Boardwalk Lee Mazzilli when it comes to Jose Reyes. My question to ass hats like Larry Anderson and Chris Wheeler the Phillies broadcasters is “Were you this outraged over Brett Myers beating up his wife as you are over Jose Reyes home run trot”? I mean com’on get over it will you. Same goes for catching instructor Mick Billmeyer (I’m not kidding here) you share a clubhouse with a man who beat up his wife in the street in Boston a few years back and I don’t remember hearing much outrage out of the Phillies clubhouse over that but Reyes reacting after hitting a big home run gets the blood boiling. The whole Philadelphia Phillies organization should be ashamed of themselves. Boardwalk Lee is another pant load with anti-Reyes venom Hey Lee I guess you forget the 1986 team that liked to stir the pot and got your washed up ass a World Series ring,
How about killing Jimmy Rollins for being late to yesterday’s game? That’s a more serious crime I think than celebrating a home run don’t you think. I am so sick of the dumbass in the media I swear I’d like to do a Buzz Bissinger on all their sorry asses.
Now we have a rivalry and hopefully MLB and the Used Car Salesman will stay out of the way and let this play out. Please no warnings or discussions let the players take care of business. If the benches have to clear let them clear and don’t worry about the media that I swear is made up of guys who were either picked last on teams as kids or had their lunch money taken from them. Anyone you has played organized sports know that emotions at time run high and shit happens I guess if the Phillies have a problem with Jose Reyes ( How about Shane Victorino spouting off, I guess it was ok to acted like trained seal looking for a sardine at second base the other day) then bring it on. I have more faith in Warlord Jerry that even though he reads the works of Gandi, he has some Malcolm X in him.
YES, YES, YES I was ready to burry Carlos Delgado and YES, YES, YES I was wrong but can he sustain this production for the next two months that’s the question.
How can you not like Billy Wags after his quote yesterday when asked if he was worried facing Jimmy Rollins in the 9th inning yesterday:
“Not really, I mean it’s Jimmy Rollins-not Barry Bonds”
Yeah it’s on mo’ fo’s it’ on!!!!
Speaking of celebrations I was ready to see D-Wright turn to the Phillies dugout and give a double middle finger salute, I have never seen Wright as fired up as he was yesterday and although no one on the team will say it, it seems Willie Randolph did all he could to suppress his players from showing emotion and doing things the Highlander Way (see how that worked out <eyeroll>) where as Warlord Jerry wants his team to be emotional. Yes I love being hated like this and I like that the team is shedding it’s scardy cat imagine I just hope it’s the real Mets and not as Springsteen says a “Brilliant Disguise”.
I’m sitting on the Staten Island Ferry this morning crossing the Lower New York Bay reading my Daily News when I turn to page 74 and I screamed out YYYYYYIIIIIKKKKKKEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!! There was a picture of Petey’s late father lying in his coffin. Stay classy Daily News
Lost in all the hoopla of the Mets regaining first place is Oliver Perez making another quality start. OP had an ERA of 5.70 on 6/24 and now has brought that number down to 4.15 as of yesterday. Look at the big shit eatin’ grin on Scott Boras face.

Great read, Steve!
I live in South New Jersey which is 90% Philly phans because i’m a stones throw away from Philly and I have to live with it all year long with the Phils and Eagles. Veterans stadium, at the time, was the only stadium that had a small court room and jail cell INSIDE the stadium and if you started a fight or did something bad, they would try you right there at the park. that is how UNclassy philly fans are - that they needed to put a jail in the stadium itself. Not sure if the Linc has one but I’m sure it does.
I’m so glad the Mets are playing with the same emotion that won them the division in ‘06. I’m sure no one remembers but I called for Willie’s head the day the season ended last year. We’d problaby be in first by 10 games by now if we had done that. Figures now the phils play the braves who just lost Hudson and Chipper Jones. They will sweep them I’m sure

great posts, Steve and Frank.
Despite their comments, the reality is that what irritated those Phillies was not Reyes’ celebratory burst around the bases, cause we have all seen that done many times before and by every team…but rather it was his clutch 3-run homer that upset them, and their sudden realization that they were dropping down to second place. It was the 12 strikeouts and failure to handle Ollie Perez. It was having their MVP arrive late and not start. It was watching Utley and Howard fan three times each, and above all, it was losing yet another series to the Mets, for the fourth time this year, since they entered 2008 thinking they totally had the Mets pysched out after the events of 2007.
The Phillies celebrated loudly on Tuesday after their incredible win, they had their hands up in the air pumping, in our house, but the Mets got the last laugh this week. The Phillies need to re-group, and right now they are very worried about what they are seeing from the Mets.
As for Mazilli, get a life, Lee!

Baseball is full of this stuff these days. I remember when I was first able to get games on t.v. back in 03 after 12 dark years I was shocked by some of the antics. Manny Ramirez is one guy who comes to mind, but it just seemed like everyone liked to stop and admire his work after hitting a long one. That was a total no-no back in the day. And, clearly, the crackdown on “payback” is the reason all of this stuff goes on now.
Funny enough, I don’t care if the Phillies’ and their announcers/fans are griping about Reyes’s HR trot the other night. That’s their birthright - to bellyache. I do have a problem with Mazilli, however. I don’t see him on t.v. so I have no idea what he’s like usually, but you couldn’t be more right about those 86 Mets. All those curtain calls were certainly putting it up to the other team and, well, the Mets were hated and responded well when teams sought “payback”. What’s his problem?

Well put. You’re not the first to bring up the ‘86 Mets as far as this subject goes. Hopefully more and more people will get it. A good team has to have a bit of a swagger. Who gives a good god damn if the opposing coaches or announcers approve?
I swear to Casey Stengal, Reyes’ head has been so fucked up with all this nonsense about his celebrations. Maybe they should be tempered somewhat (something that might come with age) but there’s no reason a failed manager like Mazzilli (as lame a skipper, if not lamer, than Willie) should be so obsessed with it and come down on him like a sledgehammer. I mean what would you rather watch, some exuberance, or Beltran with that bored look on his face?
Face it, in today’s sports age everyone overacts. NBA players go nuts when they just score 1/50 of their teams points for a game. If you want to shut the other team up either throw at their head or simply beat their ass in the game. All the rest is bullshit.

I read after Tuesday night’s game that Rollins after he crossed home plate in the ninth pointed and motioned some crap at the Mets’ dugout, how come no one is bitching about that, only when the Mets do it??? And compared to others Reyes, while he did the hand gesture towards the sky, still motored around the bases pretty quick, he did not take an hour to round the bases.

And Elaine said, “I’ll drop you like a bag of dirt”. What a great episode, what a great show. Ad out side of the NY area, people don’t think the show is/was funny. Says a lot, right?

The difference between the ‘86 Mets and the 2008 Mets is that the ‘86 Mets were so damned good that they could have mooned the other teams dugout after every home run and there would be nothing the other team could do about it because if they threw at the next Mets hitter, the dugout would clear and the Mets would beat them all to a pulp. The ‘86 Mets would sweep this 2008 Mets team in any series and would sweep the pathetic phils also. There is really no comparing the 2 teams. The ‘86 Mets knew they were the cream of the crop and knew they were going to win the world series and the 2008 Mets are just now realizing that they have just enough talent to squeek out a division title in a not so strong NL east. Even now, the ‘86′ers would demoralize the 08′ers.
