RANDOM ACTS OF RANTING

I hope you have time to check out the BASEBALL BLOGGERS ALLIANCE BASEBALL TALK show on Blog Talk Radio last night as I hosted the show and my guests were SF Giants bloggers Scott of The Crazy Crabbers and Julian of Splashing Pumpkins, and we reviewed the Giants championship season.

I also have to make a correction. In the beginning of the show I made reference to the passing of Sparky Anderson and mentioned the Reds beating the Highlanders in 1975 World Series which was a huge blunder on my part when I should know it was the 1976 World Series where the Big Red Machine kicked the Highlanders ass. I could blame it on the fact that I was up at 5AM and worked a ten hour shift and did this show at 11PM but that’s no excuse and your right I need to grow a pair.

You just know that this Charlie Samuels mess is going to get worse before it gets better. The Mets can say Samuels is indefinitely suspended but we all know Samuels will never work in baseball again. As soon as he admitted to MLB investigators that he bet on baseball, he accepted his baseball death sentence. I’m just concerned about how long this was going on, who knew what and when did they know it and I’m praying no Mets players were involved in this shit storm.

I have no problem at all with the Mets cutting ties with Hisanori Takahashi for the price Taka and his agent were asking, 3yrs /$12-$15mil the Mets were offering what I believe is a more realistic contract of 1yr+an option for $3mil. Taka was outstanding taking over for Frankie Rodriguez and that’s what he is, a reliever who can give you an inning, two tops. As a starter, when he faces a lineup the second and third time around Taka gets pounded. There is a good possibility that Pedro Feliciano will be coming out of someone else’s bullpen in 2011 as well since he has a higher opinion of his monetary value as a stone cold LOOGY than the Mets do.

Wally Backman gets to WOW Sandy Alderson today as he interviews for the Mets Managers job. Backman is the number one choice for most Mets fans let’s see if can make a big impression on Alderson.

David Lennon says Don Wakamatsu will be the Mets manager. Joel Sherman says Terry Collins will be the next Mets manager. Guess what? The MSM doesn’t have a fucking clue as to who will be the next Mets manager.

  1. Is Salty Parker available?

  2. Wakamatsu? Okay, I can live with any Sun Devil managing the Mets (I am biased), except The Chemist. Collins? Hurdle? Please baseball gods, NO!

  3. We want so badly for Wally Backman to be New York’s next John McGraw. There is no doubt he would get a standing ovation on Opening Day if hired. But the truth is his resume is light. Will Sandy Alderson hire a friend of the Family? Because that’s his best attribute. Being fiery and having Met ties does not a manager make. Somehow Wally is going to have to convince Sandy he has a tremendous Baseball acumen and that he can be a responsible adult on and off the field, all, in two hours during his interview today. In believing Sandy can see through personal missteps, if he feels Wally is intelligent enough, and if he feels Wally can be controlled…Sandy just might hire him. I doubt it though. Hiring him really amounts to appeasing the fans, and I don’t think that’s Sandy’s bag. I’d get behind Wally if hired though and cheer him on Opening Day. But there are better qualified guys that Wally.

  4. Mike BTB, light resume? Really? How did the D-Backs hire him? Forgeting the off field issues, that he did not tell them about, on the field how is it light? Don’t hire him, fine, but light? That being the case hands down the guy that should get the job is Ken Oberkfell. He has been in the organization a decade…including six years at AAA, is that heavy enough?

  5. Yep; light. I stand by that. No need to get so angry. I hardly call Independent Ball, a stint in the ChiSox lower level, a cup of coffee with the DBacks and a year with the Cyclones an extensive resume. Besides, I said I would back him. I’ll pass on Oberkfell, thank you.@pfh64 -

  6. Mike, not angry, just stating a thought. We all have emotional favorites. Fact is we all want a manager that cares about the results like we do. And I know they all do, but we want an emotional attachment as strong as ours. And we all know that Backman, was the type of firery get your uniform dirty player we all love, and since there does not seem to be anyone currently on the roster that feels that way, we figure at least if backman was the manager we would know at least one person in the dugout would feel that way. Personally, I would somehow figure out a way to put Oberkfell & Teufel on the ML staff, and Backman as well, even if none of them are the manager. I know that they will not fire Howard Johnson (thank you, David Wright). They will likely re-assign him,Warthen will probably stay as will Hale…but they need to do something this off season to placate the masses, since they will not likely sign any major players or dump the ones that we all want them to dump, Hell might freeze over and they will be able to get something for them, even if it is a bucket of batting practice balls.

That’s a good point made about “there does not seem to be anyone currently on the roster that feels that way”.

The fact is could the Shake Shackers name a captain at this time? Wright may be the face of the franchise, but he’s not a franchise player. (Too soft) Forget the balance of the current roster. Chalk some off to youth (Thole, Davis) or sheer idiocy. (Reyes)

Again, I’ll state the most important non playing member of an organization is the GM. But here in NY it takes on a much different mentality.

Right now my emphasis would be rebuilding an organization back up from stem to stern. Alderson and some of his staff are a start.

I do agree with Alderson that a manager should be on board executing the organizations policies in the clubhouse and in the dugout. A blue collar baseball mentality is low on the list.

  8. That’s all well said and it looks like we’re on the same page of music. The more of these guys we can incorporate into a coaching staff…the better. It’s just that Backman is an emotional choice. The Mets (Wilpons) have done much of that. I’m just preaching caution as we feed our passion about Wally. If Sandy hires him, I’m all in.
Can I get a second for JOHN STEARNS being involved with the Mets again?@pfh64 -

  9. Mike, I will give you a second and a third…I loved Stearns and no one, and I mean no one, was probably a tougher player to ever wear a Mets’ (no black or Dodger ones, please) uniform. I am also for being careful about the emotional choices. Oh by the way, see the Daily News snippet about Collins losing the Angels’ locker room?
