Time for a stream of semi-consciousness not all of it Mets related :

I’m as upset as most Mets fans with the inactivity so far by the front office in procurement of players but when you look at the list of free agents still available I’m hoping its Sandy Alderson playing the supply and demand game and not the We’re broke game.  There are still some good players and some serviceable ones still looking for employment and as every day goes by without these players signed to a contract I have to believe it’s a day closer to desperation.

One player on the free agent pitchers list is Scott Kazmir, I’d love to see the Mets offer him a minor league deal and an invite to spring training.

I wish HBO’s Rangers-Flyers 24/7 could go on for the whole season. In the three weeks the show has aired, I’ve gotten a better appreciation for Coach Tortorella and his work as a master motivator. The on ice stuff is unbelievably good as Brad Richards tells Flyers career minor leaguer Tom Sestito, who is going off at the Rangers bench like a fucking moron on how he’s going to beat the shit out of every Ranger, “Wow on day in the NHL, it’s like fuckin’ fantasy camp” or Flyer Coach Peter Laviolette telling Dallas Stars to “go fuck himself” when Ott feels Laviolette disrespects his Stars teammates by using their exit to get to the locker room.  By the way, how did the Islanders ever fire Laviolette?  Oh that’s right, Mike Milburry was in charge.

I guess the euphoria over the NY Knickerbockers has died down a bit after back to back losses to Golden State and the Hollywood Fakers. It’s very hard to win in this league without a true point guard who can distribute the ball and keep Stoudimire and ‘Melo happy with dimes leading to points.  Some scoring off the bench, especially at the 2 guard would be nice as well and of course playing defense, especially in the interior is a must. But we know defense and Coach D’Antoni don’t mix, which is why Jimmy Dolan will regret the day he didn’t can Coach D and hire Mark Jackson .

In my Blue heart of hearts, I believe the NY Football Giants will beat the Dallas Cowgirls on Sunday night and win the NFC East but my stomach is still in knots thinking about the porous Giants secondary getting lit up by Tony Romo.  Just got to hope that JPP gets to Romo early and often.

The question Stephen A. Smith should have asked Rex Ryan was not if he’d take Peyton Manning over Mark Sanchez  but would Coach Big Mouth rather have Cam Newton over Dirty Sanchez? With all the Tebowing going on in the MSM, they have of course missed the obvious that Cam Newton is the NEXT BIG THING in the NFL.

If it weren’t for the assholes who make up the New York Highlander hierarchy, we NY Rangers fans would be getting ready to head to the South Bronx for Rangers-Flyers in the Winter Classic. But instead, the House That AJ Burnett Built will host a small time bullshit college football game. I guess it hasn’t sunk in to the powers that be who run the Bronx Bastards that no one in NYC gives a rat’s ass about college football but I guess they will realize it today when about a quarter of the stadium will have ass’s in the seats as opposed to the full house they would have had if they were hosting the Winter Classic.

Plus you know the NHL wanted the Rangers to play either the Montreal Canadiens or the Toronto Maple Leafs at Highlander Stadium but will settle for Rangers-Flyers in Philly just so the NY fan can bring his deep pockets 90 miles south.

To one and all I want to wish a Happy and most importantly a Healthy New Year.

While other teams add players and their fans converse in real baseball talk, we Mets fans are stuck in a Mets minutia malaise. Such as the club sending R.A. Dickey a cease and desist letter about his climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro for charity.  There is no doubt in my mind that Dickey’s reason for doing this is true and from the heart as he is raising money and awareness to teen sex slave trade in third world countries. The problem the Mets have is they have to cover their ass and asset by informing Dickey that if he injures himself and cannot perform is pitching duties; the Mets will void his contract as they have every right to do. It’s always easy to rip the Mets organization but in this case they are just doing this as protection. I am sure they wish Dickey waited until he was retired to climb Kilimanjaro and R.A. knows the consequences he will suffer if he’s injured or worse on this trip but he feels that the conviction of doing what’s right and that the plight of young people used as sex slaves against their will is worth the risk.   

I just hope all’s well that ends well with this venture, Dickey scales the mountain and his goal is met and that he returns home in one piece and ready to report to Pt. St. Lonesome on time.

