Bye Bye Bay-by, Bay-by Good Bye !

So Mets fans are you happy now? We all wanted to be rid of Jason Bay and his unproductive bat and Debbie Downer body language and the Mets have granted us that request. The club sat down with Bay and worked out a deal where Bay gets the full $21 mil he’s owed on his contract. It looks like the club and Bay have structured a deal where some of the $21 mil is deferred, how much that helps the team this off season remains to be seen.

I think by now it’s clear that Sandy Alderson does not deal in emotions when it comes to this team.  We saw it last off season when after approaching  Jose Reyes’ agent during the season to talk contract extension and was told that Reyes would rather test the free agent waters. When the season was over Reyes’ handlers wanted the Mets to make an offer and were told by Alderson that he was not about to set the market price and it would be in Reyes’ best interest to get an offer and get back to him. They did with the only offer out there from the Marlins of 6 years and $106 mil, to which Alderson said, “enjoy South Beach”. It was the right move.

As we have seen with Luis Castillo, Oliver Perez and D.J. Carrasco, Alderson has no problem approaching the Skill Sets with the recommendation of eating salary. Even with all the red ink flooding Citi Field, the move was still made to eat Bay’s remaining contract however it is structured is a positive move.

NY METS NEWS AND VIEWS

NEWS: Terry Collins Upset That Ruben Tejada Is Not In Camp

I am with TC 100 %, don’t give me this “he’s not late” line of horseshit, that’s for losers. You same Mets fans who bitch and moan that Collins has some nerve calling out Tejeda are the same bunch who is spouting the Mets suck mantra. You can’t have it both ways folks.

I’m sure Collins made it known to Tejeda that it would be in his best interest to get to camp early to work with Daniel Murphy his news keystone partner.  I don’t want to hear visa problems as the reason Tejada couldn’t get to camp early, take care of your shit on time Ruben.  No excuses and to all of you comparing Collins to NY Giants coach Tom Coughlin and his insistence that if you’re on time your five minutes late, let’s hope TC gets the same results two championships in four years.

MURPHY HOW COULD YOU?

The Murph givith, the Murph takith away. Looks like I missed another Adventures in Fielding with Daniel Murphy last night as he took a wee bit to long to throw to Ginger Turner covering 1st base to get Dwayne Wise over running the bag. The play set up Izzy pitching to Mike Stanton who in turn hit a grand slam to help the Fish to a 7-3 win.

There is no defending Murphy on that play, it is baseball fundamentals 101. Terry Collins you know is not happy with what Murph does on the field but he has his player’s back as he took Murphy to task but complimented him on how he never makes the same mistake twice. No, he usually moves on to the next mistake on the field.

As much as I love Murphy, something’s gotta give with his lack of baseball instincts as noble as it is for the manager to protect him in the media, there comes a time when that becomes insulting to the fans and the folks covering the team. You can protect a guy for so long then your creditability comes into play.

I see from The Mets PO-PO that Wayne Hagin has become a “we-be” as being a homer. If Howie Rose and Gary Cohen can stay above that as they are cut from the same orange and blue cloth as us, it would be in Hagin’s best interest to do the same. By the way where was Howie? Out voting to keep the Icelanders in Uniondale?

Speaking of the Icelanders, now what Mr. Wang? The voters have spoken and by the way, what a strange time to have a vote on such an important referendum, the first Monday in August when folks are on vacation and doing many summertime activities. So what becomes of the Icelanders? Wang has said he would be done with the team that he loses millions on each year without the new arena so are we looking at a reincarnation of the Brooklyn Americans?

DO THE SKILL SETS HAVE ANY SHAME?

I don’t know maybe I think a little differently than some folks. If me and my family were embroiled in a fight to save everything we’ve worked for and the embarrassment we’ve faced due to either stupidity, nativity or out right lying and I owned a baseball team in the biggest media market in the world, I’d kind of lay low for a while and not want to have to answer questions about an on going court case that I really can’t answer or baseball questions that I don’t know how to answer. I’d stay out of the public eye. Unfortunately Jeffey Skill Sets doesn’t think like that.  Here was Jeffey in all his glory and bad hair cut meeting the media at St. Lonesome.

