I have had the pleasure of meeting both Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry and both are delightful guys. Even with all the troubles they have had in their personnel lives, they are still embraced by Mets fans and they have both found renewed love for the franchise and it’s fans. A Doc Gooden start at Shea was a happening, a festival a celebration of Mets baseball that has not been matched since. The sight of Darryl Strawberry whipping that bat and hitting tape measure home runs reminds us of when the Mets were the toast of the town and I am so happy that both guys have come home again and have nuzzled in the Mets family bosoms but with all that I’m not ready to retire their numbers.

 

I agree 100 % that management needs to embrace its past more and the one knock I’ve heard about $iti Field is the lack of a presence of Mets history. I’m still waiting to here what the plans are the 40^th Anniversary of one of the most famous teams in baseball history winning the World Series (and why no patch on the uni top sleeve for this anniversary?) . Not just that, in this the first season of $iti why couldn’t management bring back the old fan favorites like Banner Day or an Old Timers Day (I still like my idea of brining back every player who ever played for the Mets for the opening day ceremony to start a new era in Mets history and passing of the torch if you will)

 

Maybe someday the Skill Sets will re-connect with its fan base a fan base that is true Orange and Blue and gives way more to the organization than it ever gets in return.

Thoughts on last nights painful 9-7 win:

 

You know how I know I love the Mets? I sat through every excruciating pitch of last night’s game. Thank God for Gary, Keith and Ron as they kept us informed and entertained in a four hour root canal of a game, especially Gary coming up with the story of the Rodney Dangerfield day after opening promotion. That’s back in the day when the Mets marketing staff was imaginative.

 

Big Pelf looked real uncomfortable on the mound, I mean he had that underwear up the crack of your butt look, as he worked soooooooo slow and kept licking his hand. All that stretchimg of his arm and licking of the fingers couldn’t help him gain command of his sinking fastball in the strike zone. But you have to be encouraged that Pelf had nothing in the first inning but either with adjustments by Old School Dan Werthen and Brian Schneider (wow love for Schneider, you know it’s a new year around here) or just that that his hands warmed up to get a better grip on the ball, Pelfrey went on to give the Mets 4 solid innings and saved J-Man going to the pen early.

 

You know you’re in for a rough night when Angel Hernandez is the home plate ump. Sucking would be an improvement for Hernandez who has no clue of how to call balls and strikes. The man is an embarrassment.

 

Is it too early to talk contract extension for Carlos Delgado? Forget the monster HR in the top of 1 the hit of the night was his base hit to LF (going the other way is a beautiful thing) in the 7^th

 

The bottom of the 5th had to give J-Man a few more gray hairs as Pelf was going along strong and steady until Jay Bruce singled and moved Joey Votto to 3^rd with 2 outs and Pelf hitting that magic 100 pitch mark. Manuel made his decision to let Plefrey go after Edwin Encarnarcion. It showed the confidence that Manuel has in Pelfrey and a reward for overcoming a bad first inning and try to get him on the plus side of decision. Plef got out of the inning with the last play in the world you’d think would ever work the fake to third and throw to first that Castillo grabbed and threw home to nail Votto.

 

Why didn’t the Reds bring in a lefty (Danny Herrera or 87 year old Arthur Lee Rhodes) to pitch to Schneider with the bases loaded and one out? Oh yeah I forgot, Dusty Baker is the Reds manager <doh!>

 

Bill Welke blew that call in the 9^th as Delgado looked to be on the bag making a difficult outing for Frankie Rodriguez even tougher. As bad as Welke is he doesn’t suck as bad as Angel Hernandez.

Due to a rap concert after the game Saturday, the Marlins decided for some reason to start that nights game at 6PM instead of 7PM why? Beats the shit out of me as I’m sure the Gang Bangers that want to hear Flo-Rida rap out “LOW” (luv them Apple Bottom Jeans girlfriend) don’t mind staying up a little later on a Saturday night so if I’m going rip anyone a new asshole over this it’s has to be the Florida Marlins  and that little stooge David Samson.

I won’t let the Skill Sets off easy either as they should be using their muscle in getting the Used Car Salesman to force the Fish into changing the time of the game.

I’d kill FOX but that’s a lost cause as any company that thinks having Doofus Joe Buck and Tim Mc Fullofshit as it’s lead team is beyond help

You know what makes this even worse, and you all know I’m right, this would never ever happen to the team in the Bronx. I’m no fan of the Bronx Robber Baron but he would have put a foot up someones ass over this.

Here’s one for the time capsule kids, during the opening night at CBP while the Phillies were raising what I think is a championship flag (it just a red flag that has 2008 on it) a fight breaks out between  a young South Philly wanna-be and some middle aged Phillies fan. While this is going on some drunken fan tries to video tape the flag raising and well, let the video tell the story.

But first a WARNING: If you have to pee do it now and do not drink anything while watching this. This sums up my one dumb phuck that are Phillie fans. You may click here!

You have a World Series ring, a multi-million dollar condo and hot blond wife what else could Cole Hamels want in life? Why a little African kid that’s what.  Not to be out done by Brad and Angelina or Alex Rodriguez’ stray piece of saggy ass,  Cole and Hedi Hamels want their own little Ethiopian orphan too.

At first Hedi wanted to adopt Shane Victorino but Victorino insisted on being breast feed. Then she thought about Ryan Howard but trying to find a diapers for him,  well com’on.  Cole Hamels felt a bit uncomfortable with Jimmy Rollins begging to be the baby to Hedi being the babby’s momma so it’s off the Africa to find a newborn.

