Coming Up On The 4th of July and We Are In A Pennant Race

Looks like the Mets roller-coaster season is rising to the top again with last night’s 3-2 win over the Hollywood Bums.  So far as we near the completion of the first half of the season, Mets fans emotions and view of this team has spun around like a weather vane in a tornado, they put together a nice little win streak and we feel this could the one of those season where the club can grab what looks like a wide open NL East and win the division. Then there are the losing streaks and we’re ready to slump our shoulders and look at each other with that “ I knew it was too good to be true” expression we’ve worn since Mike Vail looked like the second coming of Mickey Mantle until a shattered ankle ended that dream.

But here we are, at the end of June and the Mets are but a mere 3 ½ games out of 1st place. I think most of us are still stunned by that as all winter the number of wins predicted for this Mets team hovered between 75 and 81 with everyone who bleeds blue and orange saying a .500 season would be a dream come true. Has this first half changed your view of that dream?

This is what the summer should be about, your team in contention for a pennant where you’re not just following your team but every team in the division, that’s where we stand now with the Mets especially this weekend. With the Mets and Dodgers playing at 10PM, it sets up perfect for us to follow the Phillies at the Fish and the Nats at the Braves right into Mets (with the Dickster on the bump) Dodgers. Its weekends like this that I pity those who aren’t baseball fans.

ROD BARAJAS GETS PAROLED

I don’t know if you heard but the Mets are rebuilding…………shhhhhhhhhhhhhh keep it on the downlow.

Rod Barajas has been emancipated and is on his way home to LA and the team he rooted for as a boy, the Hollywood Bums. This wavier deal works out for everyone as Barajas had a great month or two as a Met and Josh Thole has earned an everyday promotion with Hank White as the sage back up. Too bad Barajas couldn’t sneak Ollie Perez in his suitcase.

Apparently there is a bit of dissension in the Mets clubhouse. First, a few players were upset with HoJo taking them to task and now when Barajas was waving bye-bye, an unnamed Mets player wished he was joining him. When “One Met says” and “an unidentified player” show up, you know the end is near.

“Dant-dadant-dadant-dant-dant, dant-dadant-dan-da” (Flag of Victory) KINER’S KORNER is back!!!!!! Pay attention kids, pay attention!!!!!!

F-Mart is hurt again (you don’t say?) what makes me happy about this is at 52 years old, I’m in better shape than the 21 year old Martinez.

Good bye Sweet Lou, you had a great run.

Vin Scully will be back for another season so that means at least another year of late nights for me watching and listening to Dodgers games via Extra Innings.

VOTE NOW SHOULD HOWARD MEGDAL BE THE NEXT METS GM?

If there was ever a time that the NY Mets organization needed someone like Howard Megdal, it’s now. A Megdal Administration would be the antithesis of the current stumble bums now running our favorite baseball team into the ground. Howard is running on a platform of LOGIC, TRANSPARENCY, PASSION and oh how the Mets need an infusion of all three.

Please vote now for Howard Megdal for GM and join Howard and myself on THIS CALL TO THE BULLPEN on BLOG TALK RADIO tomorrow night at 10PM ET, as we discuss the present day Mets and Howard’s blueprint of fixing the total Mets organization

WE’RE SHIPPING OFF TO BOSTON OHHHHHHHH OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Last night was a tough one but I’m trying to keep a positive outlook (which is very very difficult) as Livan Hernandez was outstanding throwing strikes in a great bounce back start of his stinker in SF. Wright and Beltran are still carrying the team on their offensive shoulders and lo and behold Daniel Murphy was Gold Glove caliber at first base (just makes J-Man putting Jeremy Reed at first look more stupid) I didn’t see the bot of 8th as I passed out and when I woke up at 1AM saw the results and turned over for four hours of sleep but from looking at the Gameday charts it looks like JJ Putz was throwing hard as his fastball was low mid 90’s so that is encouraging but when your offense is lacking protection for your big boys your pitching walks a slender tight rope. Add in the fact that the Hollywood Bums are a good baseball team that has not lost a step from the loss of Manny and are tough to beat at home. That being said I don’t have a good feeling about going into Boston this weekend. It didn’t take much for my positive outlook to turn to shit.

One area that I will roast the front office is another in the many episode of not getting injured players looked at and put on the DL. Reyes should have been sent for tests while in SF or LA as I know those two major cities have competent doctors and MRI machines that work very well. From Church’s mishandling from concussion to Delgado being flown across the country with a hip that needed surgery to the newest fuck up with Jose Reyes now looking like a DL candidate makes the Mets look amateurish and is one of the reasons fans have no faith in Omar Minaya and his board of directors.

On that note with Reyes looking like he will be gone for awhile and Alex Cora gone for a couple of months as well, how about going after Jeff Keppinger or even Ramon Santiago of the Tigers? Or Nick Green on the Red Sox it’s time for Omar to get to work.

