THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX, TO BUILD A BETTER BULLPEN

We all agree that the Mets bullpen has to be demolished and built back up. So before I detonate the TNT and blast it away to oblivion, the following relievers please step forward:

Pedro Feliciano

Brandon Knight

Joe Smith

Please leave to blasting area and enjoy your winter, See you in St. Lonesome in February.

The rest of you. SYA-FUCKING-NARA

Okay, now who do I want Omar to go after? I’m a Brian Fuentes fan and I wouldn’t mind signing him to close but he would be a fall back candidate and we all know Fuentes and K-Rod (his stock is dropping like he was listed on the Dow Jones) will not sign a dotted line until they meet with the Mets. Fuentes had a fine season and would come much cheaper than K-Rod. Fuentes had a WHIP of 1.10 (K-Rod 1.28) and his BB/K were 22/82 in 62 2/3 IP (K-Rod 34/74 BB/K in 68 IP) Fuentes has command of a fastball and slider that would look awfully good in the Mets pen.

The other free agent I’d go after is a no brainer Juan Cruz. Cruz size wise reminds me of former Mets reliever Tom “The Blade” Hall but pitching wise Cruz has exactly what is missing in the Mets pen that has been manned by to slop tossers, a flamethrower.

Another pitcher who would look handsome in Mets Blue and Orange is D-Backs reliever Chad Qualls. Qualls has fabulous size at 6’5 220 lbs and he’s a workhorse. Last year he appeared in 77 games and pitched 73 2/3 innings. His BB/K was a sterling 18/71 with a WHIP of 1.07. Qualls avoided arbitration last year by signing a 1yr/$1.3 mil deal and he could more than that triple that this year. With the D-Backs counting pennies and the Skill Sets shitting $100 bills I’m sure Omar could work his magic in a deal for the much needed Qualls.

Now my SLEEPER pick for this off season would take a deal to get and it might be a bit costly but I would almost (ALMOST) invoke a moratorium of my attacks on the Skill Sets if Omar could acquire Matt Capps from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Capps had 21 saves for the lowly Bucos and in 53 2/3 IP his BB/K mark is 5/39 That’s right FIVE walks in just under 54 IP add to that a WHIP of 0.97 and that Capps is 25 years old and raw boned I would do whatever is necessary to bag Capps. I’d go as far as to find a way to add LHP John Grabow in the deal I’d seriously look at putting F-Mart, Nick Evans and Luis Castillo with a book of blank checks in his pocket from the Skill Sets account   which the Pirates could use to pay Gimp every two weeks You could sweet talk the Bucs into adding a another prospect, you know be creative I’m sure Omar and Neal Huntington can work something out.

I’m happy with the re-sign of Fernando Tatis and I’m sure we could all live with a  Murphy/Tatis LF platoon. The bench needs strengthen and versaliliaty so Omar needs to land either Willie Bloomquist (my choice) Jerry Hairston Jr. or Felipe Lopez to the every man on the bench.

Yes I want a new number catcher and you all know of my crush on Pierzynski but I’ll say this as well; as great as he was in the second half last year I will be disappointed if Carlos Delgado is the opening day first baseman. He proved us all wrong last year but he needs to go. It’s not personnel it’s business. As great as Delgado was I still look at him as a “Me” guy and not a “We” guy and if D-Wright is going to become the leader if this franchise and its face then 2009 is the place to start. It seems that Delgado is the voice in that clubhouse, a clubhouse that gagged two years in a row so if Omar, Tony B, J-Man and Jeffey want to get peoples attention then they need to ship Delgado out pronto.

LINK LETTERS

Thank you Mark Healy for the hat tip from Gotham Baseball.  Heals, echos the feeling that the attituted of the Mets needs a blast from the past.

Yes, Greg Prince, Next Year can not get here soon enough for me either.

I think my head is still swiming from the managerial screw up by both Good O’ Cholly and Joey Specs so read the lay of the mis-managerial land from Beyond the Box Score.

Eddie Kunz is not having a good go of it in the AFL as lefties are whipping his ass and it has me worried

THE NEW YORK METS SLOGAN FOR 2009: BRING THE HATE!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can add any vile and nasty words you want to that slogan as well. If Warlord Jerry and Omar Minaya have any motivational brains they will use the hatred that seems to be universal around baseball to help bond the ‘09 team.

I totally confess to be the world’s biggest sore loser. As much as I hate the NY Islanders I always admired Isles goalie Billy Smith who never joined the hand shake line during the Stanley Cup playoffs as he said “why shake hands with a guy who is trying to take bread off my table”? Well said.

