I’m amazed how much some folks have their balls in an uproar over Gary Sheffield joining the team. Some are worried about team chemistry, how did that chemistry hold up the last two seasons? This team needs a bad ass even if it’s an over the hill one. The chemistry issued should be moot now that it’s known Sheff signed here because the “face of the franchise”, D-Wright called him and said that the Mets were the team for him.
What are you all afraid of? If Sheffield falls on his face he’ll be gone by the All Star break, if he produces, guess what? Your favorite team just might win the NL East
For all of you concerned with the psyche of Ryan Church think about this. Maybe Church needs a kick in the ass to get motivated. No, I’m not drunk, think about it. In spring training J-Man said the Dan Murphy was a better hitter and that Fernando Tatis would be Church’s partner in RF an now they bring in Sheffield as a way to put a carrot in front of Church to produce. I guess we won’t read about this from the scribes who have access to the team on a daily basis as they are too busy stuffing their faces at the Shake Shack concession at $iti.
Which brings me to Ollie Perez and it’s good thing it was cold and shity and $iti since most fans were busy trying eat their way from left field to right. You know what the season didn‘t start yet but I’m already fed up with how good he food is at $iti Field if it’s a choice of great food or a championship baseball team, I’ll eat a fucking bowl of Alpo okay!
Perez had no feel for the ball today he claimed as he not only lacked command but a clue as well but then again that’s Ollie Being Ollie.

When the Mets unveiled the model of $iti Field not only did the envision a state of the art ball park but they also were of the belief that there would be so much money flowing through it’s coffers Freddie Skill Set could afford to buy Jeffey a personality but lo and behold the economy tanked and Bernie Madoff ripped off the Skill Sets fortune leaving the club not exactly swimming in currency. As opening day approches what we thought was a tough ticket, the first game at $iti Field, are as plentiful as the AM/NY give away newspapers at a Subway station. So what’s a team to do?
Well, first you try and bribe the fan base by offering a ticket to game 1 of the $iti Field era for the purchase of 5 more games. This is head spinning because the Mets wanted to be rid of us Seven-Pack ticket buyers as we were a nussience as it wasn’t worth the time and trouble to keep us on because the ticket demand at $iti would be off the charts. Well for the cheaper seats they were but the high rollers who wouldn’t know a curve ball from a High Ball are now hurtin’ for certain in this weak economy.
So becasue of that the Mets are now auctioning off opening day tickets in the exclusive Stuff Shirt section of the ball park so if you have an extra $525 laying around the couch cushions log on and put your bid in or better yet keep that cushion cash, order a pizza and watch the game on TV.

I have banged my head against the laptop trying to figure out why in the name of George Weiss, Omar Minaya would sign Gary Sheffield. When I first saw this story and said in my best John McEnroe voice “You cannot be serious I thought the Mets were done with signing old guys who were finished. But then you say he’s right handed and he’s cheap but then again he has the rep of being a malcontent but it seems he wants to play for the Mets but still is that enough for Omar to bring Sheffield on board?
I want to scream HELL NO!!!! but I’ll tell you the truth this bringing Sheffield to the Mets is a no loose proposition.
They would have to pay him just $400K as he will be drawing $14 mil from the Tigers, it adds a sorely needed right hand bat to the lineup and he knows this is the last round-up, fuck up here and you’re done and it rids the Mets of Marlon Anderson.
The only real drawback that I can see is in the field where the 40 year old Sheffield is a liability, but he has to know he would come here not as an everyday player but a platoon/righty bat off the bench guy.
The guy who is impacted by this move is Ryan Church as he would platoon with Sheff in RF. No way Daniel Murphy suffers here  as he is now†Plays Daily Danny†so as far as Church’s feelings a concerned, suck it up son this is the big leagues.
So if Omar wants to bring Sheffield in and work a platoon in RF I vote Yea.
It’s amazing how clear things are after a head banging session. Â

