Captain Obvious-Who Doesn’t Know David Wright Is The Leader Of The Mets?

<>

I don’t get all the hub-bub over naming David Wright the Captain of the New York Mets. Who amongst players, fans and media hasn’t grasped that Wright is the Face of the Franchise? Is there anyone who follows the Mets not know who the go to guy is on this club?

In hockey and football the naming of captains are for the sole purpose of having a designated player act as a liaison  between the bench and the officials, this is especially true in hockey where only the captain or one the assistant captains are the players a referee or linesman go to with an explanation  or a warning. That’s why the hockey captains wear the “C” and the assistant captains were the “A”. In football there is a captain for offense, defense and special teams for basically the same reason they have them in hockey. The referee will consult with the captain on acceptance of penalties or a question on spotting the ball at line of scrimmage or to relay a message from the sideline by the head coach, so again the designation of wearing the “C” on the uniform is needed. But when it comes to baseball, wearing a captains “C” is just plain tacky.

When a baseball umpire needs to give an explanation on a rule or a call, he summons the team’s manager to the field for consultation. Now a player of stature like Wright, may get more leeway with an umpire that and average player but majority of the time when something needs to be explained the umpire is going right to the man in charge, the manager.

I have no problems with the Mets naming Wright the Captain of the team, it seems with so many young players ready to join the big league squad there is a bit of collegiate feel around the club so having that veteran designated to be their sounding board or the guy to show them the right way to handle big league life, there is no better man for the job than David Wright.

Wright is the perfect example of the rah-rah cheerleader type of leader is vastly overrated. Wright surely leads by example with the way he handles himself on and off the field. Wright has always been one of the first to report to spring training and the last to leave the St. Lonesome complex. He is always available to the media win or lose and no one in the history of the New York Mets has represented the organization as at more charity and fan events with class and dignity like Wright has.

So if Terry Collins wants to name Wright the Captain of the team go right ahead but it’s just a mere formality everyone knows who is the team leader now and for the next 8 seasons at least, it’s David Wright. Just don’t put that tacky “C” on his jersey

ANDRES TORRES OVER COCO CRISP, NY METS GOT THE BETTER DEAL

When the Mets off season got under way one of the position I wanted to see an upgraded was center field. I had seen enough of Angel Pagan and it seems Sandy Alderson felt the same way. I was intrigued by Coco Crisp thinking he would be a nice cheap alternative to man the less spacious tundra of the center of the Citi Field outfield.  Alderson felt the better man for the job was Andres Torres, a great glove less than potent bat outfielder who came with RHP Ramon Ramirez to the Mets from the Giants for Angel Pagan.

After reading that Crisp re-signed with the A’s for 2yrs/$14 mil, a year and cash figure that quite frankly stunned me, I went over to Fan Graphs to look at a comparison of both players.

There isn’t that much of a difference offensively between the two players that would make one about $5 mil better than the other. Crisp will make $7mil a year while Torres made $2.2 mil last year and is under team control for two more seasons.  So even with a raise to say, $3mil for Torres, having him over Crisp in the Mets outfield is major plus for the Mets.

Crisp, 32 years old, has a lifetime .264/.314/.379 with an ISO of .115 in 583 plate appearances.  Torres, 34 years old has a lifetime .221/.312/.330 with an ISO of .109 in 398 plate appearances. We are not talking offensive juggernauts here. Crisp is more the base stealer than Torres swiping 49 bags in his big league career to 19 for Torres. Both players walks rates are close Crisp take a base on balls 7.0% of his plate appearances to Torres’ 10.6 % rate. Torres K’s too much at 23.9 % while Crisp is more disciplined at 11.1 %.

Back in 2010, Torres had a fine season putting up a line of .268/.343/.479 with 16 HR 43 2B and 63 RBI for the World Champion San Francisco Giants. The last real good offensive season that Crisp has had was back in 2005. So the odds are much better of Torres giving the Mets a bounce back season than Crisp putting up big numbers.

Crsip’ defense has been in decline the last couple of years whereas Torres has continued to play a stellar centerfielder.

So for a difference of say $5mil, who made the better deal, Billy Beane by signing Crisp or Sandy Alderson dealing for Torres? It looks like advantage Alderson to me especially is Ramirez is a decent reliever then this deal could be a huge positive for the Mets.

ELECTION NIGHT RECAP-SORRY NO METS NEWS HERE

Besides having to run some early morning errands, the events of last night’s election still has me in it’s grip as I read the stories and watch the pundits talk about the historic night. I know I get myself  in some hot water when I go on a political rant here but I’ll just say this. Yes I am very happy with the Obama win and I am extremely proud of my fellow citizens for coming out in record numbers to vote. I am also touched by the very eloquent speech that John McCain made during his concession. This was not an election where you could say you despise the other candidate as I have the utmost respect for Senator McCain for his duty and sacrifice he has given to the country. I will say that he does stand out as a true patriot in a party full of phonies and it was the two-bit chicken hawks in the Republican and Conservative Parties that did him in in his run for the Presidency. McCain is a much better man and American than the Cheney’s Rowe’s and the repulsive duo of Sean Hanattiy and Rush Limbaugh of the Right Wing World.

When the Iraqi War was first waged and we found out that the government lied to us and the Congress I wanted to know where were the young people of the nation and why weren’t they venting their outrage to this war. Well, I guess they waited for the next election as the 18-25 year olds came out like never before and that to me was the greatest legacy of the election that young people of this country ,the folks who will be making policy in the future, embraced the Obama candidacy and worked hard to get him elected. Bravo to you.

Again we showed the world why we are the Super Power of the Earth. Not just because we have the best weapons and the bravest soldiers but because we have the most intelligence, heart and compassion than any other country in the world. For some strange reason while watching the 270 electoral votes go up on the screen and seeing people in Times Square and Grant Park hugging and crying and celebrating I thought about September 11 2001. Sometimes I feel I think about that day too much but it’s a day I’ll never forget and  Ground Zero is so close to my office so I’m reminded every day but I just thought how on that day we Americans were stunned, shocked and devastated by what happened and then last  night watching President-Elect Obama make his acceptance speech and telling us that he will do what he can but he needs the American people to help him it looks as if the country is back on track and headed in the right direction.

I know a lot of you were not Obama supporters but please take the words of John McCain to heart when he said no matter who you backed in this election we are all Americans and we have to do what’s right for America. The rest of the world is celebrating as well, America is Back, Better Than Ever!