This “We Hate You” mantra that has been vented toward the Mets needs to be embraced by the owner, the GM, the Manager, the fans, and most importantly the players. What all this “hate” tells me is the NL has no respect for the Mets because the see them as a “me” and not a “we” team. J-Man touched on that when he was given the total reigns of the clubhouse and it’s up to him to drive this Bring the Hate message to his players. It’s is up to Omar to bring in players who take offense to being hated. This team of 2008 took the hate in stride. Remember the Elijah Dukes incident with Mike Pelfrey? It was good that Brian Schiender stepped between Dukes and Big Pelf but being that there is a history of disrespect between the Nats and Mets, Schiender should have Varetek-ed Dukes. By Vartek-ed I mean how Jason Vartek smacked the shit out of A-Rod as he was tired of his bullshit. That’s what a team does. Is this neanderthal macho dumb ass thinking?  Of course it is.  But this turn the other cheek bullshit ain’t working in Flushing.

So line up you fucking haters and takes us on. BRING THE HATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HE MAY BE A PHILLIE, BUT I LIKE SCOTT EYRE

Why? as per Deadspin, Eyre was the Phillies pitcher would gave the greatest quote about the Used Car Salesman and his Commissionership when asked about Bud and the postponement of Game 5:

{“That fucking guy (Selig) I wouldn’t let him supervise one of my shits”}

Classic fucking line

By the way check out the link at the bottom of that Deadspin post  of one nasty t shirt. If I see this guy in NYC I will slice his balls off

OMAR LOOKING AT BENGI MOLINA

It’s safe to say, that Omar Minaya is not enamored with the play of Brian Schneider and as well he shouldn’t. It’s not so much his offense as the front office knew that Schneider was not much of a batsman but his defense to me and most likely to the Mets brain trust was not as advertised. Schneider came to the team with a good glove rep and as an a good pitch caller but those attributes were not on display much last season. Schneider had nagging injuries but to me he looked a little lazy with the glove and his pitchers (especially Petey) shook over his signals a lot of times in big spots.

On Metsblog there is a link to the SI story but read the comments section and where they are on to something where if Omar could land both Molina and Aaron Rowand that would be a major coup

CONCLUSION OF WORLD SERIES GAME 5 TONIGHT: DOES ANYONE CARE?

I’ll watch it and you may watch as well but really other than Phillies fans and Rays fans does anyone care about the World Series anymore? Has MLB under the bumbling Used Car Salesman and the worst television network on earth FOX destroyed what was once the crown jewel of  American sports?

Forget about whether kids are watching or care about the Series an unscientific poll of my 13 year old and his friends will tell you they not only haven’t watched a single pitch they are more concerned about their up coming basketball season and the Friday Halloween Dance. It’s not that they are not baseball fans as out of 15 boys in my sons class 12 play organized baseball and they are all die-hard Mets or Highlander fans but when you have homework and practice for whatever sport is in season but the time 8:45 or 9:00pm rolls around your looking at some serious sleep time.

I not a big fan of Bob Raisman but he did lay out today in the NY Daily News all that is wrong with MLB taking Rupert Murdoch’s billions and selling it s soul to FOX. There is no reason in the world that the World Series shouldn’t begin at 7:30pm East Coast Time. First off, no network should put on a pre game show for any sport. In this day and age by the time first pitch, kick off, tip off or face off comes around fans are well versed in what’s in store for that nights game. Do you think I rely on Jeanie Zelasko for my baseball information HA! HA!

It not just kids who are not following the World Series it’s adults as well. Every morning when I come in to work my co-workers ask me who won and what were the highlights as out six or seven guys that want to know none of them have watched one pitch of this series. Most of it is no Mets or Highlanders but even without the locals in it they all tell me the same thing, the game is on too late and they’re not staying up until midnight to watch it.

You would have to think that someone in MLB has to have at least a sliver of common sense and is reading and listening to the fans (have you heard  anyone say the y LIKE the late starts and early morning finishes of these games? I didn’t think so) and bring it to the attention of the Used Car Salesman. If the Mets were to announce that all night home games were going to start at 8:45 PM how many games would you go to? Figure three hours minimum for a game so you’d get out of the ball park at quarter to midnight, then by the time you get out the parking lot and home you would have enough time to take a nap and go to work  so of course the Mets or any team would not be stupid enough to schedule games at that time but for the championship of MLB they do and then wonder why no one is watching.

WOW IT’S A GOOD THING NO ONE IS WATCHING THIS WORLD SERIES

Just add another chapter in the Used Car Salesman’s Rein (Rain?) of Error. I was ready to give Not my Bud, the benefit of the doubt when he came on TV and said the weather forecasters told him their would be just 1/10th of an inch of rain last night and of course there was enough rain that there were pairs of animals qued up in the right field corner of CBP. But then I read Philly Phats column today and he blew the Used Car Salesman’s beard:

{Phillies fan and climatologist extraordinary Joe Bastardi had fired off an angry 6:30 p.m. update to his blog on AccuWeather’s professional site under the headline: “Cancel the Game Tonight.”

