In honor of the Mets playing the Indians this weekend

I was all pumped up for last night’s Ravens-Broncos game, even with the usually silly bullshit pre-game hoopla that the NFL loves that probably says more about the American viewing public that the league and the NFL (give the people what they want, I guess) itself. So after the insufferable Ryan Seacrest came on the field, I was begging, PLEASE, PLEASE  LET”S HAVE THE KICK OFF!!!!!!! Next thing you know Al (I’ve got the horse right here, his name is Paul Revere…) Michaels tells me there is a weather delay due to lighting in the area. “Sigh”, something’s telling me check my At Bat app and watch some baseball.

I tuned into the Yankees-Red Sox and let me just give a few observations on that experience:

Michael Kay is not a good baseball play by play man. I’m not trying to be nasty here, after listening to him for a few innings he doesn’t have the voice or the right style or cadence you need to announce baseball games.

Where were all the Yankee fans? Lots of empty seats and the big ball orchard in the South Bronx. Just goes to show, there is no such thing as a diehard Yankee fan.

The Yankees sure could use a catcher.

With the exception of Robinson Cano, there is no everyday Yankee I’d take over the Mets starting 8.

It’s painful to watch Nora Desmond Derek Jeter play shortstop

Just looking at the Red Sox with those scraggly beards makes me itchy.

Joba Chamberlain sucks

I switched back and forth from Ravens-Broncos to Yankees-Red Sox, when the Yankees started to make a game out this in the 7th inning; I abandoned the football game and stuck with baseball. For all the hype the first game of the NFL had and I bought into the hype, it took Yankees-Red Sox to show me that baseball is still KING!

Scott Kazmir will match up with Zack Wheeler tonight in Cleveland in a game of Mets Phenoms’ past and present.  I found the post I wrote after the Kazmir-Victor Zambrano trade from 9 years ago WOW!

I’m starting to be swayed by Lucas Duda as the 2014 Mets first baseman. I think the front office might be leaning in that direction as well. A tandem of Duda/Josh Satin in 2014 at 1st base may not be too bad. It is amazing how comfortable and more confident Duda is when playing 1st base. Duda reacts to playing left field the way I do when my wife asks me to clean out the garage.

I don’t understand some Mets fans upset that the club hasn’t called up Ruben Tejada to take over for Omar Quintanila. Do you think Sandy Alderson is enjoying watching Q or Justin Turner play shortstop instead of the 23 year old Tejada? Don’t you think with all the holes Alderson has to fill this off season, he wishes shortstop wasn’t one of them? Don’t you think the reason that Ruben Tejada is not up with the big club is Ruben Tejada? Alderson let the fan base know in a non-sugar coated way that Tejada’s work ethic sucks and his time in the bushes is for him to reflect if he really wants to be a big leaguer and if he does, he needs to work and work harder to make it. This is nothing new with Tejada, Terry Collins has had a red ass over Tejada, the last two seasons, not because he dislikes Ruben but because he sees a talent being wasted by a piss poor attitude and work ethic. You want to be angry about Q starting at short every game? Direct that anger where it belongs, at Ruben Tejada.

I’d love to see Hunter Pence in right field for the 2014 Mets

How about taking a run at obtaining Jose Bautista? You have to figure with the Jays ownership can’t be happy with the way this season has gone after investing money and trading for players they felt would lead them to the post season.

Joey Bats will make $14 mil next season and in 2015, with a team option in 2016 for $14 mil or a $1 mil buyout. Bats solves your power problem and left field problem as well .

Oh by the way, the Blue Jays play the Twins tonight. So what? The pitching matchup is R.A. Dickey vs. Mike Pelfrey.

The Irish will kick some Blue and Maze ass tomorrow night.

Hey NY Highlander Fans, You Think This Post Season Is Bad, You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet

I’ve always felt that once you sign on to be a fan of a sports team, you’re a fan for life. Like a marriage, good times and bad, and till death do us part.  Fan support has been a big topic this weekend as for the first that I can remember a professional post season sporting event in NYC was played before a lot of empty seats, and in all places, Highlanders Stadium.

I was very surprised to see so many tickets available for Games 1 and 2 of the ALCS games in the Bronx. The tickets that were available on Stub Hub were way under face value as well so what the hell happened?

Myself and Mike Silva discussed this last night on our Sports Media Watchdog Podcast going over many different reasons from cost of tickets, commuting, and traffic all play a part but the feeling I get is many Highlanders fans just have no faith at all in their team and with Derek Jeter done for the remainder of the post season, it seems the fans have packed it in for the year just like the Highlanders offense.

