I’m SHOCKED That Mets Are SHOCKED That Jason Bay Is Still A Met

There is a growing segment of the Mets fan base that have quite the thick craniums, they have a problem of figuring out fact from fiction and if they are not directly told the facts about something they have a tough time comprehending events that go on in the Mets front office.

Terry Collins is Jason Bay’s Kevlar vest; question after question to Collins at his press conferences deal with answering questions about Bay and the bullpen but now Bay is the beat the dead horse subject of the week. Collins has tried and tried to resuscitate Bay’s offensive game even though it flat lined a long time ago. From where I sit, I can see the baseball ops folks telling Collins it’s time to cut bait on Bay but Collins asked for more time with the front office saying Bay has the end of the road trip to show a pulse or he’s done.

Back from a 6-5 trip Collins was met at the door by Sandy Alderson with his hand up saying here is how we will deal with Jason Bay, he will now play against left handed pitching only. No discussion.  Now fast forward to the afternoon and the quote by Alderson pertaining to Bay:

“Certainly, there are times when it is appropriate to eat a contract; there are other times when it is not. Jason Bay is not going anywhere, nor is his contract.”

Does that mean you will see Jason Bay in LF for the Mets in 2013?  Of course not. As Alderson stated there are times to eat a contract when it’s appropriate, on August 8th it’s not the time to chow down on dead presidents. Why would you? The plan going forward is to platoon Bay with Jordany Valdespin in left and I’d guess Mike Baxter and Scott Hairston will spilt the time on right, which is the best game plan available right now.

If you are a Mets fan who wants Jason Bay out of town, you had better root hard that he shows some ability to produce some offense against left handed pitching so it makes him a more attractive trade chip.

So today Alderson explains that Bay is still a Met and will be a Met for the rest of the season, he will try hard to deal Bay to save some Skill Sets cash but please don’t tell me you are that naive to think that plan C, buying out Bay’s contract has not been discussed. You don’t believe the GM should tell you today “yeah Bay looks done as Sunday dinner and no one is ringing my phone to obtain him. Can you blame them? Yup we are up the creek without a paddle”

Do not be shocked and dismayed if Bay reports to St. Lonesome in February if he’s not dealt its part of the plan but I would bet Jason Bay won’t be on the opening day roster in 2013.

HAPPY HOCKEY DAY IN AMERICA

NY Ranger Royalty

Today for some reason is called Hockey Day in America and NBC is airing three early afternoon games and Versus gets the Heritage Classic, an outdoor games between the Montreal Canadians and the Calgary Flames  in Calgary (wait, Hockey Day in AMERICA and the headline game is being played in CALGARY, ALBERTA CANADA?) so to make my contribution to the day, I’m off to MSG for what could be a old time slobberknocker between the NY Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers. I will also stop into the Tim Horton’s in Penn Station for an apple fritter and coffee eh?

Alright all together now, “Oh the good old hockey game, is the best game you can name, and the best game you can name is  the good old hockey game”…………….everybody “oh the good old hockey game……………

EXCUSE ME JERRY, MAY I INTRODUCE YOU TO BOBBY PARNELL

It’s not the loss that has me pissed, it the way it happened that makes me wonder if under the stewardship on Mr. Jerry Manuel, this team can make the post season as the manager has absolutely no feel for in game managing.

First there was the lineup. With both Jose Reyes and Angel Pagan ailing, was it wise to give Jason Bay the day off? I’ve advocated giving Chris Carter some playing time but again the manager has to have a feel for knowing when to play guys and when to let them sit, you can’t keep Bay out the line up when your two offensive catalysts are sitting. Wouldn’t giving Bay a game off in Puerto Rico be more beneficial since he wouldn’t have to run on an artificial turf laded outfield?

Then we have this whole “I wanted to get Johan out on a positive note” line of bullshit? Santana pitched his best game in over a month and not just that he is still the Ace of the staff. Maybe it’s just a figurehead title but can you imagine Roy Halladay, Tim Lincecum, CC Sabathia or Cliff Lee coming out of a game like last night? I know Johan said he wanted to stay in the game but acquiesced to the managers move, maybe he should have demanded to stay in I bet those pitchers I mentioned would get into a fist fight with their skipper to finish a game like that.

The 9th inning was just a pure disaster as Manuel let Ryota Igarashi, a guy who walks as many batters as he strikes out, pitch in bases loaded spot one out and Ryan Zimmerman up. I can buy the notion of saving Frankie Rodriguez for the save spot as the Mets are the road team, but if you’re not going to use Bobby Parnell in that spot, then why is Parnell here?

You could hear the disgust in Ron Darling’ voice as Igarashi fell behind 2-0 to Zimmerman by throwing tow breaking balls, when the situation called for challenging the hitter with fastballs. That’s why this situation cried out for Parnell to be brought in. If Zim hits a 98 mph fastball for a game winning hit, tip your hat and move on. I just wonder if Igarashi would have walked in the winning run, would that be grounds for the manager’s dismissal?
