The difference between the '86 Mets and the 2008 Mets is that the '86 Mets were so damned good that they could have mooned the other teams dugout after every home run and there would be nothing the other team could do about it because if they threw at the next Mets hitter, the dugout would clear and the Mets would beat them all to a pulp. The '86 Mets would sweep this 2008 Mets team in any series and would sweep the pathetic phils also. There is really no comparing the 2 teams. The '86 Mets knew they were the cream of the crop and knew they were going to win the world series and the 2008 Mets are just now realizing that they have just enough talent to squeek out a division title in a not so strong NL east. Even now, the '86'ers would demoralize the 08'ers.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('86314','Frank from Jersey','The difference between the \'86 Mets and the 2008 Mets is that the \'86 Mets were so damned good that they could have mooned the other teams dugout after every home run and there would be nothing the other team could do about it because if they threw at the next Mets hitter, the dugout would clear and the Mets would beat them all to a pulp.
I read after Tuesday night's game that Rollins after he crossed home plate in the ninth pointed and motioned some crap at the Mets' dugout, how come no one is bitching about that, only when the Mets do it??? And compared to others Reyes, while he did the hand gesture towards the sky, still motored around the bases pretty quick, he did not take an hour to round the bases.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('85614','Paul','I read after Tuesday night\'s game that Rollins after he crossed home plate in the ninth pointed and motioned some crap at the Mets\' dugout, how come no one is bitching about that, only when the Mets do it???
Well put. You're not the first to bring up the '86 Mets as far as this subject goes. Hopefully more and more people will get it. A good team has to have a bit of a swagger. Who gives a good god damn if the opposing coaches or announcers approve?

I swear to Casey Stengal, Reyes' head has been so fucked up with all this nonsense about his celebrations. Maybe they should be tempered somewhat (something that might come with age) but there's no reason a failed manager like Mazzilli (as lame a skipper, if not lamer, than Willie) should be so obsessed with it and come down on him like a sledgehammer. I mean what would you rather watch, some exuberance, or Beltran with that bored look on his face?

Face it, in today's sports age everyone overacts. NBA players go nuts when they just score 1/50 of their teams points for a game. If you want to shut the other team up either throw at their head or simply beat their ass in the game. All the rest is bullshit.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('85392','James Allen','Well put.
Baseball is full of this stuff these days. I remember when I was first able to get games on t.v. back in 03 after 12 dark years I was shocked by some of the antics. Manny Ramirez is one guy who comes to mind, but it just seemed like everyone liked to stop and admire his work after hitting a long one. That was a total no-no back in the day. And, clearly, the crackdown on "payback" is the reason all of this stuff goes on now.

Funny enough, I don't care if the Phillies' and their announcers/fans are griping about Reyes's HR trot the other night. That's their birthright - to bellyache. I do have a problem with Mazilli, however. I don't see him on t.v. so I have no idea what he's like usually, but you couldn't be more right about those 86 Mets. All those curtain calls were certainly putting it up to the other team and, well, the Mets were hated and responded well when teams sought "payback". What's his problem?
Reply - Quote

Great read, Steve!

I live in South New Jersey which is 90% Philly phans because i'm a stones throw away from Philly and I have to live with it all year long with the Phils and Eagles. Veterans stadium, at the time, was the only stadium that had a small court room and jail cell INSIDE the stadium and if you started a fight or did something bad, they would try you right there at the park. that is how UNclassy philly fans are - that they needed to put a jail in the stadium itself. Not sure if the Linc has one but I'm sure it does.

I'm so glad the Mets are playing with the same emotion that won them the division in '06. I'm sure no one remembers but I called for Willie's head the day the season ended last year. We'd problaby be in first by 10 games by now if we had done that. Figures now the phils play the braves who just lost Hudson and Chipper Jones. They will sweep them I'm sure :(
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('85048','Frank from Jersey','Great read, Steve!\r\n\r\nI live in South New Jersey which is 90% Philly phans because i\'m a stones throw away from Philly and I have to live with it all year long with the Phils and Eagles.
