THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIEND, WE THOUGHT THEY’D NEVER END

I don’t know about you but I had a very strange feeling watching the 4thinning of last nights Mets-Braves game. Here were the Mets putting an ass whipping on Derek Lowe and the hated Atlanta Braves and I should have been doing the Snoopy dance but it had no real big effect on me.  Sure, it was a pleasure watching hit after hit (although I shook my head as Daniel Murphy made two of the three outs in the inning) but instead of being thrilled at the site of pinstriped Mets (have you noticed it has been a while since the Mets have worn the funeral black shirts? Has someone threaten Charlie Samuels with an ass kicking if they see black again? I sure hope so) crossing home plate eight times. I was more stunned that this expansion like lineup was even competitive.

A few years ago, Braves-Mets at Flushing would be a night of passion, now, eh I didn’t even want a cigarette when the inning ended.

Please, please Bobby Ojeda stop I’m begging you TO STOP with the happy horseshit recaps after games. Stop acting like the Mets should be given some Medal of Honor for playing hard and trying to compete. All you are doing is embarrassing yourself by drinking the Skill Sets Kool-Aid. I know you desperately want to be the team pitching coach but don’t lower yourself to be a court jester.

Soon to be GM of the Mets, John Ricco is accompanying Jeffey Skill Sets on his tour of the farm system. The last stop was in Bingo and Matt Cerrone has a link to a storywhere Ricco talks of the big teams injuries effecting the farmers. If I’m Omar I’d take my dry cleaning to a one-hour martinizer.

The Los Angles Angels Who Really Play in Anaheim had NINE .300 or better hitters in their lineup last night. Oh yeah, I’m on that Angels bandwagon baby!!!!!

ENJOY IT, SUMMER DOESN’T LAST FOREVER

I must admit, I didn’t watch much of the Mets-Giants game last night and from the looks of things I didn’t miss much. One thing I did notice and I kind of noticed this on Saturday, $iti Field is not exactly packed and jammed.

Remember back when the plans for $iti came out and it was announced that the seating capacity would be about 15,000 less than Shea and the outcry that fans would be shut out of games? Now there are tickets a plenty even in the beginning of the season the secondary markets were awash in Mets tickets. I’ve been to 10 games so far this season and I plan on going to at least 5 more. Sure it bothers me that the team is awful but what bothers me even more is winter. As bad as the Mets are right now, just think what it’s like in the middle of January with the snow, wind and cold and you have to wear three layers of clothes and a coat, hat and gloves. I can’t get enough days at the ball park to suit me. Besides the way the team is constructed right now, it has a nostalgic feel to going to a Mets game, very 1975-ish.

Is there a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel? First, the team started to listen to the fan base and has made improvements to $iti Field. The video screen in the RF corner came in handy on Saturday and the montage of Gooden, Straw and Hernandez looked great along with the banners on the outfield wall and even the cow in the promenade was cute. The place had a Mets feel to it, finally.

Then there were the Throwback uni’s paying tribute to the our NL heritage that the Skill Sets are finally embracing and maybe, just maybe the organization is realizing that blue and orange are our colors and the uniform we all grew up with is what we want. I’ll go out on a limb here and say that after this season the dreaded black uniforms will be no more.

But last night was the topper in this starting to feel better about my team. The Skill Sets actually went over slot money to sign their top draft pick RHP Steven Matz, by close to 400K. Now we’re talking here, let me give Jeffey and Freddy an ‘Atta Boy for that. See it’s not hard fellas.

Let me send out my hopes for a speedy recovery to Alex Cora who is having both thumbs operated on and is down for the season. The Mets should have let Cora take one more at bat so the fans could give him the ovation he deserves. Cora should have had his thumb surgery back in June but put it off due to the dearth of infielders to step up and play. Alex Cora is a gamer.

To fill Cora’s spot on the roster the Mets have resigned Teddy Martinez

At this point in the season, it isn’t really worth getting worked up over, but enough of Livan Hernandez already.

The Mets fan version of the Weather Underground will meet again a week from tonight at Two Boots Tavern 384 Grand St on the glorious Lower East Side. Come one come all we all need the therapy.

Highlander fans are starting to bloom in all their glorious doucheness over their teams recent run of good fortune. As I stated to my colleague who sits next to me at work, you can break balls all you want right now Highlander fans, but keep this in the back of your small minds, if you want to belittle the Mets and Mets fans and stick out your chests and walk around like it’s a foregone conclusion that World Series title 27 will come this late October you better hope it does, because if your Bronx Bastards fall short this post season. I WILL MAKE YOUR LIVES A LIVING HELL!!!!! Believe me it is very tough for me to hold my tongue when I wear my Mets shirts, shorts, cap, watch, and sling bag and get a bunch of shit from Highlander fans so you know I’m just waiting to attack and when I do it won’t be pretty. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Memo to Adam “The Bull”

You can kill the Mets all you want but remember your place at WFAN, you’re a benchwarmer . Come September you’ll be back in your proper place taking phone calls from Jerome in Manhattan at 2 AM.

