YEAH, I KNOW THE METS STINK BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN YOU CAN’T ENJOY A DAY AT CITI FIELD ESPECIALLY WHEN IT’S FOR A PITCH IN FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Lynn Cohen works tirelessly for her Pitch In For A Good Cause foundation and as her last event of the season she has a deal for you  remember, there will come a day during the winter that you wish you were at a ball game even to watch this bunch of slugs :

Come celebrate with GKR and our loyal supporters! Food, free GKR tee, stand on the Citi Field warning track during anthem, raffles and fun, fun fun! Get 15% off tickets and all GKR merchandise for blog readers only now through August 15th. Use coupon code “blogger”

In April 2009, a bright-eyed woman named Lynn Cohen began exciting plans for the second annual fundraising event for her beloved foundation, Pitch in for a Good Cause (aka garykeithandron.com). Hope for the future couldn’t have been more rosy, and the inaugural event at Shea Stadium had sold out so fast that she’d had to add extra tickets. Surely the final weekend of Citi Field’s first season would be just as thrilling, if not more so. Hey, maybe our Mets would already be in the playoffs by then!

Optimistic Lynn purchased 800 tickets in the Big Apple seating area at Citi Field for the October 3, 2009 game. With those tickets, she happily added on 800 “meal plans,” including a tasty gourmet appetizer extravaganza and a $15 swipe card to be used anywhere in the ballpark–more than enough for Shake shack burger and shake! What a gorgeous day it will be, she thought. And the cheering, smiling GKR fans would send our Metsies off into October baseball…

Clearly Optimistic Lynn will not be working as a fortune teller anytime soon. Her powers of telling the future are alas way less potent than her ability to design a supercute t-shirt. Who could have foretold what our August 2009 lineup would look like? Where’s our slugging first baseman, our lightening fast short stop, our brand new 8th inning set-up pitcher, our multi-Gold Glove center fielder? Lynn could swear this team looked different when she bought those shiny new tickets…

On August 10th, Less Optimistic Lynn woke up and said “UH OH.” Obviously if the team is firmly in 5th place, the fundraiser is in danger! What to do with all of the tickets and swipe cards on the desk? Let’s make it a party, she thought. Not an end of the year party, but the beginning of a new one! A 2010 New Beginning party. Come to Citi Field with your GKR friends to purge the bad moments of 2009 and celebrate the good ones…and the even better ones that are sure to come next year.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Come to our party and
Let’s start anew!

MR. RICCO TO LEAD THE METS ?

This has been a hot rumor for awhile but now our man on the inside, Adam Rubin has put it out there that Asst’ GM John Ricco looks to be the next man to run the Mets as it looks like Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel as well as the coaching staff are as good as gone too.

Ricco is the new breed of GM who has a grasp on stats and can speak in public without stumbling. No offense to Omar but it looks like Jeffey was as embarrassed by Omar’ public speaking as much as we was that Tony B was running wild.

Read the article and see if you get the same feeling I get that the Skill Sets are strapped for dough and will use the  $30 mil to pay off players and Omar and Manuel and not on free agents.

I feel bas for Jerry Manuel as he does not deserve to get fired but there needs to be a purge, a cleansing if you will of the organization and unfortunately Manuel has to go as well.

John Ricco GM. Bobby Valentine MGR. I can get aboard that bandwaggon.

NON METS: THIS SCARES ME TO DEATH

A non-Mets but a baseball story here. I just read where a woman from Staten Island sued the New Springville Little League and Little League International because her son, aged 12 at the time torn up his knee sliding into second base. Her claim was the coaches were negligent in teaching her son how to slide properly.

The first thing I want to know about the child is was he overweight. I’m not picking on the kid if he was fat I’m asking because in 10 years of Little League coaching I’ve had 10,11 and 12 year olds that were so over weight we didn’t have baseball pants to fit them or shirts. I had a 12 year old who wore a 40 waist pants and XXL shirt (his parents thought it was so cute that Big Mike was playing ball even if he couldn’t run, catch or swing a bat without weezing) so maybe this young man was a bit to heavy and that led to his injury.

My next question would be is the child a special education student? Many parents never tell coaches that their child suffers from ADD or ADHD. I am not an educator or a psychiatrist so when I yell at a kid for not paying attention or not looking at me when I’m speaking, it’s because I think the kid is a goof off, if I know in advance that the kid has issues I’d approach him a different way but Little League is forbidden to ask if a child has behavioral problems. That is a huge issue. I’ve had many kids like that, in fact one kid was just a real nasty sort and one day at practice when he was tired of hearing me tell him to catch the ball with two hands he told me to go fuck myself. My son heard this and was ready to beat the kid to a pulp. Finally when the mother told me he didn’t take his “meds” that day I realized the kid was sick.

I volunteer for lot’s of things because I believe in giving back. No one grew up in a better environment than me and I tried to give that to my own kids. I always feel for children who come from homes where it’s not ideal and I’ve always felt that sports is a way of showing kids that teamwork and pulling for one and other is a life lesson and for the most part kids are great it’s the parents that suck.