It’s just a matter of time that Citi Field turns into MLB’s version of Grey Gardens. Bloomberg reports that Standard and Poor’s has dropped their rating of bonds issued for the building of Citi Field to negative.  I have visions of walking the concourse of Citi Field next season and seeing Freddy Skill Sets and Uncle Saul in tattered blue blazers, shirts with frayed collars and power ties with soup stains on them stammering like Elmer Fudd saying “I’m Fred Wilpon I own a baseball team and a yacht”

Hopefully by next week we can get back to analyzing bargain basement players signing with the Mets and try to convince ourselves that 2012 will be a really good season for the Mets.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and enjoyed the extra day off yesterday to recuperate or to return gifts at the mall. I’m still fighting off fatigue this morning, my first day back to work in 3 days, from the holiday and from a huge sports weekend.

It all started for me on Friday night as I attended the Rangers-Flyers game at a jammed packed Madison Square Garden. The Rangers are playing their best hockey in years and with a win last night against the Icelanders have the best record in the NHL Eastern Conference. The Garden rocked like it hasn’t in many years and Rangers fans have fallen in love with this team made up of mainly homegrown players with top notch free agent signings (Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards) that have made the Garden faithful cautiously optimistic  for a deep Stanley Cup run.

Then on Saturday, I was in front of my TV totally engrossed in the Giants-Jets battle in the Meadowlands. The Jets got the ball first and tore through the Giants soft as a marshmallow defense for a touchdown and I thought the G-Men were going to ruin my Christmas but thanks to Brian Shottenheimer and Roarin’ Rex Ryan who forgot that Mark Sanchez and not Joe Namath was QB’ing there team. It was a 99 yard TD from Eli Manning to the newest Giants star Victor Cruz (my family did not appreciate my Cruz Salsa dance I performed in the living room after Cruz crossed the end zone) that changed the whole game and put Rex and Shotty into a panic giving the Giants a big win. As the game ended two guys who are more similar than they realize, Rex Ryan and Brandon Jacobs, traded insults instead of holiday greetings. I now had two of the three wins I wanted for Christmas.

On Christmas day while everyone wanted to open presents and eat and eat and eat, I watched the clock hit high noon and screamed out ‘WELCOME BACK NBA!!!!!” I was thisclose to going on Stub Hub and grabbing a couple of tickets for the game at MSG between the Knicks and Celtics as I try to never miss a chance to see my C’s when they come to town. However it is not in my nature to get into a screaming match on the Baby Jesus Birthday with my wife so I as much as my finger was twitching to click on “BUY”, I stepped away from the computer and went back upstairs to spread holiday cheer and make sure I secured the TV for 12:00. My favorite Celtic player is Rajon Rondo, in fact of all the teams I root for Rondo and Henrik Lundqvist are neck and neck for the title of my favorite player of any team I root for (Eli Manning would be my favorite Giant as for the Mets…hummmm… I’ll get back to you on that….) and to watch that performance by Rondo against the Knicks, made me even more joyous that Danny Anige didn’t deal him off for Chris Paul.

Last night after another Rangers win and sitting with my family and reflecting on a having just a great holiday weekend, I looked around the room at our Christmas tree and the stockings hanging from the mantle and back to reality I returned. First I stared at my Mets Christmas stocking, then I studied the various Mets ornaments on the tree, Mr. Met, 1986 World Champions, David Wright and on the top of one of the dining room chairs, my Mets Christmas hat. It hit me and hit me hard, it’s quite likely that the Mets will not bring me the joy and excitement in 162 games, that the three other sports teams I root for gave me in a weekend.   Quite depressing.

It got me thinking, I cannot be the only one who feels this way. How many of you are multiple sports fans?  I then started to think about the men who own the teams I root for and how different the all are.

The Rangers are owned by Cablevision and Jim Dolan is in charge of both the Rangers and Knicks. Thankfully for Rangers fans, Dolan hates hockey, he loves the revenue it brings in but he leaves the hockey folks alone and for that we Ranger fans are grateful. One thing about Dolan, he has no problem spending money and if Slats Sather feels a player (Gaborik, Richards) is worth the dough and fits the salary cap he always gets the green light to spend.