WRIGHT’S HEAD GAMES, EVIL JERRY, AND TWEAKING THE THROWBACKS

Here is how fucked up the Mets front office is, they are being praised for putting David Wright on the 15 day DL. That’s like praising someone for not driving through a red light or yelling FIRE!!! in a movie theatre. How is this hard choice? Sure Omar claims that Wright wanted to go day to day then see if he could come back but like my kids wanting Pop Tarts with a side of M & M’s and gummy bears for dinner, someone has to be the adult and say NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe Minaya has finally put his “man” pants on? Maybe it’s too late?

Jerry Manuel is a man who never uses profanity but he still is a nasty fuck sometimes as we see with his quotes about Ryan Church and how finally the truth is coming to light on why he was not a fan of Church:

Whether the Mets learned to be cautious with concussions as a result of Church’s case remains to be seen. Jerry Manuel appeared to question Church’s toughness yesterday, at least relative to Wright’s grit.

“David is a different animal, so to speak,” Manuel said. “And how he is made up is a little different than, say, Ryan Church, in my opinion. And that’s not to say one is better than the other. But they’re different.”

So Manuel feels Church was a big pussy, now we see it. That’s why I always liked Billy Martin, he was man enough to call his players a pussy to their face (sure after a few scotches) I will say I am kind of surprised that Manuel would question a player like Church’ intestinal fortitude, especially when everyone from doctors, fans and people around baseball all agree that the Mets botched up Church’s head injuries big time.

Jeff Francouer did a Q & A with the Atlanta Journal Constitution on how he is loving life in NY and $tit Field.

Great stuff from Mets Geek on the unsigned Mets draft picks.

After seeing those throwback uni’s in person Saturday you what, they weren’t that bad. I like the color and I LOVED the MR. Met on the sleeve along with no names on the back, if the NY were smaller it would have been a hit. Mets Police was listening to yesterday’s game on radio like I did (I was on my way to Coney Island to see the Brooklyn Cyclones and eat pizza at Spumoni Gardens. Also it was a day to torture my kids by telling them I’m selling our house and moving back to Brooklyn.  My wife and kids used to laugh when I’d do this but now they’re scared to death that the might see a for sale sign on the front lawn. Truth be told if I could up root my house and place it in Bay Ridge, I’d be back in Brooklyn in a heartbeat) and heard Howie Rose talk about the throwbacks and how the Mets are slowly learning that the fan base wants to see more Mets tradition and to be more like the Highlander, Cardinals, Dodgers, Cubs and Red Sox and just tweek the uniform and not go crazy. As we all know Howie is with us in the Black Uni’s Suck Club. If the Mets were to modify the throwbacks from this weekend to use an orange NY with blue and orange stripes on the sleeves, numbers on the front and back and no names on the back  with blue piping down the pant legs with Mr. Met on one sleeve and the round Mets logo on the other and top that off with blue stirrups and the classic blue caps that would be a world class uniform.

SO, THIS SEASON CAN’T GET WORSE YOU SAY? WELL, IT JUST DID !

My main concern right now is the fact that David Wright has NOT been placed on the DL by the Mets. And not the 15 day one either, put him on the 60 day then have a nurse sent to his Manhattan apartment to monitor him and when he feels and checks out better by a doctor fuel up the Skill Sets yacht (take the for sale sign off and cancel the ad in the Buy Lines Freddy) and sail him to the Caribbean for some much needed R & R and tell him see you in March!

I don’t know what was scarier yesterday, the sight of Wright getting hit in the head and lying motionless on the ground or the fear that his health and safety is in the hands of the most incompetent bunch of fuckers in sports, The Skill Sets!

Can’t you just picture Jeffey Skill Sets visiting Wright in the hospital. “Dave how are ya”? “You know what take Sunday off in fact here’s free pass to Great Adventure go ride the Kingda Ka on me”

A must read this morning is from Metsradamus who correctly points out the softness of the Mets is what has fueled this pitching inside and may have led to Wright getting beaned. I have stated this here before, the word around the league is the Mets are as soft as two-ply Charmin. Pitch inside, dust them off the plate, hell drill ‘em in the ribs, the Mets will turn the other cheeck never a fear of retaliation isn’t near. Turk Wendell Mets fans turn their lonely eyes to you .

But finally FINALLY someone stepped up as Johan Santana there behind Kung Fu Panda (on purpose) and drilled Bengi Mollina (The one Mollina who needs to get drilled is Yadier but that’s another post for another time) Sure the Panda hit it out of the park after hitting the dirt but sometimes you lose a battle to win the war.