Hey some guys use their World Series check to buy a Porsche some guys buy African babies.

The only thing better than the Mets winning on opening day is winning on opening day when the next day is an off day as my pals who are Highlander supporters are all walking around aimlessly muttering “What the fuck, what the fuck” after going 0-1 <dancing like Michael Flatley>

 

I am calling for an all out boycott of FOX Game of the Week this Saturday and every Saturday the Mets are not a participant if they black out the Mets-Marlins game in NYC. The biggest problem he is the dipshit Marlins management starting the game at 6PM due to a concert that’s schedule for after the game. Be that as it may, this black out rule is total bullshit and even though FOX has a contract with MLB and has this exclusive window, it would be nice if the Used Car Salesman would step up and come to the aid of the one franchise that walks lock step with every edict handed down from his office and get FOX to lift the ban in NYC. The game is not scheduled to be televised in South Florida (let that roll around in your head for moment a local baseball game not televised. Yeah I’m stupefied too) but I guess all five Marlins fans don’t care but not us Mets fans as I’m ready to take hostages if I miss an hour of Saturday’ game.

 

Good post by The Mets Police on the Mets management dropping the ball (which they do as well as the ’62 team) in not putting more historic markings in the parking lot that was once Shea Stadium.

 

Tim Marchman (one of my fav writers and I do miss the NY Sun sports page) has a great column on WSJ on the cutting back of sports coverage in newspapers. In cities like Pittsburgh the Post-Gazette may not even send a beat guy on the road to follow the Pirates and even the Old Grey Lady is cutting back on-site reporting. Marchman points out how bloggers and other web based writers have really taken over in covering games either being at the games or just covering them from TV but are able to file a story or opinion as soon as the game is over. It is stunning to guy of my generation who had to wait to get the NY Post when it was an afternoon only paper, to read about games on the West Coast, now I can read those stories with my Cheerios, first thing in the AM.

 

Quick observations on yesterday’s game:

 

I was nervous in the first inning as Johan had trouble with command but he adjusts brilliantly after that to pitch a gem.

 

Yes, The Gangsta’ left a ton of guys on base but please come off the ledge and stop with the “here we go again” lament at least until the end of this series 

 

Highlander fans won’t tell you to your face but they love our Daniel Murphy because he reminds them of Don Mattingly and it kills them that they have Douche Bag Rodriguez and we have not only D-Wright but Danny Baseball.

 

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE I’m beeeggggggggggggginnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg you NO MORE BLACK UNIFORMS!!!!!!! And ditch those two-tone hats!!!!!!! Mex and Ronnie hit it out of the park, the Mets gray roadie is CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!

I’m still trying to figure how the Gary Sheffield signing is this catastrophic moment in Mets history? Sheffield is not coming in here and bogarting a spot in the line up he has to earn it and the one guy who is impacted by Sheffield being here is Ryan Church  not Dan Murphy (we covered this already I know)  No one shakes their head at the Mets moves more than me but I can’t even fathom Omar Minaya promising anything to Sheffield other than an opportunity to show he can still play. If he can’t then he’s gone, it’s that simple.

 

A major tip of the Mets Cap to The Mets Police, for this link to this story on Jerry Koosman and how the Mets started the five man pitching rotation under Rube Walker. The wildest thing about seeing this story about Koos was I was thinking of Koosman last night last night I was watching MLBN and there were previewing the SF Giants and how the Giants are one of the team in baseball that does not forget it’s former players or it’s franchises history. They put up a graphic that showed Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda and Felipe Alou as former Giants who still work for the organization and who are around the current Giants all through spring training and at times during the season. This has been one of my major gripes with Mets management. Even though it’s nice that Sandy Koufax comes to St. Lonesome every spring to talk to the pitchers it would be even better if Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman were there as spring instructors. Same thing with guys like Jerry Grote, Rusty Stub, and Felix Milan. Management is starting to embrace the old Mets some by of course having them in the TV booth (why isn’t there an analyst in the radio booth? Let Howie do the play by play and have John Franco do color commentary? I’m sorry Wayne Hagin does nothing for me. Besides he talks funny) My hope for opening day at $ti Field is that the pre game festivities would include as many former Mets the team could find and have them walk on to the field from the outfield gates and greet the current team.

 

As far as prediction for the season go let me do it this way:

 

The NL East will be a four team race to start with the Nats looking up at the pack but they will be pains in the ass’s all season. I’m as concerned with the Braves as I am with the Phillies in fact I hope the Phucking Phillis keep up this “look at us we’re beautiful” bullshit celebration of winning the World Series going. Better put the party hats away assholes.

 

The NL Central is the Cubs, Cards, Brewers and maybe the Reds. The Astros and Pirates are there to get fat on.

 

The consensus in the NL West is that the Dodger and D’Backs will fight it out but DO NOT OVERLOOK THE SF GIANTS. Every year I try to find a team I like to follow as I feel they’re taken for granted and the Giants are that team for me this year

 

What makes the AL East so much fun is the Highlanders could win 90 games and not make the post season and yes that’s what I’m rooting for. I still can’t understand why the Tampa Rays get no respect THEY’RE NOT GOING AWAY FOLKS!!!!!! Add in the Old Town Team and this is the best division in baseball. Sorry Jays and O’s fans

 

The AL Central is the most competitive division in baseball and any one of the teams here can win the division title, yes even the Royals and Tigers.

 

The weakest division in the game is the AL West only the Mariners are on the outside looking in as far as a division crown goes.

 

Mets Grrl is in Cincy for opening day and has pics and stories from the town that takes opening day seriously
