Cialis refractory With a blessing from Cooperstown, cialis refractory Foley’s, cialis refractory a popular destination among baseball players, cialis refractory executives, cialis refractory umpires, cialis refractory media and fans, cialis refractory created the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame to recognize players, cialis refractory managers, cialis refractory executives, cialis refractory journalists, cialis refractory and entertainers.  Inductees are chosen based on a combination of four factors: impact on the game, cialis refractory popularity on and off the field, cialis refractory contributions to society, cialis refractory and ancestry/connections to the Irish community.  The 2010 honorees are:

Cialis refractory 1.     Tim McCarver (Former Player/Broadcaster)

Cialis refractory Born in Memphis , cialis refractory TN , cialis refractory Tim McCarver signed with the St. Cialis refractory Louis Cardinals right out of Christian Brothers High School and was a two-time All-Star selection (1966, cialis refractory 1967) and World Series champion (1964, cialis refractory 1967).  During a career that spanned from 1959 until 1980, cialis refractory McCarver also played for the Phillies, cialis refractory Expos and Red Sox.  He was the favorite catcher for two Hall of Fame pitchers: Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton.

Cialis refractory After retiring as a player, cialis refractory McCarver became a six-time Emmy-winning broadcaster.  He has called games for the Phillies (1980-82), cialis refractory Mets (1983-98), cialis refractory Yankees (1999-2001), cialis refractory and Giants (2002). Cialis refractory  Beginning with the 1985 Fall Classic, cialis refractory Tim McCarver has provided color commentary for more World Series games on TV than any other announcer in history.  He is frequently paired with Joe Buck as the lead team on FOX network broadcasts and also hosts The Tim McCarver Show, cialis refractory a nationally syndicated interview program now in its ninth season.

Cialis refractory 2.     Brian Cashman (Executive)

Cialis refractory A native of Rockville Center , cialis refractory NY , cialis refractory Brian Cashman began his career with the New York Yankees as an intern in 1986.  He moved up the ranks and eventually succeeded Bob Watson as General Manager in 1998.  During Cashman’s tenure as GM, cialis refractory the Yankees have won six AL pennants and four World Series championships (1998-2000 and 2009). Cialis refractory  Brian Cashman graduated from Georgetown Prep in 1985 and The Catholic University of America in 1989.  He lives in Connecticut with his wife and two children. Cialis refractory

Cialis refractory 3.     Bill James (Executive)

Cialis refractory Born in Holton , cialis refractory KS , cialis refractory Bill James has authored more than two dozen books on baseball history and statistics.  He coined the term “sabermetrics” for his innovative statistical analysis of player performances. Cialis refractory  James’ statistical measures gained widespread acceptance when Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane applied sabermetric principles in running his low-budget, cialis refractory small market team (chronicled in Michael Lewis’ bestseller Moneyball). Cialis refractory  In 2003, cialis refractory James became a senior advisor for the Boston Red Sox and is credited with advocating moves such as the team’s emphasis on on-base percentage. Cialis refractory  Bill James is a Viet Nam era veteran, cialis refractory a graduate of the University of Kansas , cialis refractory and was one of TIME magazine’s “Time 100” most influential people in 2006.  He is proud of his predominantly Irish heritage with grandparents named Burks, cialis refractory Yates, cialis refractory McCool and James.

Cialis refractory 4.     Bob Murphy, cialis refractory (Broadcaster)

Cialis refractory A transplanted Oklahoman, cialis refractory Bob Murphy was a TV and radio announcer for the New York Mets from their inception until his retirement in 2003. Cialis refractory  Beloved for his sunny disposition and “happy recaps” of Mets’ victories, cialis refractory he and colleagues Lindsey Nelson and Ralph Kiner described both the ineptitude of the 1962 Amazin’s and the ecstasy of the 1969 World Series.  From 1978 onward, cialis refractory Murphy served primarily as the Mets’ radio voice.  He welcomed fans to the team’s first game and called the thrilling post-season wins in ‘69 and ‘86.  Bob Murphy received the prestigious Ford C. Cialis refractory Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame and is a member of the New York Mets Hall of Fame.  He died of lung cancer in 2004.

Cialis refractory 5.     Mike “King” Kelly (Hall of Famer/Legend)

Cialis refractory Widely regarded as the game’s first superstar, cialis refractory Mike “King” Kelly was a colorful catcher, cialis refractory outfielder and manager. Cialis refractory  Born in Troy , cialis refractory NY , cialis refractory to Famine immigrants and raised in Paterson , cialis refractory NJ , cialis refractory Kelly’s baseball skill and Irish charm made him one of America ‘s first sports celebrities.  He was the subject of a hit song, cialis refractory Slide Kelly, cialis refractory Slide, cialis refractory and a Vaudeville star. Cialis refractory  A two-time batting champion and daring base runner, cialis refractory historians credit Kelly with developing the hit-and-run, cialis refractory the hook slide, cialis refractory and the catcher’s practice of backing up first base.  However, cialis refractory his greatest contribution was the popularity he brought to the game in the 1880s and ‘90s.  He was the first player to sign autographs, cialis refractory the first to publish his autobiography, cialis refractory and his trade from Chicago to Boston for $10, cialis refractory000 was one of the biggest deals in early baseball history (thus solidifying baseball as a business).  King Kelly was elected posthumously to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945.

Cialis refractory The game of baseball has long welcomed immigrants from its earliest days, cialis refractory when an estimated 30 percent of players claimed Irish heritage.  Many of the game’s biggest stars at the turn of the 20th century were Irish immigrants or their descendants, cialis refractory including Michael “King” Kelly, cialis refractory Roger Connor (the home run king before Babe Ruth), cialis refractory Eddie Collins, cialis refractory Big Ed Walsh and NY Giants manager John McGraw. Cialis refractory  Today, cialis refractory major league teams regularly sign players born in Latin America, cialis refractory Japan , cialis refractory Canada , cialis refractory and elsewhere.

Cialis refractory Shaun Clancy, cialis refractory an amateur baseball historian, cialis refractory created the Hall after learning about the rich heritage of Irish Americans in the sport dating from its infancy – a legacy that has been overshadowed in recent years by other ethnicities.  He decided to celebrate his roots and those who helped make the game great by creating a shrine to Irish Americans in baseball in 2008.
