METS PITCHING STAFF, ADD 2 SUBTRACT 1

The Mets announced this evening that they have signed LHP Chris Capuano and RHP Taylor Buchholz to 1 year contracts, and to make room on the 40 man roster they have released P Ryota Igarashi.

Cutting Igarashi is a surprised but adding Capuano and Buchholz, who both battle arm problems (Capuano is a two-time Tommy John surgery patient)  both fall under the low risk/high reward mantle.

Capuano will most likely compete for the 4/5 spot in the rotation. If (and it’s a big if) Capuano is of sound shoulder and body, he could be this years version of R.A. Dickey. Capuano did show some increase in velocity last season when he joined the Brewers after rehab assignment but he is not a power pitcher. His best pitch is his change and he incorporates a cutter as well.  When he’s on his game, Capuano will induce more ground balls than fly balls.

Buchholz is also a Tommy John-er with his surgery coming in 2009. Buchholz is a fly ball pitcher which fits very nicely in Citi Field.

So with the new year under way two low cost gambles by Sandy Alderson have arrived. I like the Capuano signing alot. Of course everything with Cap hinges on his arm being sound and if it is ,this move could pay off handsomely for Alderson. As for Buchholz, I’ll wait and see .

PRO BASEBALL CENTRAL TUESDAY DECEMBER 23

If you missed our live broadcast of Pro Baseball Central,  you missed a discussion of the Highlanders signing Mark Teixiera and and another spirited debate on the Mets going after Derek Lowe and/or Oliver Perez. Joe McDonald and I were joined by Mike Silva of NY Baseball Digest and after a some good baseball discussion we went off on a tangent going over drinking establishments in Bay Ridge and a travelogue of Ireland and alot of other silliness. To figure out the meaning of the picture with this post you have to listen to the show and believe me it will be worth it.

I’M SO THANKFUL I’M NOT A J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS FAN

Most people I meet assume that I am a JETS fan because I’m a METS fan so I guess they figure since my summers get ruined they assume I enjoy fucked up winters as well. No way as my pro football team of choice is of course The New York Football Giants and after watching the J-E-T-S pull a 2007 Mets like gag I wonder how long it would take me to suck the gas pipe if I were a Jets/Mets fan.

I know there a alot of you out there afflicted with Jets/Mets and I feel for you guys I really do but don’t worry come April the Mets will start a new season and from what I know of the J-E-T-S they thrive in April at the NFL Draft.

Remember in the words of Felix Unger, never assume as you make an ass out of u and me.

I’M SLOWLY TURNING INTO YOU

Then something else came to mind

That was the mirror

It made everything clearer

That you’re more beautiful compelling and stronger

It didn’t take much longer

Just for me to realize I love all the little things

And the beauty that they’re gonna bring

I dig your little laugh and I’m lovin’ your quick wit

I even love it when you’re faking it

And it might sound a little strange for me to say to you

But I’m proud to be you

And I’m slowly turning into you

And I’m slowly turning into you

And I’m slowly turning into you

And I’m slowly turning into you

The more I see of $iti Field the more I’m coming around to the fact that this will be at least from a structural point, a baseball palace.  From looking at the pictures that Joe McDonald took while on a tour of the new ballpark the first thing that strikes me is the Jackie Robinson Rotunda. It is magnificent. I know there is alot of anti-Brooklyn Dodgers sentiment among Mets fans and the naming and the reproduction of the Ebbets Field rotunda of $iti Field has been debated as some segment of Mets fans feel the Mets should honor their own and other part of the fans base wants the New York Giants/Polo Ground element to be added and both sides make fine arguments but to bash the design of the ball park and to be upset that the rotunda is named after Jackie Robinson is ridiculous in my view. In fact I wanted the ball park named after Robinson but I know that is just a pipe dream.

Any way not just the rotunda is breath taking up the view from the section show that Mets fans will have that up close and personal feel and be right on top of the action. I also LOVE the forest green seats which will give the park that old time feel.

Maybe it’s the cold weather and wishing it was 80 degrees and sunny or maybe it’s the Rangers getting the ass handed to them last night by Les Habitants that has me getting antsy for spring training and then opening day at the new place. (We have to come up with a better name though as I’m still going to use $iti Field so if you have any suggestions for me pass them along through the comments or e-mail sinymets@aol.com )