One thing Little League needs to do is run coaching seminars in the winter to help ladies and gentlemen who would like to volunteer and either don’t know the rules or they are intimidated by other coaches. I’ve had teams where I needed two other people to help me and it was hard between the apathetic parents (the majority unfortunately ) and the ones who feel they are limited in what they know or can do about the sport. If the parents had some guidance the program works a lot smoothly.

I hope this woman will be happy with the money she gets (I know the ambulance chaser who took the case will put his take to good use <sarcastic>) and maybe her conscience won’t bother her when she passes the New Springville Little League field when it’s gates are locked and the grounds are full of weeds and the kids who’s could have made great friends and learned that there are people who not only are there to teach you to play baseball but to listen to your problems and try to help you are all gone but then again when you sue a local Little League you have no conscience.

I wanted to hurl when I read this. Although having served on jury duty on Staten Island I’m not surprised. To be quite honest, when I was on a panel for a civil case involved the MTA and a woman who fell on a bus the answers by the folks on the panel to the attorneys questions were embarrassing. Some woman claimed she couldn’t serve on the jury because she had to be home every day at 4PM to make dinner fro her husband. Another man said he lived in Totenville and coming downtown was a “pain in the ass” for him. So this moronic verdict is not shocking.

LOOK UP IN THE SKY….IT’S A BIRD…IT’S A PLANE….

I’m on my way back to NYC (sitting in Orlando Intl Airport as I type this as our flight is delayed 1 hour) so I’m reading some of the Mets stories and some e mails I recieved from fans (thank you Steve Mittleman) who were in SD over the weekend and the concensus is the boys from Flushing are mailing it in.

There is nothing worse in sports than being called a quitter, remeber back to Keith Hernandez call the club that a few years ago and Mike Piazza jumping on him, so to say tha this team are a bunch on quitters is serious and one I won’t make until I see the team in action this week.

I’ll say this as Ihave to leave and board my flight. Ozzie Gullien is my hero and we cave men have to stick together.

ANYONE WATCH THE GAME LAST NIGHT?

Are you guys staying up late to watch our hero’s on the Left Coast? I see that L-Hern had nothing last night but a batting practice fastball and we now have A-Hern back could L-Millz be far behind for a Back to the Future retro ?

Congrats to Big Pelf on becoming a first time Daddy.

It seems I’ve hit a nerve with some readers on calling out D-Wright for not charging the mound after Brad Thompson whizzed a pitch at his head, and I will say that I am stunned that some of you guys think he did the right thing by not going after Thompson. All I can tell you pacifists is the Mets have a rep around baseball as a bunch of pussies who when they are challenged never step up not just to fight but when times get tough they wilt like flowers in a rain storm. Thing will never change until the team grows some balls and if you think that is neanderthal thinking well it is and I don’t apologize for that and if you don’t like it then kiss my hairy cave man ass.

Thank God for the New York Fottball Giants to take my mind off this awful Mets season

FIT TO FIGHT ? OR JUST NOT FIT?

Just coming bck from the Magic Kingdom and looking at video of today’s Mets 9-0 win over the Cards and a few things stand out for sure:

When does the training staff take a hit here a la Tony B after the latest hammy buster by Jon Niese. I feel bad for young Niese as he has to go under the knife to fix his ripped hamstring this on top of the news that Gary Sheffield’s hammy is barking (it seems Sheff felt it wasn’t worth his while to run out a ball in the gap for double due to this leg problems and you want to know why this team is in the shitter?) and Jose Reyes “cramp” is now scar tissue. With all the pulled muscles and miss diganosies the whole training and strength and conditioning staff needs to be looked at.

I’m starting to wonder about Daivd Wright? How the hell didn’t he charge the mound and pummel the shit out of Brad Thompson after that fastball wizzed by his head? Don’t give me this “he held his compsure for the good of the team bullshit” this team is going no place but home after Oct 3rd it would have done the team some good to see the face of the franchise show some mettle.

Please excuse the more than usual spelling errors as it is 12:45 AM and I’m beat

SO MUCH FOR THE WILD CARD RUN EH?

I guess I’m not missing much from  our Mets? I see that Johan gave the Mets innings they needed due to Nelly Figs either sucking or missing so Buffalo so much he pitched like shit trying to get back there but the Mets could not hold a lead as Sean Heilman and Frankie Rods gave up the lead and the game to El Hombre and his Posse.

And now what, Luis Castillo tripped over a glve and is out with a sprained ankel? So who plays second base? Berroa? Tatis? Murph???????????????????

I’m not even thinking of the Mets right now as I’m in the happiest place on Earth or so the Disney staff keeps telling me over, and over, and over again.

GREETINGS FROM THE HOUSE OF MOUSE

Just have a minutte here to say hi from Disney World. Saturday I listened to Angel Pagan hit that 8th inning granny that proved to be the game winner. I see last night Big Pelf was not on his game and tonight Nelly Figs is back and starting.

I see I struck a nerve with my Billy Joel comments but like I say his is not the kind of music I listen to and it’s pretty weak to plat th elast concert at Shea and be a New Yorker and give in to Phillyfans by wearing thier colors.

Speaking of Philly fans there were a lot of them in the Magic Kingdom all of them in thier new Phillies cap andnew shirts all bandwaggon jumpers.

Tons of Rays fans as you wouls suspect and many Cardinal fans but the biggest group here are the English soccer fans with Everton the team most fancy.
