Every year as a member of the Baseball Bloggers Alliance (BBA) I have a vote for the Alliance’ awards. Each member of the BBA gets a vote and the BBA will announce the winners next month. So without further ado here are my picks for the National League season awards:
Connie Mack Award (Manager of the Year) Don Mattingly
On June 20th, the LA Dodgers were 11 games under .500 (30-41) and team president Stan Kasten in a sit down with Don Mattingly said they club was thinking about making a change in manager. From that day to the end of the season the Dodgers went 62-29 and a NL West Division title.
Willie Mays Award (Rookie of the Year) Jose Fernandez
So many fine candidates to choose from, Dodger teammates Yasiel Puig and Hyun-Jin-Ryu, Cardinals teammates Trevor Rosenthal and Shelby Miller all worthy of the award but after a lot of thought and going back and forth, my vote for this award goes to Jose Fernandez RHP for the Miami Marlins.
Goose Gossage Award (Reliever of the Year) Craig Kimbrel
Another tough choice although Kimbrel’s 50 saves was the deciding factor in my vote. Kenley Jansen, Steve Cishek, Trevor Rosenthal and Mark Melancon were all in the mix for my vote.
Walter Johnson Award (Pitcher of the Year) Clayton Kershaw
Kershaw or Adam Wainwright, Wainwright or Kershaw ? Kershaw’ 1.83 ERA got him my vote.
Stan Musial Award (Player of the Year) Andrew McCutchen
Another tough ballot to cast. Paul Goldschmidt would be more than worthy of my vote but I leaned toward McCutchen because of his play in centerfield and his contribution to the resurgence of the Pirates.