Bastardi wrote there was no way in hell or Sea World the rain would let up. Indeed, a rapidly developing coastal storm off the Mid-Atlantic States had slowed the progress of a massive upper low funneling cold air across the Great Lakes. Result: The worst weather fiasco in World Series history and another stain on the boobs who run the cash-obsessed national pastime.

Bastardi’s take: “Cancel the game tonight, and even tomorrow, and then play this when it’s warmer, less windy and there is not precip in the air. It’s the World Series, for goodness sakes . . . “}

All wisecracks aside, MLB and Buddy S. would have had more than explaining cold fronts and rain squalls if B J Upton had broken his ankle sliding in the muck of a baseline between 1st and 2nd base, if you look at the replay, his lead leg just about made it to the base but he stopped awkwardly into the base. When you see puddles on the infield to me that would constitute unplayable conditions right? But this umpiring crew has been an embarrassment the whole series with no leadership and loads of incompetence just like the executive branch of MLB.

Can someone get FOX’s Chris Myers as baseball rule book? When Myers interviewed Bob DuPay about the options on continuing play, DuPay said if the rain continues as they think it will, the game would be suspended. Myers then said, “You mean you will replay the game”? DuPay, smirked and said “no, it will be picked up right where we left off” Stunning.

I figure right around Christmas, Carlos Pena will be getting a beautiful gift basket sent to his house as a token of Commissioner Inept’s appreciation for the game tying base hit.

WELL I CAN TELL BY YOUR GAME, YOU’RE GONNA START A FLAME, LOVE BABY LOVE I’M NOT GONNA CHOKE FROM THE SMOKE GOT ME TIGHTENIN’ UP MY STROKE DO YOU FEEL IT GIRL YEAH

Odds are that tonight will be the finale of the 2008  baseball season as Cole Hamels should make quick work  of the Famous Rays who were losers as soon the pulled in to Cheesesteak City wearing  those baseball caps for pussies as so there little ears wouldn’t get frost bit in the fridged 55 degrees temps. Just like their football cousins the Famous Rays can’t take the mild.

Seems the gas lines in the Philadelphia area and long from Camden NJ to Central City as Phillie fans fill up their empty beer bottles and concoct their celebratory Molotov Cocktails in preparation of burning down the city in honor of the Phillies World Series Championship. Let’s play a little guessing game, how many cars will be destroyed by fire in the CBP parking lot tonight? I’ll say 10. How many fans will suffer gunshot wounds? I’ll say 6. How many arrests altogether following the game will the Philly PD make? Put me down for 150. Or will the settle for just a good old fashion subway beat down?

Dan Graziano has a good “keep the core” column on the Mets and what they need to build around “the Core”

Bill Madden with the lowdown on Jake Peavey and the Florida Marlins closeout sale. You’d have to think that Kevin Gregg is on Omar’s winter shopping list.

Get your popcorn ready Icelander fans; the Broadway Blueshirts are coming to the Mausoleum tonight. I love seeing all those Ranger sweaters in the front row seats behind the Icelander bench.

Check out this video I found via the outstanding Uni Watch site, it’s a 1965 Mets highlight film and I use the word “highlight” very loosely as that 65 Mets added to the franchise start of futility by posting a 50-112 record, the fourth straight 100+ losing season. Also that season saw the end of the managerial reign of the Old Perfesser as a broken hip not only ended Casey Stengel’s Mets managerial career but his career in baseball period. Former Giants catcher Wes Westrum took over as manager (Westrum got the job over Yogi Berra who was on the coaching staff and had 9 AB’s that season ). Also on the 1965 roster was the immortal Warren Spahn and Tug McGraw and Ron Swoboda made their big league debuts. Again a tip of the blue and orange Mets cap to Uni Watch for the link.

WHO STAYED UP FOR LAST NIGHT’S GAME 3?

I wanted desperately to go to bed but I was I got to involved in last night’s late night with the Used Car Salesman and now I have to scramble as if it’s  Sunday it must be High School Open House Day as I have to go with my son to two more schools on his list.  So ‘ll be brief. Very sloppy game on both sides with bad base running and errors with the Rays not living up to their rep of top fielders and strong bullpen and the Upton run scored reminded me of little league but the game was compelling and I guess MLB had no choice but to start the game at 10PM but I doubt to many people stayed up for the end unless they were coming home from a night of partying.

Saw this today that the Fish are looking to deal Kevin Gregg and though tif not a closer for the Mets a great 8th inning guy and the Mets and Fish have worked deals before so I’m sure Omar will be dialing Larry Beinfest. Or one would hope
