EAT THE RICH

Eat the Rich: I gotta get this off my chest

I love the outrage from Highlander fans that Mets fan and other non-believers in the Pinstripe religion have the gall to mock the former World Series champs as they went down in flames to a team from a football mad state. Maybe the Flock form the Bronx will now realize that there are 29 other fan bases out there all deserving of their slice of the World Series pie. Nah, those who don the “look at my 27 TIME WORLD CHAMPION jacket” or the my favorite the big gas guzzling SUV with the huge NY on the back window, a staple for Highlander fans from Staten Island, only care about winning, as rooting for the Highlanders makes up for some deficiency in their lives.  Now I’m not saying all Highlander fans are like that and not even the majority but mostly the younger 20-30 year old fans are that way. There whole grasp of Highlander history is the organization has won 27 World Series titles and that’s it. So maybe with their team out of the post season they could sit down and do some research on the history of their team ? Nah never happen all they want to here is Cliff Lee and Carl Crawford are signed for a quarter of a million dollars, because it’s not scouting or sabermetric analysis that fuels the Highlanders it’s dead presidents baby.

Congratulations to the SF Giants for winning the 2010 NL Pennant and for playing in one of the best baseball games I’ve seen a long time. I have to tip my Mets cap to Bruce Bochy, who I’ve never been a fan of, for bring in The Freak to pitch the 8th inning. What a concept, bringing in your best pitcher to win a game. Even though Lincecum got in trouble with two on and one out, Brain Wilson came in and did what he did a lot of this season, get a 5 out save.

As a Mets fan it’s tough to root for Cody Ross who as a Fishhead killed the Mets and rubbed their noses in it but to go from cast off to NLCS MVP is impressive.

How about Bengi Molina? No matter what he gets a World Series ring and a check.

The one thing that has me skittish about Sandy Alderson taking over as Mets GM, is his philosophy of hiring non-descript managers. Alderson like the guy in the white short sleeve dress shirt with the blue tie and tie clip. Mets fans are looking for more of an aggressive Carhartt wearing type of dock boss as field general. Maybe that’s why this process is dragging out and that Josh Byrnes is getting a call back interview. Could it be the guy who says, he’s cool with Wally Backman being the manager gets the job?

  1. Very vivid picture you paint about those damned huge back window stickers. I have had only one accident in 29 years of driving but when I see those stickers I strongly consider making one of those cop show smash into the side of the vehicle to run it off the road moves.

I take some solace in the thought that surely someone who has one of those gigantic stickers has accidentally backed over their own pet and had to bury it in the backyard marked with a professional headstone that ironically bears the same large Yankee symbol and the text “Here Lies Thurmutt Muttson, Our Beloved Beagle.”

  2. Most of the obnoxious of logo-bearing Highlander fans have no idea what the team is about. They equate the “interlocking NY”, to use King Douche Bag’s term (Kay) to associate themselves with winning, and as you say, make up for some inadequacy. True story- of the 70% of the people in my gym who wear Highlander garb all year, most of them were in neutral clothes or NYG gear this weekend. They can’t be associated with the team they “love” now-they didn’t win. Why would I wear their stuff. They ask me all the time how I could wear Mets stuff-they don’t win! Point is, they have no concept of loyally following a team, it what have you done for me five minutes ago, and how much are you going to spend this winter to please me?

Well if thats the case…I hope Alderson gives a
guy by the name of Matt Walbeck (anybody remember him ?)a good look. Walbeck took the double A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates the Altoona Curve from the worst team in the league last year to Eastern League Champions this year and guess who they beat to win that title?…the AA affiliate of the Skanks the Trenton Thunder ! He was also named the Eastern League manager of the year and then a week after all this he was fired by the “brass” in Pittsburgh for wanting to be “bumped up some” in the organization.

His style of managing is similar to Backmanns
    “without the baggage”.

    Hey Babe,

I’m wearing my 2008 All Star Game hat as I write this. Once the weather cools I’ll wear my Yankee jacket on weekends. Gotta problem wit dat?

  5. Steve,

Michael yes indeed the folks you ventured to Coogan’s Bluff are smiling

  7. And speaking of merchandising…….

One can’t help but notice the abundance of Shake Shacker items stuck in stores at greatly reduced prices.

I feel for the poor retailers.

  8. Gil Hodgesq says:

Please stop with the Wally Backman pining.

The inclination for the Mets as an organization and their fans to embrace thugs, drunks, lazy dogs, and other miscreants has got to stop.

Wally – loved him as our 2Bman in ’86, but the profane, heavy-drinking, tobaccah-chewin’ redneck manager model went out of style in the late 80s or earlier.

I’m thinking more Gil Hodges and less Billy Martin, and guess where Wally falls on that scale?

  9. kranepool says:

Funny you should mention that Michael. I went to get my car washed yesterday and as the car came off the conveyor the guys who dry off the car were using these midnight blue rags to do the job. Upon closer inspection the rags all had CHAMBERLAIN 62 on them. They do give the car a nice glossy finish

  10. I think Joba will be a Highlander no more this off season. Maybe they’ll deal him to…Toronto, where Canadian Club is cheap?

  11. kranepool says:

Rich, the Highlander off season could be Monty Python-esque as the dead wagon will pull up to the Mall of the South Bronx asking to bring out your dead Joba, Vasquez, Burnett shouldbe on the pile

I have no issue with your hat or jacket, they don’t obstruct your view of the road while you’re driving (unless you wear your hat too low on your face like certain members of your favorite team).
