JANE JARVIS 1915-2010

Mets fans of a certain age are mourning the death of another Shea Stadium icon, Mets organist extraordinaire Jane Jarvis passed away yesterday at the age of 94 at the Llian Booth Actors Home in Engelwood NJ where she lived since 2008 when a crane accident displaced her from her Upper East Side apartment in Manhattan.

Ms. Jarvis had a slew of musical credits on her resume but to Mets fans she was the lady whose sweet tones of the Thomas organ filled our summer days and nights at Shea Stadium.

Rest in peace Sweet Lady Jane whenever I hear the Mexican Hat Dance I’ll think of you.

  1. Amen. Along with the Mexican Hat Dance and Meet The Mets, GarryOwen (for Tug McGraw) is another song I hear in my mind when I think of Jane Jarvis.

  2. Murphy used to call her The Queen of Melody. She used to play The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You for Pat Zachry.

  3. I’m sorry to learn of her passing.

However I’ll take the late Eddie Layton over her any day of the week.

I’d take the late Mike Smith of the DC5 over her too.

  4. I am saddened to hear of Jane’s passing, Known as the queen of melody at Shea Stadium I fondly remember the day I first step into Shea Stadium as a Young boy my first ever Mets game and the announcer said stand up and sing along as we go on the air on WOR TV 9 as Jane Jarvis Plays ” MEET THE METS ” I followed along with the words on the center field score board. Growing up as a young man I always wondered why the MET’S let go of Jane while always humming the song when the Mets took the field back in the day, I always wondered what was the name of that song well we all know now it’s called Let’s Go METS a song that Jane wrote for the METS. I am also very sad it is hard to find Jane’s Shea Stadium music anywhere If you search high and low on the Internet you will find the National Anthem and Meet The Mets that Jane played at Shea, I am also saddened to see the NY MET’S on there official web site as of this morning 2/1/10 at around 9am have no mention of Jane’s passing, Shame on them !! Rest in Peace Jane and thanks for the song, good times and the memories at Shea Stadium this Jane Jarvis Fan will miss you.

PS… While Eddie Layton was good Jane was better !!
