I Leave For A Half Hour and Stuff Happens In Flushing

Seems this play is the root of Johan Santana’s problems and will force him to the DL “Paging Matt Harvey, Mr. Matt Harvey…………”

I think we all agree that there is something not right with Johan Santana, the question is what’s wrong?

It doesn’t seem it’s a physical problem as Santana said he feels fine but know Johan, he’ll tell you he’s fine as the prep him for surgery, but again I don’t think this is a physical problem. It could be he has hit a wall. Being that Santana has said he has lost the feel for his pitches and it shows in his lack of command. Some are pointing to the no hitter of June 1st and the subsequent handling of Santana by the Mets after that, I guess that’s the easy way to look at and as we all know the favorite past time of Mets beat writers is to point their mocking fingers at the Mets.  The problem with Johan could simply be that after missing a year of pitching, he’s tired.

What would be the crime of putting Santana on the DL where he’ll miss two starts and then bring him back with limited innings or pitches? If Santana’s problems are fatigue and not structural, then the Mets are ahead of the game, beside we’re all dying to see Matt Harvey pitch aren’t we?

(UPDATE: while I was out checking the field at SI Tech to make sure it was in game shape for our 3PM playoff game , I come back to find out Santana has been placed on the DL due to the ankle injury he suffered that made him use more arm that lower body while pitching hence a fatigued arm. Carry on)

Jeremy Hefner has been recalled for today’s game as a safety net for Miguel Batista so that means someone has got to go and that someone looks to be Kirk Nieuwenhuis. It makes sense for Kirk to go to Buffalo since  he has slumped to the point Terry Collins would rather go with Andres Torres than him and when Nieuwenhuis did play he was striking out at an alarming rate. Kirk seems to have a good head on his shoulders and a trip to Buffalo won’t devastate him, I’m sure he’ll work on his game and will be back in the big leagues soon.(UPDATE PART 2 Looks Kirk gets reprieve from Buffalo with Johan on DL wish the Mets would have done this sooner and saved me the time it took to do this post)  With that said if I’m Sandy Alderson I’d have released Andres Torres and that might just happen when Mike Baxter gets back. If Baxter when healthy, is not brought right up to Queens there will be hell to pay believe me.

TIME FOR AN OLIVER PEREZ NEWS BLACKOUT

My God, it’s day one of pitchers and catcher reporting to St Lonesome and I’m already sick of the Ollie Perez stories.

Perez came to camp and proclaimed he wanted to compete for a starting spot in the Mets rotation.  The Mets plan for Perez was to compete with Tim Byrdak, Mike O’Conner, and Taylor Tankersley for the role of LOOGY in the Alderson/Collins production. But OP had other plans when he had his sit down with the GM and manager letting them know he wants a shot at the two spots up for grabs.

Odds are long that Perez is going to out pitch Chris Capuano, Dillon Gee or Chris Young and Terry Collins is concerned about his mind set which shows some nativity on Collins part as no one, not even Perez  knows what’s going on in that noggin.

What hurts Perez is of course his inability to throw strikes and that’s due to some of the worst mechanics this side of the constantly out of service escalator at the South Ferry subway station.  Perez is full of bad habits, awful arm angle on release, bad balance in his delivery and not really understanding how to pitch. Perez is a classic thrower. Add in two straight years of constant nagging injuries and hard headedness you wonder, why bother with this guy? All these deficiencies lead to the bane of Perez’ problem,  his command and control is awful  which lead to base on balls which lead to loads of base runners, base runners who wind up touching home plate at an alarming rate.

The fans can’t stand the sight of him and they’re not wrong. If OP would have taken management’s advice and agreed to accept a minor league assignment to work out his problems, the fan base would be much more sympathetic and in fact I bet those fans who are repulsed by Perez would rally behind him.  But Perez in essence told the Mets management and fans “Fuck You” and the fans responded with “Fuck Me”? No. “Fuck You”

It would a major upset and disappointment if Perez makes the 25 man roster. I don’t think he will, in fact he’ s only around because he’s not drawing a paycheck yet for 2011 (players don’t start getting paid until opening day they get per diem during spring) as once he does I’m sure it will be as a former Met.

