BLOGGING WITH A HEAVY HEART

My blogging the rest of the week will be sporadic as last night my mother, who was just short of turning 97 years old, passed away.

My mother was born in  County Sligo Ireland and came to America when she was 16 years old. Her and my Dad were married for 57 years until he passed away back in 1994.  She leaves behind four children, twelve  grand children, eight great grand children and more neices and nephews than I can count both  here in the U.S., Ireland and England.

She was like no other woman of her generation,  if you think I’m an opinionated, my mom had me beat. She did read this blog once and awhile and didn’t care for the language I sometime use and she felt I was a little too much of a wise ass but between her and my dad we were raised in such a way that you were free to express yourself as wanted.  When most mom’s  fought with their son’s to get haircuts, mine encouraged me to grow mine long.  She couldn’t stand Rock music but never told me to turn it down.  Our home was filled with books and music, lot’s of friends and lots and lots of good times.

Even though she lived a long and fabulous life, as a son my heart aches but she would smack me upside the head if she knew I’d moped around after her death.

After my dad died mom was asked how she was coping living alone.  Her answer always was “I don’t live alone, I live by myself”  She was never alone there was always someone around her, either me or my brothers, my sister, my wife my sister in law, her grand kids, her great grand kids her friends, it was because of that whenever she would see an elderly person pushing a shopping cart or walking to the store alone, or god forbid eating a meal by themselves,  it sadden her.  She loved it when we’d take her to the mall how we fought over who was going to pay for her dress or shoes? She said she hated it when we made a fuss over her but I never believed it. How could we not?   She wonder how is it she could pick the phone call one of us and get picked up and taken anywhere she wanted? We told her it was payback for the way she took care of us our whole lives.

If you go to a house of worshiper this weekend in your prayers think of all the people in the world that are alone and have no family to watch over them. Prayer for parents who are estranged from their children, that they can find a way to settle whatever difference it is that split them apart.

That’s was another lesson my mother taught us, always look out for the less fortunate because of how blessed we were.

CAUTION THE SURGEON GENERAL HAS DETERMINED THAT READING THIS POST COULD BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH

Trying to write something creative this morning and it’s just not happening so I’ll just throw some shit on the wall see what sticks:

If Jose Reyes is 100 % healthy then why not let him start on opening day? Why is it even a question? His legs don’t seem to be any problem so if his thyroid levels are fine then why wouldn’t Jose be at shortstop on Monday?

I would love to be in the room when soon to be Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov and Jay-Z sit down and talk to LeBron James about joining the Brooklyn Nets. Mr. Prokhorov is going to be the most newsworthy sports owner this town has seen since a big blowhard ship builder from Cleveland rolled into town.

This Monday has been renamed Monumental Monday. Opening day at $iti Field. The NCAA Final and two hour episode of 24.  I’m busting sweat just thinking of how the Jack Bauer, Dana Walsh  interrogation scene will play out.

Major tip of the BLUE Mets cap to Shannon Shark over at Mets Police for uncovering the Fanwalk faux pau naming Sid Fernandez the winner of Game 7 of the’86 World Sereis when it was actually Roger McDowell who earned the win. At the time that game was over, we really didn’t give a rats ass who go the winner to tell the truth all I remember is pandemonium in the streets of Queens and that for one on the dozen or so times in my life I woke up the next day in my bed having no recollection of how I got home.  Ahhhhhh good times. Also Mets Police is recruiting for the Blue Cap Army to meet up Monday at $iti Field.

It’s a three man race to grab the 25th spot on the Mets roster. The candidates are Mike Jacobs, Frank Catalanotto and Chris Carter. Very tough choices. The first one I’d dismiss in Jacobs who is a hit a home run or miss guy and a not very good first baseman. It was commendable of Jacobs to put on the catcher gear and volunteer to be the emergency catcher. How often do you need an emergency catcher? Carter has earned the name The Animal for Jerry Manuel and Catalanotto is a savvy vet who can play just about any position on a baseball field. If I had to make the choice, I’d take Frankie The Cat.