The NY Football Giants are owned by both the Mara and Tisch families but John Mara is the man who makes the decisions for the team.  Mara is what you want in a team owner, his family is football royalty, he has a presences in the league that is second only to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell , and he’s all about winning.

The Celtics are owned by a syndicate but the managing partner and NBA Governor is Wyc Grousbeck. Grousbeck has brought back the history and mystique of the Celtics. Just about every game at the TD Garden, there are numerous Celtics of the past attending the game.  I’ve mentioned before that I had the pleasure of meeting Grousbeck a few times at MSG and not only had great conversations with him but he even let me try on the 2008 Championship ring. Now that’s an owner. Which brings me to the Skill Sets.

No matter how bad a season any of those three teams have, I’ve always been confident that the ownership of those teams will pull out all stops to make the teams better. I never, ever get that feeling with the Wilpon’s.   Even when they were flush with In Bernie We Trust currency, I’ve never had confidence that they would just supply the resources to the men running the team to make baseball decisions that would make the Mets better.  It was never the Wilpon’s allowing the baseball people make baseball decision it was always, sure you can visit Player A to talk contract, but you have to take Jeff with you.  Now I cannot say for certain that the other owners I’ve named are not meddlesome (especially Dolan but he is more hands on with the Knicks than Rangers) but if they have it’s never been brought out like it has with Jeff Wilpon. Whether it was flying to meet Mike Cameron on the Mets private jet to get him to sign as a free agent, or being golf buddies with Tom Glavine and Al Leiter or just  forcing himself on the baseball operations when he had no baseball knowledge  what so ever.

With all the money woes the Wilpon’s have the one good thing has been that Sandy Alderson has run the baseball ops as he wants and with no money to spend ,Jeff has been a non-factor in player moves, which would be a positive if the Mets had money to spend.

Yesterday the Chicago Cubs signed RHP Andy Sonnestine and RHP Manny Corpas to non-guaranteed deals. The Mets with the lack of depth in the pitching department both on the big league and Triple A level should have been in on both these chuckers. I know neither Sonnestine nor Corpas are enough to really get Mets fans hot and bothered about but it just shows how the cash situation is so bad with the Mets that they can’t even bid on two arms like this.

The angst of the Mets fan is not towards the players or the front office; it’s all on the owners. Mets fans who decide to not go to Citi Field or watch games on SNY or buy Met merchandise will do so because of their anger at the Wilpon’s for not falling on the sword and doing the right thing by selling the team. No matter what happens on the field this coming season, this team will be followed by the Wilpon black cloud all season long unless the financial situation reaches to catastrophic proportions and Fred, Jeff and Uncle Saul are thrown out on their ass .  What sucks most of all, many Mets fans that I talk to don’t want to talk actual baseball, they all want to talk about the Wilpon’s selling the team. That is the number one subject on the Mets fans mind, not will Wright and Bay rebound or will Santana bounce back or will Ike have the breakout season, nope, it’s when the fuck are the Wilpon’s selling the team and that won’t end until the Skill Sets are gone. It’s shame for them , a shame for Mets fans and a shame for baseball.

It’s tough to spend time on Mets minutia today with trying to finish up loose ends at work and get ready for what should be one of the best nights Madison Square Garden has seen in quite a while as the Rangers and Flyers meet tonight and the Giants-Jets get together tomorrow and the Knicks-Celtics start the NBA season on Christmas, it’s hard to get worked up over Rob Johnson signing a minor league deal to fight for a backup catcher spot with the Mets .

I am pumped up for tonight’s Rangers-Flyers match up at MSG. Between the way the Rangers have been playing along with all the hype of HBO’s 24/7 (I need to tape Coach Tortorella’s between periods ass ripping of his team against the St Louis Blues last week  “Fucking screw it on straight, screw it on and let’s get ready to go each shift” has become my new mantra I’ve been using it at work all day the non-hockey fans think I’ve lost my mind but then again most of them don’t know what to make of me anyway)  and Winter Classic and first place (though very early in the season ) on the line, I can’t wait to get to the Garden tonight.

For as long as I can remember as a NY Football Giants fan, I have never given the NY Jets much thought. Sure I have friends who are Jets fans but there has never the animosity like I have with buddies and relatives who root for the Bronx Bastards. The Jets were…. Well just the Jets. They played in the other conference and since they played each other, except for every 4 years, only in the preseason there really hasn’t been any reason to have an opinion positive or negative on the Jets. Until now.