IT WAS GENERAL TSO’S CHICKEN BY KNOCKOUT

We have this new system at work to sign in and out via computer and you have to be on time as the punch in clock is no joke,  so since I like to walk from the ferry to work every day (about a mile) I’ve been getting up at 5:15 in the AM. Then last night, since my  kids had  a couple of after school activities, by the time my wife drives them and picks them up it usually means it’s a take out night so last night was Chinese. Now add  those two elements  to watching the World Series in a reclining chair, I have to come clean and say I saw about three innings of last nights game before I was comatose. If it wasn’t for the cat looking for a late night snack and sitting on my head I might still be sleeping but I woke up in time to hear Doofus Joe tell me not to forget to join him and Mc Fullofshit on Saturday for Game 3.

So what did I miss? Well the Phillies taking a page out of the Mets book of failure by leaving ducks on the pond at an alarming rate. BIG GAME James doing another fine job. Rocco Baldeli slamming into Carlos Ruiz at the plate and the next inning resting on one knee during play stoppage as he fights fatigue; something that has ailed him all season and I missed the biggest story of the post season David Price’s coming out party.

We are supposed to go out for dinner on Saturday night so I’ll be sure to stop off at Starbucks on the way home for some high octain java to keep me awake for Game 3.

I’m pretty happy with the configuration of the new Mets coaching staff. I like Randy Niemann in the bullpen and with the departure of Guy Conti that closes the book on Petey’s return. I think the tandem of Neiman/Warthem will be a real plus for the Mets. The Alomars, and HOJO coming back is good news as well. Luis Aguyo goes back to player personnel as he was sorely miscast as a 3rd base coach and  I feel sorry for Ken Oberkfell who looks to be re-assigned to manage the Buffalo Bisons after making it up to the big club. As for Razor Shines, he’s a J-Man ally which helps out the Warlord and he managed in the bushes so he gets a chance to command the third base coach’s box but I think more importantly he gives J-Man and sounding board.

All the speculation about which way Omar will go to reconstruct the Mets for ’09 is giving me a head ache already.  Obviously the most important add/subtract is in the pen. Next is a back of  the rotation starter, then 2nd base (I’m a supporter of signing Orlando Hudson ) then the corner outfielders ( It’s not all his fault due to the concussions but the Milledge/Church-Schnieder deal sure doesn’t look like a steal now does it?) and then I’d bring in a new first string catcher. My first call would be to Ken Williams on the South Side and ask about AJ Pierzynski (I know I’ve gone over this earlier) and Bobby Jenks.  Make a package of Schenider/Heilman/Castilo/  and cash to pay the bulk of Gimps contract for the pair of Sox.

Randy Newsom is a minor leaguer playing winter ball in Venezuela and he writes about his experiences there on Dugout Central. It’s a worth while read.

Ron Darling will join Mike the Bloviator as guest listener as no one but the Great Bloviator gets to speak on his show. Yesterday Francesa went into a rant condemning Congressman Dennis Kucinich for looking into allegations that the Highlanders and the City of NY of undervaluing the value of the land the new Highlander Stadium is built on to pay less property tax. Francesa threw a fit questioning Kucinich for sticking his nose into this and saying who cares what the Highlanders and the City did to get this stadium built. So in the world of Mike Francesa, rich people cheating the government out of tax revenue is fine and anyone who questions it is a commie rat bastard. Spoken like a true Republican that he is.

Big League Stew has a post on what to do with Doofus Joe and Tim McFullofshit as now it seems the rest of the blogesphre is finally hip to what I’ve been saying for a few years not only does has this duo reached the peak of suckitude and in the case of Doofus Joe, become so disinterested in broadcasting baseball that it looks like it’s time to for both to step away from the broadcast booth. I think this will be the last of these two smug assholes after the World Series I’d be shocked, SHOCKED if FOX didn’t shakeup its awful baseball coverage.

More on the shake down of the Cape Cod League by MLB Properties this from the New York Times. Looks like my Chatham Athletics t-shirt, cap and sweatshirt are collector’s items.

Mike Silva plays the “Hate Card” with the Mets and their rivals. Hey, Mike the fan base ain’t exactly in love with the team either. Not me though, I usually keep a level head when it comes to the Mets <whoa, that lighting bolt nearly hit me!>