Check out Mike Silva’s NYBD and his post on the NY Times story on left handed catchers. He mentions Benny DiSteffano the pride of Bensohurst has the last lefty receiver in the bigs. When I started with the City 25 years ago I worked with DiSteffano’s sister. When he was with the Pirates their Mom, would make a pot of pasta, meatballs and gravy for the Bucos. Chuck Tanner was the manager back then and it was the highlight of his season when the club made the trip to Shea and Mama DiStefano’s home cooked meal. By the way, being a lefty myself I own a left handed catcher mitt.

Oh by the way, my sympathy for Matt Cain ended when he tipped his cap to the crowd as he was booed when he was removed from last night’s game. That was a real asshole move by Cain.

OFF TO $ITI FIELD, I HOPE I RECOGNIZE THE PLACE

Actual pictutes of Mets heros of the past on the wall ? Video boards installed for the fans to better follow the action? Championships duly noted with banners on the wall for all to see? Are these the New York Mets we’re talking about? Amazingly, yes.

I can’t wait to check out the new and improved Mets-centirc $iti Field. I’m still puzzeled by those throwback unis fromlasr night. If they used the Mets inter-locking orange NY in a small version on the left breast with the Mets round logo on one arm with the Mr Met on the other that would be a cool uni.

Bravo to Bobby Parnell for that great start last. If Parnell can finish the season this strong look for John Maine to be late inning reliever in 2010.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH THE SUMMER OF’69………….

I was one miserable little 11 year old back on the weekend of August 16th 1969. I watched all the 20 something’s from my neighborhood pack up and head upstate NY for a music festival and knowing that there wasn’t a shot in hell I could ever go, pissed me off.

It was right around that time I was getting an appreciation for rock music. Sure I saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan when I was six but that didn’t stir me like Woodstock. Right around this time FM radio with it’s free form rock play lists were on the scene and the days of listening to MusicRadio 77 WABC and Cousin Brucie and Top 40 hits, were replaced with Scott Muni and the Night Bird Allison Steele on WNEW-FM  playing full albums by the Rolling Stones, The Kinks and The Doors.

After watching the footage from Max Yasgur’s farm I decided at 11 years old, no more hair cuts, no more listening to the man,  I was going to be the world’s youngest revolutionary. That lasted about three days when my father laid down the law and gave me a real good attitude adjustment.

So here it is 40 years later and I still listen to rock music, I still don’t take orders well and I always question authority. The biggest difference is I get what’s left of my hair buzzed every two weeks. Three out of four ain’t bad!

I wish Ed (Grey Goose) Coleman gave his Mets reports as well as he writes his blog on WFAN. This entry on Easy Ed going to Woodstock is a must read.

The Mets did very well on this weekend back in ’69, sweeping the expansion San Diego Padres in back to back doubleheaders. Seaver, Koosman, Gary Gentry and Don Cardwell got the wins with Koos getting a complete game win and Ron Taylor collecting two saves and young Tug McGraw the other.

Last night on Pro Baseball Central we discussed whether Omar and Jerry Manuel will be back next year and the possibility of the Skill Sets selling a part of the team due to the Madoff fall out. Listen to podcast here by clicking out the icon on top or at our Pro Baseball Central site.

For more of the Skill Sets money woes, checkout the chat that Post beat man Bart Hubbuch conducted yesterday. Get ready for a payroll lower than $100 mil next season.

I can’t understand how Daniel Murphy went from a guy we all rooted for to someone folks are ready to kick to the curb.

John Sickels has a late season update on the Mets top prospects. It seems any one who is worth anything in the system is Latin and 18 years old.

I still have a big problem with Michael Vick not just for the cruelty he committed on those dogs but also in my opinion before this I felt he was very overrated. I don’t get all the hoopla over where he will play and now that he is with the Iggels as a Giants fan am I supposed to be impressed? Well, I’m not.

I’m going to $iti Field tomorrow and I guess I’ll bring the camera to see the additions of Mets Memories that supposedly have been added and the Throwback’s the boys will be wearing. My question is, I’m guessing they will wear matching cream color pants but what about the caps? I will laugh my ass of if Charlie Samuels sends them out with the awful black/blue billed caps. If you’re going to Throwback, throwback all the way!

BELIEVE IT OR NOT THERE IS GREAT BASEBALL BEING PLAYED AROUND MLB

The days watching baseball get tougher and tougher now that our Mets are non-entities but last night I watched what was one of the best baseball games I have seen in years.

The Seattle Mariners and Chicago White Sox hooked up last night in a game that if it were a post season game would be an instant classic. King Felix Hernandez and Mark Buehrle worked fast, threw strikes and neither one gave an inch. King Felix was helped out by great defensive plays by Adrian Beltre and Ichiro and Buehrle had impeccable command, The game went 14 innings until Junior Griffey drove in the game winner with a single to right to give the M’s a 1-0 win.