I love nothing better than going to a sporting event. I don’t just go to games; I always keep score at baseball games. I love to keep track of line changes at hockey games. I keep track of the time and score at basketball games when the starters come out and the bench guys come in.
Â
When I go to any sporting event I get there hours before the start as I love watching warm ups. There is nothing better than watching batting practice. My family can’t understand this how I can sit in ballpark and watch guys hit a baseball and field fly balls. There are still the few die hards that line up at ball parks and arenas like me for the gates to open but I think these days it’s becoming a lost art.
Â
My wife was stunned this past winter when I turned down tickets to see the New York Football Giants play the Iggles at the Medowlands. I turned it down because I weighed the pros and cons and the cons won. The pros were a day with friends, watching my favorite football team in person, getting a better idea of various formations on offense and defense and having a general good time. The cons, it’s cold, too much down time with game stoppage and TV timeouts, and sitting in insufferable traffic. Then when you add in at home you have your own HDTV, no lines for the bathroom, attendants (children) and a big comfy chair when you think about it you have be nuts to go to the game.
Â
I bring this up because I saw to day that STUBHUB has a ton of tickets on it’s site for the exhibition games this weekend between the Mets and Red Sox. The strange thing is these games SOLD OUT in 45 minutes or so we were told. It looks like the bulk of the tickets went to the secondary market, you know the new business that used to be called scalpers.
Â
It will be a trend to watch this season with both the Mets and Highlanders to see if fans after their first trip to the new ballparks get that “been there, done that feeling†and pass up paying big money to go to a game to spend big money.
Â
When you think about it for what you pay for tickets to a game plus food, souviners and other incidentals (it’s always those damn incidentals that will get you) and gas and tolls is it worth it? With the state of the economy, if you are fortunate enough to have discretionary funds put aside do you spend it on a day at the old ball game or a weekend at the shore?       Â

We can’t predict exactly how the Mets will fare in the field this season (I really, really want to go to a parade in October) but one thing is for sure, we lemmings of $iti Field will be well fed, in fact they may need to open a CRUNCH Gym in the Iron Triangle.
Â
After reading Lawrence Weibman’s NYC Food Guy blog and his $iti Field food preview I have to say those roomier seats will not be a luxury but a necessity.
Â
Just looking at the wonderful pictured that Lawrence posted had me drooling especially the Grandma Pie, I love Grandma pizza which is a Sicilian pie made thin with fresh mozzarella (pronounced mutz-a-rell ) tomato sauce and basil.
Â
I’m glad that Mama’s of Corona still has a presence at $iti and on my first game to $iti my biggest decision will be to have either the Turkey with mozzarella on a semolina roll or hit the Shake Shack for a burger. There was a time where I’d hit eat both then grab a pizza wash it down with about 6 Bud’s and stop at the Lemon Ice King on the way home. Those days are looooooooooooooooooooooong gong. In fact after going to $tit I may not eat for a week so as not to spoil my boyish figure.
Â
Check out Lawrence site for all the food options at $iti Field as he gives us Mets fans a great gastric game plan.     Â

The Phil-A-Nista’s are dozing off after scarfing down  a bunch of soft pretzels with mustard and a case of Schmidts. I don’t know what was worse the stench of cooking scrapple or watching ROCKY movies all day but just as I was about to tell them to shoot me the BLUE and ORANGE phone rang and it was my man Tony Bernazard.
I don’t what Tony B said to them but the lead Phil-A-Nista I believe lost control of his bowels and his second in command pissed his pants and the rest of this rag tag bunch just laid down their arms and pleaded with me for forgiveness.
They have agreed to leave in the morning when the next Amtrak train leaves for DumpadelphiaÂ
So now I have them tied up and subject to this on a continuous loop
The site should be back to normal tomorrow thanks to my man Tony B Â and the Brenazard Liberation Army.

The Phil-A-Nista’s just let me talk to Uncle Saul (I could hear Jeffey giggling in the background) and he said he was trying his best to get these thugs from Philly to leave my headquarters but no way could they give in to the demands. Uncle Saul said Iwas lucky that he likes me (the Brooklyn connection is huge) and that Freddie is such a mench that he actually feels bad or me so they will try to do the best they can in ending my time in captivity.
I tried to whisper into the phone to Uncle Saul to call Tony B and tell him I’m in trouble. It’s my only hope.

While the Phil-A-Nista’s are busy (thank God I had some old VHS ofThe Mike Douglas Show) They are still waiting for Jeffy Skill Sets to call back. I heard them say he laughed at them about the demand and muttered something that sounded like “good for that asshole” but he said he’d speak to his Uncle Saul who is a big fan of mine (thank you Uncle Saul Katz!) What the fuck is that smell? Oh dear God they’re cooking scrapple.
