I know this will not make a segment of my audience happy but ESPN is reporting that Omar Minaya will get a 4 year extension of his contract and I say BRAVO to the Skill Sets for this.
I know from reading some of the commentators here that Fire Omar is a battle cry but to me Minaya has done a lot more good than bad and his and First Lt. Bernazard have rebuilt the farm system to wear it is bearing some very sweet fruit. If you want ot blame the collapse and the lack of an reliable bullpen, he wasn’t going to give up young talent and cripple the system to bring in a middle reliever. You build through the farm and patch holes with free agents and trades. You can kill Minaya on the Castillo deal but he has much more check marks in the plus column than the minus as far as I’m concerned.

Agree 100%, Steve. the Omar period has been such a great time for the Mets, nothing but growth, contention, big crowds, many great players, etc. Some people may not remember the true suffering that preceded the Minaya years. No doubt the Castillo deal looks bad for now, but with so many brightly colored feathers already in Omar’s cap, who am I to quibble?
His greatest asset is that he clearly has the confidence, and the money of the Wilpons, in hand.
I guarantee you, the rest of the league WISHES that the Mets had dumped Minaya. They know that he is making the Mets a force each year.
BTW, how about Wright and Reyes? Both at .300, Jose leading the league in hits, Wright second in RBIs, either one could still snatch the MVP award with a huge final week.
J-Gangsta is my Manager of the Year. He has delivered the goods!
I totally agree… people are blind when it comes to Omar sometimes. We have a awful pen, but a great overall team. I’m glad the Daniel Murphys of the world didn’t get shipped out for 2nd rate relief pitchers who will probably stink next year or stink this year.
I’ve never been off the Minaya wagon. You can’t expect every move a GM makes to be perfect but he has definitely done more good than harm. Yes, the Castillo contract still has me scratching my head but then you have to look at trades like getting Maine and Perez also. Also, don’t forget, when the season started, we were touted as having one of the best bullpens. No one expected such declines of people like Heilman and Feliciano. No one expected Wagner to get a season ending injury. In spring training, our bullpen looked solid. You can’t blame Omar for those guys all sucking at the same time when they have had past success. It’s not like these bullpen guys are in their upper 30’s where we would expect decline like this. This is the kind of thing that happens in baseball. Next year, these same guys could put good numbers back up like they did the past couple years and we would have one of the best bullpens again. You never know with baseball! I will say, however, I doubt many of this bullpen crew will be back next year
Are you kidding?
omar minaya is a disaster. this team BLEW UP last year in a disturbing way. they are in danger of choking again this year.
i had about ten paragraphs written but i deleted them all. arguing with ofirmative minaya apologists is like arguing with a barking dog.
this guy is a thuggish, racist failure and leave it to the wilpons, the worst judges of talent and character in mlb, to EXTEND this al sharpton in orange and blue.
on the topic of negotiating – what in the hell is the point of four years? minaya has NO LEVERAGE WHATSOEVER. there is NO OTHER TEAM ON PLANET EARTH that fails to see what an incompetent fraud he is.
no matter to fred and jeff – here comes the checkbook that was whipped out for mo, arty, moises, louis, etc.
the post here today really depresses me. i realize that no met fan rebellion is in the works. the mediocrity and humilation will continue and those who perpetuate it will be rewarded. won’t be seeing you at the new digs next year. i can think of better ways to spend $200 and four hours to watch the afirmative actions cough up a ninth innning lead in a noisy stadium surrounded by chop shops.
Ladies and Gentlemen I have to appoligze for my crazy Uncle Chester as his post
that’s pretty funny
you should apologize for being part of omar’s enablers
you’re part of the problem. you have the wittiest and probably most popular mets blog but your liberal politics blind you to the atrocity of omar. as a result, you do damage to the mets and their fans because you misuse your soapbox. really, look at the record..you are harsh but not harsh enough on the wilpons. you dismiss dissent as all good liberals will.
omay minaya is incompetent. he has a blank checkbook and he can’t find 10 HRs at 2B and .280 and 80 RBIs in LF and RF. i could fill all those spits in two days at the winter meetings.
insert your witty repost here. that’s fine – i know i’m right and i know the mets will always suck unless we met fans send a message to the wilpons, via our wallets, that this level of ineptitude is unacceptable. the dream is that they fire omar. the pipe dream is that they sell to someone who gets it.