Who? Raul Valdes Who? Raul Valdes Who? Raul Valdes

Ladies and Gentlemen please welcome the new and improved LMILLZ

I don’t look at Darryl Strawberry as being a quitter for leaving The Apprentice, it’s more like he was bored and tired of the stupid tasks he was asked to do. Whoever signed off on making this show two hours should BE FIRED! Thank God for TiVO. By the way as soon as Cyndi Lauper and Summer Sanders are fired I’ll be done with The Apprentice.

So long Chris Coste, Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out!

It looks like the new McFadden’s at $iti Field is going to be THE place to be.

“PLACE YA BETS, NO MORE BETS”

The Mets front office is trying to put a happy face on this team of theirs but deep down I’m sure they’re doing shots of Maalox over the pitching staff.

Big Pelf’ Long Balls on Parade has to be alarming to Mets decision makers so much so that the name Bronson Arroyo has come up again as a Mets trade target. A deal for Arroyo or any real life honest to goodness starting pitcher should have been done this off season but either money issued or stupidity prevented any such deal from happening.

The old saw is “don’t put too much stock in spring training” and that’s fine when your names is Santana, or Lincicum or Seaver. But when you are a struggling starter like Big Pelf, OP and Maine Man, you need to show me why I should have confidence in you on the mound and so far as we get to a week before opening day my confidence in this pitching staff on a scale of 1-10 is about a 3.

Am I being overly pessimistic? You tell me. Let’s play the Mike Francesa Approved “Unnda/Ovah Game with the pitching staff. Please go to the comments and leave your picks.

Number of games Johan Santana will win in 2010? Unnda/Ovah 14

Number of wins combined for Big Pelf/OP/Maine Man? Unnda/Ovah 27

Number of innings combined for Big Pelf/OP/Maine Man? Unnda/Ovah 450

Number of different starting pitchers the Mets will use in 2010? Unnda/Ovah 8

Number of appearances by Vitamin Pedro in 2010? Unnda?Ovah 75

Number of saves for Frankie Rodz in 2010? Unnda/Ovah 33

Number of pitchers total used by the Mets in 2010? Unnda/Ovah 21

SWING AND SWAY, THE METS WAY

I tell ya, this guy Nelly Figs if anything, is a real survivor. Just when you think he’s ready to get the boot, he now looks to be the long man in the Mets pen come opening day. The front office is finally coming to it’s senses as it looks like Jenry Mejia will go to Bingo to hone his pitching skills.

So the bullpen is now rounding into focus and come a week from Monday the pen should be:

Frankie Rodz

Vitamin Pedro (take one every day)

Kiko Calero

Ryota Igarashi (please pick another number.  18 does not fit you)

Hisamori Takahashi (the second lefty)

Fernando Neve (que ABBA)

Nelly Figs (que Destiny’s Child)

What stands out about this bunch of relievers is just three-Rodriquez, Vitamin P, and Kiki C are true relievers, the other four can be plugged into the rotation as well as relieve. What does that tell you about the faith the front office has in Big Pelf, OP, and Maine Man ? Not exactly a vote of confidence eh?

WEREWOVLES OF LONDON? NO, COYOTES OF TRIBECA

If you read the NY Post this morning besides the front page picture of half the NYPD chasing a poor coyote just steps from my office, the best thing in that fish wrap today was Justin Terranova’s 5 Questions with Bobby Ojeda. Last year during the stink of August and September, Bobby-O was at his best on the pre and pst games shows with his co-host Curley, Chris Carlin. Ojeda was visibly and vocally pissed off by the poor play and attitude of the team and in this interview he still is not afraid to tell it like it is:

Q: Coming out of spring training with Carlos Beltran out and Jose Reyes questionable for Opening Day, do you think the first month of this season is about survival for the Mets?

A: You can’t have that attitude. You heard that ad nauseum last year. “Let’s hold on until so and so comes back.” It drove me nuts. On any given team, you are going to have people injured. The attitude has to be that you are going to go out and stick it to people. We are going to remember what happened last year and teams are going to pay. “Just survive until Beltran and Reyes get healthy” is a loser attitude.