I’ll have a lot more to talk about tonight on Pro Baseball Central so join us at 9PM EDST live and call in with your rants and raves at (646) 595-4462 If you can’t join us then listen to the podcast on our PBC site or on the upper right on this page.

JERRY’S HEAD GAMES

I’m starting to realize that I am more of a fan of Jerry Manuel the person than I am of Jerry Manuel the manager. Most nights win or lose Manuel is usually a cool cat at his press conference as he never gets rattled by questions and he takes his time giving an answer to the tough inquiries. In that, Manuel reminds me of St Joseph of Torre in his handling of the media and that is a major challenge for any manager or head coach in this town.  But some of the tactical moves that Manuel has made on this road trip and in the recent weeks have be befuddled.

Take last night. When Jeremy Reed was obtained in the Putz deal this past winter we were told he was as good as Endy Chavez at bat and in the field. So if Reed is such a good outfielder why was he playing first base last night while the defensively challenged Daniel Murphy  was put in left field. I swear I was in a daze for the first inning trying to figure the logic here and sure enough the first batter for the Hollywood Bums, Juan Pierre hits a ball to left that Murphy botched. Just stunning.

Why not just leave Murphy at first base and tell him it’s all yours until Delgado gets back maybe it would relive a bit of pressure off this kid because this is not the same Daniel Murphy we fell in love with. The Murphy kid I saw last year and early this year does not get picked off first base like an inept little leaguer. How many times have we heard Keith Hernandez say that “someone taught Murphy the right way to play baseball”?

Same with second base. If Ramon Martinez is the best we have to play back up infielder then we’re in trouble. I know that Castillo has sucked at the plate lately so if you’re going to give him the night off the let the Latin Joe McEwing (Fernando Tatis) play second he can’t do any worse than Martinez.

DUNN TO DODGERS?

According to Jason Stark at ESPN.com The Dodgers are ready to talk with the agent for Adam Dunn which if he signs with the Hollywood Bums would knock them out of the Manny Sweepstakes and if that does happen will put big time pressure on the Skill Sets to loosen up the purse strings and make Jeffey Skill Set put or shut up as to how the Mets have plenty of Dead Presidents to spend. Well walk the walk Jeffey Boy walk the walk.

Big tip of the Mets cap tap to long time Kranepool Society reader Nik for the Manny pic.

REBUTTAL TIME

There were a couple of comments from previous posts that I was going to answer in the comment section but I felt it would be better  to answer them in a full posting especially the second  one from an alleged Mets fan.

The first comment comes from Phanatic who is I guess a fan of the Phuckin’ Phills:

{I guess the fact that the Phillies scored 8 runs yesterday without a homerun will be ignored on your website. Well, isn’t that convenient.}

Well, since I am commenting on it you would be wrong Cheese Wiz breath. Yes the Phinks did mange to beat the Hollywood Bums without the aid of thier best weapon the home run but that game yesterday is what I envision baseball in hell to be play like with the duo of Mc Fullofshit and Doofus Joe announcing it that was the equivalent of 4 hours of root canal without Novocaine.

This post comes from someone named Ceetar and I’ll break his comments down in five sections:

{Honestly, who are you to say how much they should spend and how much they should charge for things?}

I’m guessing here you mean the Skill Sets and you’re right I have some pair of balls to be outraged that all of their energy is going into filling up the suites with wine sippers who couldn’t give a flyin’ fuck if the Mets won or lost. I mean really I do have some nerve fighting to make sure that the working class Mets fan that has supported this organization for years through more lean times than winning times is able to attend a Mets game that won’t cripple his bank account.

{Sure, it sucks that the world, and baseball, is more expensive. It’s still cheaper than other sports. It’s still affordable to go to games. So you can’t buy a run down pair of seats that would probably collect clutter anyway, big deal. It’s a business, and that’s a necessity that we have to deal with.}

Maybe you have to deal with it but see me I have tough time dealing with shit that pisses me off. I guess what’s affordable to some is a big luxury to others. I’m very fortunate that I was able to spend over $1500 dollars just for tickets to Mets game this year add in parking and food and shirts, hats and other Mets crap I’ve bought this year it’s well over $2500 dollars right now there are not many people who can afford that and what you need to remember is baseball is not a rich man’s sport it has always been the middle class that has supported baseball and especially the Mets and the Skill Sets need to remember that as I am especially surprised by Freddie Skill Set as he is so Brooklyn Dodger-centric and that WAS their fan base.

