Steve, great link to the NBA article at ESPN. Scary but thoughtful.

Ravi, it is true that Manny does not fit some of Omar's probable goals... get younger, get faster, healthier, less expensive, try to develop the players in the Club's minor league system...

And the Holliday-Beltran-FMart outfield might be on his mind...sounds pretty good to me too.

But he and Manny have been crab-walking for years, measuriing each other, making little feints, they are both Dominican New Yorkers, and I really did think that this year it was going to happen...and the Mets would have become immediate favorites to win the NL East and go deep in the play-offs.

I blame Bernie Madoff. When the owner loses his pile, and the economy is STILL in freefall, it must suck away away the cockiness that it takes to toss around another $60 million for three years, even to get Manny Ramirez.

Our team scored as many runs as anyone last year, and our pitching will be much improved in 2009...let's get this thing started!!
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('139533','David in Manhattan','Steve, great link to the NBA article at ESPN.
Meh on Manny...Obviously he would have been a nice fit on this team, but Omar has worked on getting younger, and Manny kinda goes against the grain on that one. If you ask me, I think part of the anti-Manny thinking was that bringing in Manny in '09 precludes the team from going after Matt Holliday after the season, considering the dollars involved, and the lack of positions, especially when you factor in young prospects like FMart...I can see their 2010 outfield being Holliday, Beltran, FMart from left to right.

I think you are overstating the money situation. We as fans have no idea whether the cap the team put on the payroll was to in fact keep the salary under the lux. tax, as they have done over the past few years, or because of Madoff.

Further more, I don't understand why people can't accept the notion that the reason the Mets did not pursue Manny was simply a baseball decision?
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('139392','Ravi','Meh on Manny...Obviously he would have been a nice fit on this team, but Omar has worked on getting younger, and Manny kinda goes against the grain on that one.