Amen Brother Bobby. AMEN!!!!

Jose Reyes is not a fan of shit kickin’ music. Me either. Reason #4,564,098 why it’s great to live in NYC, NO COUNTRY MUSIC STATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!

The Mets are interested in Chad Gaudin. I’m starting to think the Mets front office is staffed by a bunch of hoarders, shit plied up all over the place. Stay out of the dumpster Omar.

Metstradamus takes on the Jenry Mejia debate as only Metstradamus can. Looks like there is some sort of march on the SNY studios to protest the promotion of Jenry Mejia to the big league club tonight at around 6PM. Who’s a thunk it? Mets fan Teabaggers !

OK sit down for a minute. Are you seated?  OK. I wanted you to sit because I’m going to write something positive about Mets management. Now this happens about as often as NBC has a hit TV show (have you seen that disaster called The Marriage Ref? I love fellow Mets fan Jerry Seinfeld but that show is an abomination. I’m sure Coco is laughing his rich-pompadour ass off) but with the news that the old Home Run Apple will now be moved outside the Willets-Point subway stop and the adding of the Mets Hall of Fame and the pictures of our former and current Mets heroes all over the ball park and plaza, plus painting the place in glorious blue and orange, I have to say I very happy. It just shows you that sometimes people in charge do hear us and are opinions and suggestions are not just farts in the wind.

I HATE TO WISH TIME AWAY, BUT I CAN’T WAIT FOR OPENING DAY!

The Brooklyn Met Fan says we should not rush to judgment on Dwight Gooden’s latest arrest for DWI, BMF says that the story of what really happened will come out but Gooden is listening to attorney’s and not making a statement as of yet. As I posted in the comments section of BMF’s site, as most readers here know, I’m a big Gooden fan and having met him a few times he was just a great guy but when you drive while intoxicated I have a huge problem with you.

In much better news, Jose Reyes is back in St. Lonesome and it seems just his presences in the locker room has amped up the team. What Jerry Manuel has to watch for is Reyes trying to get two weeks of lost time into two days. Reyes is adamant about being in the Opening Day lineup, we all hope he is.

Mike Silva has posted a story on the old Mayor’s Trophy games between the Mets and Yankees which I never remember being a big deal.

Josh Levitt of Jorge Says No fame has started up another site, MLBfreeagency.com the site as you’d imagine will focus on current and up coming free agents and all around good baseball talk. It’s well worth your while to check it out and bookmark the site.

Johnny Maestro, one of he great Rock and Rollers of the 60’s first with The Crest’s (16 Candles) and then with the Brooklyn Bridge (The Worst That Could Happen “Girl, I heard your getting married/heard your getting married/you know that’s not my scene” )

Whose music was a stable of NYC, especially Brooklyn, died yesterday at the age of 70. R.I.P. Johnny

DWIGHT GOODEN ARRESTED FOR DWI

After reading about Dwight Gooden getting arrested for DWI, I can now say I’m done with him.

With all the screaming a yelling over steroid and HGH use, I wish all that anger went against people who drive drunk. Think about what is worse, taking something to hit a ball a bit further or to revive your muscular system, or driving a car drunk where you can kill innocent people and yourself ? According to the police report Gooden had a child in the car. UN-FUCKING-REAL.

Looks like fans, the Mets, the Highlanders, and the Newark Bears need to stop being his enablers. Every time he runs afoul with the law, he gets help by one of those teams I mentioned and adulation from both fan bases in NYC.

If these charges are true and he’s convicted, I hope the judge has the balls to throw his ass in jail and then I want the Used Car Salesman to ban him from baseball.

UPDATE: I thought Gooden was drunk but it was high on drugs just as bad THROW THE BOOK AT HIM You want to get high? You want get shit faced? STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

R.I.P. BARON MIKEL SCICLUNA

The ring bell tolls ten times in honor of Baron Mikel Sicluna who passed away at the age of 80. The most fascinating thing about BMS is he really was from Malta.  Rest in peace Baron