{security at Shea has always sucked, I agree with that. Don’t know what there is to really do about it, but ignore them as much as possible, which is what I’ve taken to doing. I couldn’t care less how they’re dressed.}

Do you go through life just ignoring assholes? I mean at some point you take a stand and I don’t know about you up when some fat slob making 7 bucks an hour says that I can’t walk through the field level section because my Upper Deck ticket makes me unworthy of such a privilege it pisses me off. The same way when I’m told that I have to leave a stadium on the last day of it’s use because said rent a cop says so as for how they dress I guess you’re a fan of orange pollyester, with belly’s hanging over the pants and dirty rags in the back pocket look sorry but I’m not.,

{I guess it would’ve been nice if they’d let us walk on the field after the game. However, it probably would’ve been a security nightmare. Maybe not, maybe so. It’s just not a big deal to me, it’s not like they owed us that. It’s not like we’d ever (except for some of us, via little league and the ron keith gary people..which you could’ve done if it was important to you) be on the field normally. Fans’ place is in the stands, and the players on the field.}

I guess you weren’t at the last game as there were more cops at Shea, it was like a Dunkin Dounuts grand opening. You must be in the Bush cabinet with that “security nightmare” scenario. It would have been fine to let everyone walk out to through the outfield fence but then that would be something nice to do for the fans and that’s against the Skill Set Doctrine. As for me going on the field I have been on the field at Shea as have been my kids so I’ve been fortunate enough to have done that but maybe, just maybe someone in attendance that day never had that chance wouldn’t have been the descent thing to do to afford that chance for someone? Guess not.

{Collapsing sucked. I know. It pisses me off too, and Omar has already made the bad move of resigning Manuel, however I think he’ll make some good moves in the off season (and not necessarily the ones the ‘fans’ demand he makes because they think they know better) and this will be a good team again in ‘09. And I can’t wait to see a game at The Citi, because so far it looks great and promises to be a fun time.}

Who would you have hired instead of J-Man? I’m pro-Omar as well but the Mets are beyond being “good” it’s time to be a championship team and the first step is to find some grinders and pitchers for the bullpen. Don’t get me wrong I’m looking forward to the new park as well Ijust hope I’m welcome there that’s all.

DID THE SQUEEZY MAKE YOU QUEASY?

If Erik Aybar puts that bunt down, Mike Scioscia is a genius but because Aybar could not take that 2-0 fastball and drop one down as Reggie Willits was bustin’ ass down the third base line and Jason Varatek had to haul his big ass plus tools of ignorance down the third baseline to tag Williets on the butt for the out, Scioscia is now one dumb fuck. Amazing simply amazing. Was it the right call? For the Angles yes it was because that’s the way the Angels play baseball and quite frankly I love that kind of play as I also love the hit and run , the stolen base and batters who work the count to their advantage. If you say “wait a minute , there was one out so you have two shots to get Willets in from third sure you do but as I said this is the way the Angles play so it was no surprise that Scioscia called for the suicide squeeze and that missed bunt is the difference between sugar and shit.

Now the Angles need to take a big swig of Shut The Fuck Up.

The Rays are a hybrid of the 1969 and 1986 Mets. Going from the last to first with pitching, defense and timely hitting is the ’69 Mets part and take no bullshit,  charge the mound ask questions later is the ’86 component. So this series against the Old Town Team should be must watch TV this week.

I never thought as a proud Brooklynite I’d ever root for the Hollywood Carpet Baggers but St Joseph of Torre and his healing green tea about to make the Corky Steinbrenner look more special ed than ever and future Met Manny Ramirez taking on the Phucking Phillies  this one is easy GO BUMS!!!!!!!!!!

Tim Dierkes at MLB Trade Rumors has a link to 10 gallon Tracy’s column that Manny from The Heights is looking for a 5yr/$85 mil deal and speculation (as it is has the last three off seasons) Omar is ready to make the offer to the Boras Extortion Agency to hook Manny.

So with the financial crisis hitting our country how does this affect the sacred sanctuary of sports team, the luxury suite? According to Mets Mouth Organ David (The Lawyer) Howard there is no financial crisis:

   {Executives at Yankee Stadium are monitoring the economic situation but have not seen any effect, said Alice McGillion, a spokeswoman. She did not provide specific sales figures, but the luxury suites are nearly sold out, according to news reports. The same is true at the Mets’ Citi Field, said Dave Howard, the team’s executive vice president for business operations.

“Timing is a part of this,” he said. “The firms we’ve sold to haven’t had any major issues, and the people who have them realize they’ve got great value for the quality of what we’re offering here.”}

I, like Calcaterra, think this is a smoke screen as well, who did the Mets and the Highlanders as well, sell these dens of greed and excess too? The only guys making enough coin to buy a luxury box drink their cordials from a pimp chalice.  And who is to say that by opening day $ti Financial will still be in business? The Mets could be taking the field at Cathouse Stadium come April.

That’s why this financial crisis hasn’t hurt me at all as I’ve invested all my money in illegal gambling, prostitution and out of state cigarettes and I’m livin’ large!