It really hurts me to write this but there are four teams in NYC that are sports royalty, The Highlanders, Giants, Knicks and Rangers. The Mets are the closest of the underling teams that could break into the big four, but not these days. For all the bluster that comes from Rex Ryan, the Jets are not close to being in the same stratosphere as the NY Football Giants. I don’t dislike Rex Ryan although he really, really needs to shut the fuck up, I do respect his coaching acumen but it’s too bad he has to take the personality of his dad Buddy because all this hot air he spews sooner or later has to be backed up with something. Sure he has had success as HC of the Jets but he needs to mind his coaching manners.

Head coaches, no matter what always show respect to one and other in public (look at the fall out from the Jim Schwatrz, Jim Haurbugh brew ha ha earlier this season) it’s great that Rex thinks that he is better that Bill Belichick or Tom Coughlin but when you disrespect these men who have accomplished more than you ever had in this game, you come off like a fucking buffoon.

Neither team in this contest has much to crow about this season. Both teams are huge disappointments with flaws a plenty and as much as Tom Coughlin has told his players to let the Jets do the talking and keep their mouths shut, when you have motor mouths like Antrell Rolle and Brandon Jacobs it’s a hard to rein them in.   

Like I say I never gave the Jets much thought but thanks to Rex’s big mouth not only do I want to see the Giants beat the living shit out them, if the Jets make the playoffs, I’ll be rooting hard against them. By the way, all Giants fan should be thanking Rex and his players for doing what Coach Coughlin has had trouble with so far this second half of the season, motivating the Giants players. Rex should have gone with the let sleeping dogs lay but after seeing how the Jets put a picture of a bleeding Eli Manning on the cover of their defensive play book, I hope JPP knocks Mark Sanchez out of the game on the first offensive play from scrimmage.   Oh and Fireman Ed is an asshole.

Celtics-Knicks is a great way to start off Christmas Day and as a fan of the C’s, it’s good to see the Knickerbockers relevant again. I am my Celtics have one more run left in them and a good start would be by beating up the Knicks on Sunday.

I’m sure many of you have read the stories concerning former Philadelphia Inquirer baseball writer Bill Conlin and the sickening accusation that he sexually abused children, some who were his niece and nephew, over 40 years ago. It’s so sad that these people have had to carry this burden around with them for all these years and now due to the statute of limitations, Conlin cannot be arrested and prosecuted for the alleged crime he committed which is a shame.    

I bring up Conlin here because I got an e mail to moderate a comment on this sight from a poster named Edgy DC who found a post I wrote here back in November 2007 about a feud I had with Conlin back then via e mail.  Check out the post from November 23, 2007 where I discussed with Conlin that a Phillies blogger wrote about how he felt David Wright was more deserving of the NL MVP award than Jimmy Rollins. The back and forth I have with Conlin is pretty comical but with the severity of the allegation against Conlin now, I feel bad I didn’t wait for outside Shea Stadium and beat the living shit out of him.

Well I just had to laugh

You know what I want for Christmas? Just one day of positive stories about the Mets. I just want to read that they are in final negotiation with a player that has potential to be the missing piece to making the team a serious pennant contender or that if you are thinking of going to a Mets game at Citi Field you better get your tickets now as it looks like every Mets game this summer will be a must see or that Baseball America has rated the New York Mets their Organization of the Year or that Kevin Burkhardt has been named as Howie Rose’ partner on the Mets games on WFAN More on that below). Just something I can smile about. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every morning I turn on my computer and say out loud, “Can’t wait to see what happy horseshit the Mets are up to today” it’s become my morning mantra. Well, today if Mets horseshit were dollar bills the Wilpon’s worries would be over.

First there was the story in the NY Times about what you get as a $20 mil minority investor in the NY Mets. I have to say after reading some of these “perks” I’m not rushing out to sell a kidney to raise cash to get these lucrative advantages of ownership:

Access to Mr. Met, the team mascot, although the degree of access is not entirely spelled out. It definitely means you, as a part-owner, can schmooze with Mr. Met at Citi Field. It’s less clear whether you could get him to come to your child’s birthday party without a fee.

