FORGET BAY, METS NEED JOHNNY DAMON

It’s time to tell Jason Bay and Bengi Molina we’re not interested. Call both their bluffs in fact just tell Bay’s agent “sorry we’ve had second thoughts” then call Molina’s guy and Rod Barajas guy and the first one to say yes to a 2yr incentive laden deal gets that deal.

The reason I’m ready to “Bay-O, Bayyyyyyyyyyyy-O we’ve got no deal so you gotta go home”, is I want the Mets to sign Johnny Damon to play LF in 2010 and 2011

Now I’m not saying that Damon is better than Bay, he’s not, but the drop off is not so fierce that you could get Damon for half the money you’d spend on Bay and with less commitment. Then of course there is the all important intangibles. Damon is a dynamic presences in the clubhouse, he has dissed publicly by the Highlanders so you know he is going to come to camp ready to make a big statement, and he wears two world championship rings from two of the highest profile team sin sports. Not to mention the good will you would build up with Scott Boras for making his client look good after he (Boras) dropped the ball with the Highlander negotiations.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the last team Jason Bay wants to be a part of is the New York Mets. There is no mystery team, there is no competition for his services, now would be the time to tell Bay and his agent we’re going in another direction and announce the signing of Johnny Damon to a 2yr/18 mil deal with incentives to get the money over $20 mil. Damon is a winner and those types of players are in short supply I Queens.

Enjoy Camden Yards Jason.

  1. Agree 100%.

Regarding Bay not wanting to play here – I said months ago that no free agents with talent and choices would play for the Mets. Either the proprietor of this website or a commentator said I was wrong and that the players’ association would push Bay or whoever to take the highest offer.

Once again, I, the guy who told you two years ago that omar sucked and had to go, am right.

I’m not saying this to gloat – I’m saying this to encouarage people to embrace my dire but true point of view – that this franchise is DOOMED until the wilpons sell. All this stuff in the interim – ‘if omar does this, if omar does that, if we get lackey, if we get halliday, if reyes is healthy’ – and so on is just a big circle jerk.

So – you were late to the omar sucks party. you were late to the ‘no free agents will sign here’ party. Now I am once again inviting you to the boycott the Mets until the wilpons sell party. Don’t be wrong again…40 more years of jeff wilpon awaits us unless WE HURT THE WILONS IN THEIR WALLETS RIGHT NOW.

  2. George the Stork says:

I’m in. Let’s get Damon. I can live with the shoddy outfield play to get a kick-ass leader on the team, and an above-average lefty bat.

The delta in money should be spent on pitching, pitching, pitching. I know Joel Pineiro is not a big name, but he sure did a number on the Mets twice last year with his pinpoint breaking stuff. He’s an underrated pitcher — I really like him. (Although yes, anyone could look like a world beater against us.)

  3. Maybe Cliff Lee’ll have a big grude against the Phils & come to $iti next year for revenge? Damon is good. He’ll grow his hair back & play like he’s got the powers of Samson. Can we dump Luis on the Cubs now? Now that the Yanks have Nick Johnson let’s send them the book on how to operate the DL.

  4. If you sign Damon sign bay trade Beltran for ML Ready 2Bmen and pitching.

  5. Wow. I agree we need players with balls, but Johnny D is getting long in the tooth. We’d be screaming at his inability to cover LF and throw anyone out from the deepest part of Citi. I think this is a case where the outer profile may make sense, but the reality just does not work. I agree with telling Bay to shit in his hat. And I pray that someone, somewhere, signs Molina before the dope raises his offer to 3 years and $20 million. Does it not tell the dope something that absolutely no other team is bidding on Molina? Especially in this era, where many teams could use the upgrade.

I say one more time…stay away from a 36 year old catcher.

I agree Rich. “We” need to get younger. Damon’s defense would be an issue covering the questionably expansive left field in Shake Shack Stadium. His power numbers would tail off due to the questionably expansive right field of Shake Shack Stadium.

  7. The New York Baseball Digest has a video of the old Polo Grounds on it. I saw the Mets play there in ’62 and’63. IT WAS GREAT! Shea sucked. $iti Feild is a big upgrade on the 2 of them. And if you don’t agree with me you must be a Yankee fan (ho ho).

  8. Richard Deegan says:

Get Johny Damon!!! He’ll bring more class to the place than any of the others. Promote young shortstops to go into short left for the soft tosses.
Any while they’re at it, don’t let Shelly Duncan slip by!!! Remember the last MinL HR champ Mets stole from the Yanks? Also a first baseman, and they’re still talking about Marvelous Marv.

  9. having met Shelly Duncan when he played on SI I wouldn’t mind it one bit if were signed by the Mets If the team is going to suck at least suck with guys I like
