HERE THEY ARE YOUR 1962 NEW YORK METS

On this  date in 1961, the National League held it expansion draft as it welcomed two teams into the league for the first time in 70 years, the New York Metropolitan Baseball Club (Mets) and the Houston Colt .45’s (who became the Astros )

Chris Jaffe of The Hardball Times takes a look at how both teams went about putting together their inaugural teams.  The Mets were run by former Highlander GM George Weis and went more for players with New York baseball roots, like Gil Hodges, Duke Snider and Don Zimmer whereas the Colt .45’s under Paul Richards, took a Moneyball approach looking for undervalued commodities especially in the pitching department in the later rounds of the draft.

A lot of stories this weekend were about the Big 3 getting bounced out of the postseason.  The Highlanders and Red Sox are strapped with bloated contracts that can’t be moved and the Phillies are stuck with payroll restrictions and an older lineup with not much farm help in sight. This is why it won’t be the devastating blow that many Mets fans think it will be if Jose Reyes signs elsewhere.  If Reyes is up for a 4yr/$80-$90 million deal with the Mets, that would be perfect, any more years than that, then take care Jose. Remember all that talk about Reyes getting a Carl Crawford like contract? There is no way Sandy Alderson would ever do that; even if the Skill Sets still had Bernie Madoff money he wouldn’t do it. I still say Alderson hopes there is the one dumb owner out there who will go six years  for Reyes so he can bow out of the bidding. As we see this post season you can have all the bling, bit it don’t mean a thing.

I’ll make this prediction now; Joe Girardi doesn’t last the season in 2012 as Highlanders manager. I could see Lou Pinnella taking over as interim while grooming Jorge Posada to take over as skipper in 2013.

DON’T HATE ME BECAUSE I’M EXCITED ABOUT THE RULE V DRAFT

I had the pleasure of appearing on Mike Silva’s NY Baseball Talk show last night on Blog Talk Radio where we discussed the disconnect that some Mets have with reality.

The fact that I know who Boof Bonser is has impressed my friends.  Hey, we can’t neglect our Bisons now, can we?

The Mets selected 2B Brad Emaus from the Toronto Blue Jays (JP must know something here) and RHP Pedro Beato (FINALLY A MET!!!!) from the Baltimore Orioles in the Rule V draft. Emaus has some power and is built like Dan Uggla, so I guess throw Emaus name in the 2B competition this spring. Beato was drafted by the Mets in 2007 as a draft and follow and tried to sign him for $1mil in 2008 but the Commissioner’s office advised against spending that money on a 15th round pick. Beato went back into the draft was taken by the O’s and given the same $1mil the Mets were willing to give out. Oh well, Beato born in the DR was is a Brooklyn boy as he excelled at Xaverian H.S. in beautiful Bay Ridge Brooklyn.

Looks like Ken Oberkfell will be rewarded with the position as Terry Collins consigliere, good to have Obie on board.

Word on the street is Johan Santana won’t be ready to pitch for the Mets until June. No problem. What I’m curious about is how the manager and GM handle the everyday questions about Santana. I’m hoping they address it in spring and inform the MSM that the next time you hear about Johan is when he’s ready to join the big league. Let’s concentrate on the living.

So the Highlanders look ready to shit their pants and offer Cliff Lee a 7 year deal. The kicker will be if the Rangers make a play of 6yrs and sweeten the dough, what will Lee do? Now that Carl Crawford will be grazing in the left field of Fenway Park , the Red Sox have to be favored to win the AL East with that potent lineup and terrific pitching, Lee has the Boss’s Boys by the balls. Yes, I fuckin’ love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We will now have a moment of silence to mourn the death of #Frenchtober

EAT THE RICH

Eat the Rich: there’s only one thing they’re good for
Eat the Rich: take one bite now – come back for more
Eat the Rich: I gotta get this off my chest
Eat the Rich: take one bite now, spit out the rest

I love the outrage from Highlander fans that Mets fan and other non-believers in the Pinstripe religion have the gall to mock the former World Series champs as they went down in flames to a team from a football mad state. Maybe the Flock form the Bronx will now realize that there are 29 other fan bases out there all deserving of their slice of the World Series pie. Nah, those who don the “look at my 27 TIME WORLD CHAMPION jacket” or the my favorite the big gas guzzling SUV with the huge NY on the back window, a staple for Highlander fans from Staten Island, only care about winning, as rooting for the Highlanders makes up for some deficiency in their lives.  Now I’m not saying all Highlander fans are like that and not even the majority but mostly the younger 20-30 year old fans are that way. There whole grasp of Highlander history is the organization has won 27 World Series titles and that’s it. So maybe with their team out of the post season they could sit down and do some research on the history of their team ? Nah never happen all they want to here is Cliff Lee and Carl Crawford are signed for a quarter of a million dollars, because it’s not scouting or sabermetric analysis that fuels the Highlanders it’s dead presidents baby.

Congratulations to the SF Giants for winning the 2010 NL Pennant and for playing in one of the best baseball games I’ve seen a long time. I have to tip my Mets cap to Bruce Bochy, who I’ve never been a fan of, for bring in The Freak to pitch the 8th inning. What a concept, bringing in your best pitcher to win a game. Even though Lincecum got in trouble with two on and one out, Brain Wilson came in and did what he did a lot of this season, get a 5 out save.

As a Mets fan it’s tough to root for Cody Ross who as a Fishhead killed the Mets and rubbed their noses in it but to go from cast off to NLCS MVP is impressive.

How about Bengi Molina? No matter what he gets a World Series ring and a check.

The one thing that has me skittish about Sandy Alderson taking over as Mets GM, is his philosophy of hiring non-descript managers. Alderson like the guy in the white short sleeve dress shirt with the blue tie and tie clip. Mets fans are looking for more of an aggressive Carhartt wearing type of dock boss as field general. Maybe that’s why this process is dragging out and that Josh Byrnes is getting a call back interview. Could it be the guy who says, he’s cool with Wally Backman being the manager gets the job?