I love Mr. Met but to tell you the truth he’s not a great conversationalist, he never has anything to say, kinda like Ed Coleman’s Mets Reports on WFAN

A formal business card, complete with the prominent designation: “Owner”.

Only if I can get a business card with a picture of me and Jeffey that says “I’m With Stupid”

And if you are a wealthy doctor, commodities trader or real estate mogul who wants to try to swat the ball over the newly pulled-in outfield fences at Citi Field on a Mets day off, you are entitled to attend what appears to be an exclusive kind of fantasy camp: “Owners’ workout day.”

Parking will not be a problem for new owners, the document makes clear. A single spot at the ballpark is reserved for anyone who signs on for $20 million. The chance to throw out a game’s first pitch will be an annual privilege. Every minority owner will be assigned a team executive, who will be charged with tending to an array of possible needs, season tickets for family members among them. The document suggests, however, that those tickets will cost money beyond the $20 million investment.

Parking is not problem for me now, the 7 train “parks” at the Willets Pt station and then picks me up at the same place after the game, for $4.50 round trip, such a bargain. An assigned team exec? No way, I want my own usher, in fact I want the fat usher with the long greasy hair in a ponytail in the field level who was telling everyone to leave after the final out of last game of the season just so I can fire the fucker. By the way as a minority owner can I fire and hire people? Forget throwing out the first pitch you can keep all the perks just give me that privilege and you have a deal.

Moving on, it looks like the reports of the Mets shutting down their Rookie League Kingsport team was erroneous; it’s the Gulf Coast Mets who play on the back fields of St. Lonesome that will be axed. Either way this is not good news and just proves that full blown bankruptcy for the Skill Sets is on the horizon as they nickel and dime their way as owners of NYC’s National League baseball team.  When you can’t afford to run a minor league team at the lowest level of pro ball it’s really a cry for help.

Pretty soon all they will close all the concession stands at Citi Field and every game will feature a Pot Luck Dinner. Bring your own plates and eating utensils too.

Word on the street is Wayne Hagin will not be back in Mets radio booth next season. Hagin is a nice guy but I won’t miss him and I doubt many other Mets fans will either, he just did not click with the fan base, a fan base I might add that is spoiled due to the great announcers of Mets games over the years (no not you Lorne Brown or you Steve Zabriski) the names being mentioned to replace Hagin are Sirrus/XM’s and former Mets GM Jim Duquette who is terrific on MLB Radio, Ed Coleman (thumbs down) Chris Carlin (no thank you) and Billy Sample ( no Mets or NY ties so no way)   but the man I nominate to work side by side with Howie Rose is Kevin Burkhardt. Burkhardt is currently the radio play by play voice of the Dallas Cowboys and has been with SNY covering the Mets as an in game reporter, studio host and play by play man as well.  With all due respect the gentlemen mention in the NY Post article for the job, Burkhardt’s name should be at the top of the list.

For some reason, I have centerfielders on my mind

All’s quiet in Flushing and according to Adam Rubin, it will stay quiet until the team meets in Port St. Lonsome. Seems the Mets are close to reaching their budget ceiling of $90Mil

The only thing that has me thinking the signing of Yu Darvish is a good move is that Nolan Ryan is running the Rangers  and if he didn’t think Darvish was worth it, the Rangers would never have bid over $50 mil to obtain his rights. Imagine having $50 mil to throw around just for a bid on a player? SIGH!  I miss those big market days    

Happy Birthday to David Wright who is 29 years old today and still a Met.  Rumor is he wanted a strawberry shortcake birthday cake but got a cherry filled cake instead #BlameBeltran

Mets Police has his released his Airing of Grievances today after giving out his awards for 2011 (The Mazzilli’s)

Frank Fransisco is officially a Mets after passing his physical two weeks after agreeing to a deal. The hold up was the club was trying to scrape together the co-pay.

The Arizona Diamondbacks signed Jason Kubel to a 2yr/$15 mil contract yesterday. This relegates Gerardo Parra, the 2011 Gold Glove winner, to fourth outfielder status. If I’m the GM of the Mets ( I just play a GM here on the internet) I am on the phone right now with Kevin Towers trying to find a way get Parra to the Mets to play center field.