Wouldn’t it be in the best interest of the organization to not have a side show on the day pitchers and catchers report? Especially when you are having a tough time selling tickets? Wouldn’t be in the best interest of the organization to just let Sandy Alderson do the talking this spring and season as well?

Just when I’m getting stoked for Mets baseball and decided to purchase a flex pack ticket plan, I see this video and think hummmmmmmmmm is buying a ticket plan a wise choice? I’m sure I’m not they only one who is thinking this way as well.

Besides Jeffey being there do I have to hear about our domestic violence abuser having his Lamborghini shipped down on a flat bed truck to spring training?  Then hear how great it was that he spoke to the media and a couple of day time yackers on radio? Why is it the guys I want to hear from the least I hear from the most?

The beat guy at the Daily Lupica likes to break Mets fans balls with some stupid Tweets. During last season I guess I tweeted him to many times telling him what a hack he was and how he seemed upset he wasn’t covering the Phillies anymore so he blocked me from his Twitter account which is no big deal to me but I would think it would be a big deal to his bosses at the Daily Lupica since I stopped buying the paper and I never link a story from their site. From the tweets I’ve read today it seems this beat guy has taken to calling Jose Reyes (Michael our resident Highlander fan, you better sit down for this one) a “future Yankee”. Mets tweeters have been outraged and have started a campaign on Twitter to unfollow him. That’s great but take it a step further, don’t link any stories of his or anything in the Daily Lupica on your sites or on Twitter. I ‘m sure Daily Lupica Sports Editor Teri Thompson will not be happy about that.

Ed Marcus/Rusty Jr. has number 21 in his list of the Top 50 Mets of All Time and this one is a bit of a controversial choice as he didn’t spend many years with the Mets and the years he did while showing flashes of brilliance from time to time didn’t exactly make a great contribution. But when he left he was legendary.

I had a great time conversing with Joe Demayo of  PSL to Flushing on the THIS CALL TO THE BULLPEN podcast today. Check it out here or on iTunes

ALDERSON AND METS HOLDING ALL THE CARDS WHEN IT COMES TO CARLOS BELTRAN

I’ve been trying to decipher the Carlos Beltran summit with Sandy Alderson and what I gather from this sit down, Alderson has let Beltran know that unlike his predecessor, he’s an upfront kind of guy so this meeting is to explain to Beltran what his options are.

With Beltran still sporting a brace on his knee and one year left on his contract (and Mets career) Alderson has laid out a few scenarios for Beltran for the upcoming season  (the man always has a plan) and it’s up to Carlos to choose which path he’d like to go.

The best plan for the Mets would be Beltran moves to right field allowing Angel Pagan to go back to centerfield where he excelled during Beltran’ absence.  You get the better fielder in the most important outfield position, who get a potent bat in your offence and it helps the wear and tear on Beltran’ arthritic knee.

If Beltran balks at that plan, then Alderson it seems has requested that Beltran waive his no trade clause and the Mets will try to move him, but only to the Mets advantage. Now the problem will be if Beltran is adamant about playing centerfield but it seems that’s a remote possibility due to the fact the Mets are in control here.

No matter what happens we know this is Beltran’ last season as a Met which is not a swipe at Beltran it’s just a fact that Carlos will turn 34 years old just after opening day and his knees will just get worse. It’s not personnel, its business.

Moving Beltran and for that matter Jose Reyes would not be in the Mets best interest at this point as both players are worth more to the Mets than what they would bring back in return but in Beltran’ case it’s nice that Sandy Alderson has met with him and it shows that Alderson knows how to deal with players better than Omar but make no mistake Beltran was not given a choice, he’s the Mets right fielder in 2011.

As much having Wally Backman as manager of the Mets would be fine by me, I just find that the more hysterical Mets fans are getting about Backman and his “fiery, I’ll kick your ass attitude” I’m starting to wonder do they want a baseball manager or a bouncer.  It’s good for Backman that he’s getting a call back but I don’t think he will be the man to get the big job as Terry Collins looks to be the favorite and if it’s Collins I won’t scream as I’ve got to put my faith in this new front office that they have done their due diligence and hired who they feel is the best man available. I could see Backman getting a coaching spot on the big league club and quite frankly I think he’d be fine with that.