So Carlos Delgado has pulled an oblique muscle as he tries to come back from hip surgery. Only the NY Mets could get a guy hurt rehabbing from an injury. Nah, nothing wrong with the team training staff <eyes pointed up to the sky>

I watched part of Petey’s return and it gave me a big YAWN!!!! I watched the Philly telecast and Tom McCarthy nearly pissed his pants going wild over Petey hitting 91 on the gun. He looked hittable and I’d bet by his third start he’ll get his tits lit.

By the way Mike Silva has video of the Shane Victordouchebag getting a beer bath from some fat slob in the Wrigley bleachers. Phillies fans are outraged by the Cub fans gross behavior. That’s like Hugh Hefner calling Dennis Hoff a pimp.

The Mets have decided to wear throwback uni’s this weekend but they will not not be “Mets Throwbacks” but more like the uniform worn by the 1905 World Champion New York Giants. The difference though will be a Mr. Met patch on the sleeve and the sleeve cuffs will be blue and orange. Next season the Skill Sets have planned to rename the team the Bridegrooms.

Check out Pro Baseball Central tonight at 9PM EDST as Joe McDonald and I talk about the mess that is the NY Mets and what the future of the franchise looks like you can join the conversation as well at (646) 595-4462. If you can’t join us live you can listen on the podcast right here at TEKS or on our Pro Baseball Central site.

More than Beltran, or Delgado or anyone of the dozen players on the DL The player who is missed the most is Jose Reyes, not just for his bat and glove but for his energy. Love him or hate him you can not deney this lifeless bunch of Mets could use a does of Jose-Jose-Jose.

IF YOU MISSED LIVAN’ START LAST NIGHT, DON”T WORRY HE’S NOT GOING ANYWHERE

Livan Hernandez pitched like shit again last night but after the game GM Omar Minaya said he is not swayed by Hernandez awful second half, in fact he is in the process of signing Livan to a three year extension. Minaya said “Look, right now Livan is struggling, I know that, you know that, Adam Rubin knows that, but he has a track record, so at the end of the day, you know what I mean, he has value for us as an organization plus his wife makes a mean paella”

In the Mets world of ugly, Frenchy Francouer is starting to look beautiful to some Mets fans but be warned, it’s the lighting that makes him handsome when you get him home you will regret it. Don’t be swayed by Frenchy, it’s just lust in your heart, he is not the answer.

Hummmm let’s see mow the lawn during the hottest part of the day or watch the Mets and Oliver Perez pitch ? I think I’ll mow the lawn and take my mother in law shopping !

I watched the Red Sox-Tigers game last night and yes I was very happy to see Youk charge the mound and even go extreme and throw his helmet at Jersey Rick Porcello ( I was waiting for the cage and ladder the come down on Fenway for an old time ECW throwdown) as it was not just the fact that Victor Martinez was hit by a pitch (in retaliation for Miguel Cabreara getting plunked on the hand) but this was the second game in a row Youk was HBP and add in the fact that the Sawx have been struggling lately it gave his team a lift. Yeah, that’s right bench clearers have a way of lifting the team same as a good beat down in hockey does. I know a lot you folks love to watch sports while knitting a sweater and like it when the fella’s play nice-nice but the truth is a big part of competition is intimidation. That’s why our favorite baseball team is so disrespected because they are intimidated and need to grow some balls not just physically but mentally as well. This team, since that Adam Wainwright curveball to Carlos Beltran in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS has been neutered. From the owner to the front office to the players this is one passive bunch that has a disconnected with it’s fan base and this city because we don’t tolerate passiveness and excuse makers which is what the New York Mets are now.

Word to Jerry Manuel: Neither you or Gary Sheffield are coming back to the Mets next year. In fact if Sheff is re-signed I won’t be coming back to $iti Field next year same goes if Carlos Delgado is re-signed as well.

Word is that Billy Wags will be activated to the big league roster this Sunday and now the speculation begins, is it better to trade Wags before the 31st ? Or keep him and let him file for free agency and get a supplemental draft pick for him? I’d take the draft pick. Sorry Billy but it’s a business decision.

Keep a good thought for Scott Schoenwiese as he tries to deal with his life’s tragedy.

I’d say by the next two weeks most of the newspapers in this town will stop covering the Mets with more than one writer and in fact don’t be surprised by the next road trip all you get is the AP game story. With the financial crunch and the fact that the NFL pre-season is starting the big stories in this town will be The Highlanders, The Giants, The Jets and The Highlanders. Unless something Bernazard like happens the Mets will be a fart in the wind to the fish wraps..

Most stories in sports don’t shock me anymore but I have to admit this story shocked the shit out me. I admired this guy but now he is just a no good scumbag