I’m sure most Mets fans are like me when it comes to trying to make sense of the Mets finances in fact most fans talk about finances in pro sports  like it’s a penny ante poker game (what is team A offering $1.2 mil? You know what? Make our offer $2mil even, fans throw $850K around like its $8.50) So it was with great anticipation that I awaited Howard Megdal’s latest tome, “Wilpon’s Folly” (Bloomsbury USA) that not only gives a time line of the events and devastation that Bernie Madoff brought to the Skill Sets and to the Mets franchise but how much of this angst could have been avoid, if the Wilpon’s, specifically Saul Katz listened to confidants they were close to about the warning signs.

Megdal put in exhausting research into this book and gives Mets fans insight into the people who run our beloved New York Mets.  One of the main conclusions I took away with after reading Wilpon’s Folly’s is the Wilpon’s have a hard time taking good advice. They got some very good advice that could have protected themselves and their finances but chose to ignore the warning signs that Madoff was trouble, specifically Saul Katz whose own son, begged for him to diversify from Madoff but Saul Katz had bought into the Madoff way of business hook, line and sinker that has me wonder what goes on in Katz’ mind when he sits and reflects on this calamity.

As you read Wilpon’s Folly you just wonder where is the end game, when does it hit rock bottom for the Wilpon’s and what happens with the Mets when it does. Megdal comes up with a plan that makes sense and makes you wonder if someone close to the Wilpon’s would pitch to them in order to save whatever assets they can.

As much as Freddy Skill Sets wants to be Mets owner for life, that looks like a pipe dream and just goes to show you that Mets fans are “we-be’s” We be here when they got here and We be still here when they’re gone.

For everyone who says “why would Sandy Alderson even think about trading Jon Niese”? You got your answer yesterday when the San Diego Padres traded Matt Latos to the Cincinnati Reds for a cache of prime prospects.

The Reds see 2012 as their shot at winning the NL Central and putting together a pitching rotation that would stand up to the post season test so they took the big leap and dealt off four prize prospects,  Yonder Alonso, Edinson Volquez, Yasmani Grandal, and Brad Boxberger to add a pitcher they feel will put them thismuchcloser to being a pennant winner.

This brings us to Jon Niese and to Gio Gonzalez. Billy Beane saw the trend as did Sandy Alderson but Josh Byrnes was the first to act on it. We’ve been looking for the next undervalued commodity in baseball and we’ve found it, the twenty-something pitcher whose contract is under team control.  Beane and Alderson are in the same boat so to speak, they both can’t compete with the top teams in their division as presently put together and both have owners with money issues, although Beane is in a bit better spot than Alderson as his team with the help of the strong armed Bud Selig, could get their wish and get permission to move the A’s from the Black Hole of the Coliseum to San Jose, thats’ if the Giants show them the way (the Giants own the territorial rights so they do know the way to San Jose, a multi-million dollar check to waive those rights) any way back to Alderson and the Mets.

From hearing all the talk of Gonzalez being on the trade stroll and so many teams with large pockets and plentiful prospects to trade, Alderson and his staff decided to put Jon Niese’ name on the stroll as well. One ridiculous rumor was the Mets sending Niese to Colorado for 29 year old outfielder Seth Smith, please, that’s an Al Harazin kind of move and one I’m sure was let out after a few whiskeys and ryes by a guy who thinks he’s a cowboy, no if Alderson is going to trade Niese he’s going to get players who fill many of the voids the Mets have.

Alderson made it plain that the Mets catching situation is in dire need of an overhaul, not just at the major league level but organization wide. The club also needs help in adding prospects to its minor league system to accelerate the rebuilding (yes I used the “R” word) of the franchise into a contending team once again.

I can’t fault Mets fans when they get jumpy when they hear of a 25 year old pitcher being shopped as we have seen so many Mets GM’s get fleeced in the past but I’m pretty confident that if Niese is dealt it will be to a contending team or one just on the cusp and views Niese as a missing piece and is willing to pay a big premium to get to the promised land.

It’s a win-win for the Mets, Niese is dealt to fill multiple spots or he stays and becomes a solid major league pitcher. It’s not often I used the phrase Win-Win when discussing the Mets.
