I’m Still With 28

So Daniel Murphy has a rough couple of games and some so called Mets fans have turned on him. There are times, and this in one of those times, that this fan base deserved to treated like shit by the likes of Bobby Bonnila, Jeff Kent and the immortal Richie Hebner.

Murph had a bad game last night; for sure in fact he said it himself after the game as he faced the media. There is no run and hide in Murphy he acknowledged his bad play at 2nd base last night and addressed the fielding problems the Mets have had most of the season and he took the first shot at himself:

“You don’t have to look any farther than this locker here where to start with some of our poor play the last couple of days. It starts right here.”

Before last night, the jackals were quiet but with a two error game coming on the heels of an 0-14 offensive bump in the road, the Murphy detractors have come out in full force, none more prominent than the wanna-be Mike Francesa’s Mark Malusis and Sal Licata two of the many uniformed and untalented talking shit heads on SNY.

Before last night, there was no one taking Murphy to task about his fielding, in fact Keith Hernandez who may be a bit more qualified that a stooge like Licata, has praised the work Murph has put in with Tim Teufel to make himself into a serviceable second baseman.  It’s more sad than funny how the Murphy bashers go on and on about his defensive deficiencies but never talk about the hours of hard work Murph puts in to make himself better, see in order to observe this, you would have to get out to the ball park early and watch Murph take ground ball after ground ball but of course that would take commitment to your craft which many TV and sports talk radio nimrods in this town lack in spades.  Maybe if Licatta worked as hard at his job like Murph does he’d still be employed at WFAN.

We all know that Murphy can hit, in fact his bat with RISP has been a solid .333/.369/.433 so far this year and when its 2outs/RISP Murph raises his game to .391/.440/.522 and is one of the main reasons the Mets have played above many expectations.

Maybe it’s good that many so called Mets fans can forget the malcontents and lazy asses that paraded on the Shea Stadium field back in the 90’s.  For all you so called Mets enthusiast who are calling for the Mets to deal Murph I have a better idea one that would make us both very happy, GO ROOT FOR ANOTHER TEAM!

THE CO-EXISTENCE OF HIGHLANDERS/GIANTS AND METS/GIANTS FANS

It’s not unusual to have friends and family members with different sports rooting interest as you, I have many friends and relatives who root for the Highlanders, Knicks and the Jets,  even a couple of Devils, Islanders and Nets fans thrown in the mix as well. This week the Giants fan contingent of my inner circle have been in constant contact about what to expect from our Giants tomorrow as they take on the Patriots in Super Bowl 42 and what is fascinating  is how the dominant fan gene takes hold when we discuss the game.

The Highlander/Giants fans of the group are so super confident that the Giants will win, it has the Mets/Giants fan breaking out in a cold sweat. Highlander/Giants says the Giants front four will dominate and that between Justin Tuck and JPP, Tom Brady will be leaving Indianapolis with a toe tag on his man Uggs. Mets/Giants says “it’s Tom Fuckin’ Brady” and he not only has a score to settle with the Giants for Super Bowl 42 and he also played like shit in the AFC Championship game to where he vowed to Pats owner, Bob Kraft he feels he let him and the organization down. Mets/Giants is nervous because he fears Brady’s A game. Highlander/Giants says “Fuck Brady’s A game”.

Highlander/Giants says “ancient history “ when Mets/Giants brings up the team was 7-7 late in the season and how the  Redskins loss in Week 15 is still on my mind. Highlander/Giants then says “that was the last time the G-Men lost, they are on a 5 game winning streak looking better each time out” That when Mets/Giants says “that’s what worries me, the team is due for a bad game and a loss”, to which Highlander/Giants says “I swear to God I don’t know why I’m friends with you (Highlander/Giants family member give me the old you can pick your friends and not your relatives response)and if that wasn’t enough cruelty, Highlander/Giants pours salt in the wound by adding “and you dwell on negative shit forever, Jimmy Qualls, Mike Scioscia, Yadier Molina, Adam Wainwright….move the fuck on already”

I can’t help it. Fans of multiple sports teams have a dominant sports fan gene, mine happens to be the Mets fan gene.  See the Giants fan gene I have is strong when it comes to history and loyalty with pride in winning as well. The Giants have won 7 Championships (4 pre-Super Bowl NFL Titles and 3 Lombardi Trophies) same with the Boston Celtics gene that also adds arrogance from our late leader the Great Red Auerbach.  The NY Ranger fan gene runs close to the Mets fan gene in that the Ranger fan gene reacts to overpriced free agent flops and overall anger and disappointment with the team and management.

So as I get ready for tomorrows Super Bowl, a Super Bowl I will watch at a GIANTS FANS ONLY party that will feature more Mets/Giants than Highlander/Giants, my hope is that Highlander/Giants doesn’t keep up their rhetoric during the pre-game dinner as I would hate to sit down to a meal with my hands over my ears yelling “I CAN’T HEAR YOU! I CAN’T HEAR YOU! I CAN’T HEAR YOU!!!!

ANOTHER INSTINCTIVELY BAD GAME BY THE NY METS

So the doctors said David Wright could resume baseball activity in six weeks. The Mets thought that meant six weeks from the time the injury occurred. But the doctors say no, six weeks from the time of the diagnosis. What we have here is a breakdown of  communication  (just like in season’s past which was supposed to end with Sandy Alderson as boss) or Alderson was using Abbot and Costello math.

Either way when the worst news of the night isn’t the fact that  the team has become the first team in the history of MLB to lose six games at home while having a lead after seven innings but that your nice kid somewhat of a superstar third baseman has suffered the first major injury of his career and won’t be back until maybe after the All-Star break well, “you’re snake bitten baby”

Gary Cohen said last night, there are reasons the Mets blow these leads late in the game and it’s the difference between good teams and bad teams. It may be a cliché but it’s true the little mistakes add up to turn wins into losses. Whether it’s Daniel Murphy’ lack of instinct on the base paths, or Izzy coming in a game with two outs and walking a struggling Dan Uggla, Josh Thole unable to stop a pitch in the dirt (again) and Jose Reyes picking the worst time ever to make an error, it all adds up to failure.

Terry Collins was quite calm after the game. Maybe he’s come to the realization there are some things a manger can’t dictate,  like instinct .