It was discussed a lot during the season as the Bronx Bastards were hitting home run after home run many fans and media types had concern that this club was not built for the post season where most game runs are at a premium.  The Highlanders look at playing small ball like it’s an affront on their manhood, but a bunt here, a stolen base there, a little hit and run might be how they have to go after the Tigers. The Highlander pitching has been superb to the point where I feel C.C. Sabathia is underrated as a pitcher and big game performer and you cannot say enough about the job Hiroki Kuroda did on 3 days’ rest. Problem is I can’t find a Highlander fan who shares my feelings, all they see is an impotent offense and their Captain lying prone on the infield dirt.

The Highlander fans have really turned to heels when it comes to their team, the players, especially Nick Swisher are having a tough time accepting the taunts and cat calls from a fan base that has “if we don’t win the World Series the season is a failure” mentality that management and the teams PR department has branded into their heads.  This is what happens when you promote ad nausea that you are the 27 Time World Champions, and put up billboards like this around the city and sell obnoxious t –shirts and generally act like no other team in baseball is worthy of being in the same league as you. Even your fans stop buying that bullshit.

Problem for the Highlanders is their fan base is not prepared for failure. The Highlander fan of my generation who remembers when attendance figures of 3,000 or less at the REAL Highlander Stadium were the norm and how the Mets were the darlings of New York, knows that as great as the winning feels, the cycle does bring you to hard times as well, but you stick with your team thick or thin. The new Generation of Highlander fan that jumped on the bandwagon the last 20 to 25 years doesn’t have the heart to support a losing team.  Let’s face it with the combination of age, Hal Steinbrenner looking to cut payroll, a barren farm system and the teams in their division not only getting better but they also smell Highlander blood in the water knowing that the once mighty New York Highlanders are no longer feared.

It happens; the great Core players that led the Highlanders to championships are gone. Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera are the Four Horsemen of the great Highlander run. Rivera and Jeter will be back but they are both will be coming off severe injury and an age where players decline rather than improve. There could be tough times ahead for the Highlanders but just think fans you have a whole lot of Highlander Classics and Highlander-ograhpy’s  to watch on YUCK until the next cycle of winning comes along hopefully that won’t come around for a long long time.

USING TWITTER TO SET PEOPLE STRAIGHT

Last night while watching the Mets-Cards game and enjoying the return of Jose Reyes and short timer Carlos Beltran, I went back to a bad habit that I thought I had overcome, going on Twitter while watching the Mets. I tried breaking this habit because I couldn’t take the fill in the player’s name “You Suck” and then when said player comes through the same Tweeters comeback with fill in the player’s name “I<3 you”. It get tiring. Well last night I guess I’d had enough as Jose Reyes made his second great play at short. Bases loaded 1 out and Albert Pujols  at bat against Bobby Parnell and the Mets holding a 2 run lead. Pujols hits a ground ball at the 2nd base bag Reyes snares hit and touches the bag while trying to avoid getting wiped out by the runner gets a laser beam throw off to Lucas Duda for the double play. An outstanding play if there ever was one.

Now the play by play of than call by Gary Cohen was as usual perfect. Well to everyone but 1050 ESPN’s Don LeGreca. When I read that Tweet I was ready to scream, this guy works with arguably the worst play by play man in baseball in Michael Kay (John Sterling sucks as well, I know but at least Sterling is entertaining, Kay makes homicidal thought run through your mind) so I had to take matters into my own fingers and tweet back to Mr. LeGreca. He in turn tweets back that he is a big fan of Gary’s (don’t give that first name basis bullshit you just ripped the guy for an over the top call when in fact it was a great call and you look like a horses ass) and that wasn’t the point of the Tweet. Then what was the point? Saying the DP started by Reyes was routine? That makes you ignorant. Saying that Cohen’ call was “over the top” that just makes you look jealous and petty.

I think I’ll Tweet LeGreca back (before he blocks me) about he felt about his boss Kay and the way he not only ruined the Derek Jeter 3,000 hit call with his constant” listen to me try to make the moment mine” diatribe when Jeter homered and then how he went on to felate The Captain the rest of the game.

See that is the glory of Twiter, you say stupid shit and then your set straight. Let’s see who pisses me off tonight.

GEE? CARRASCO? WHO KNEW?

Today is the 35th Anniversary of Rick Monday saving the American flag from being burned by a couple of assholes at Dodger Stadium. What made this attempt at flag burning even more galling back then was the country was getting ready to celebrate the Bicentennial.  I hope those two morons in the picture that tried to light the flag on fire have had 35 years of misery.

So much for same old Mets.  As we see no matter your contract, if you don’t produce, you can be replaced and Sandy Alderson is calling the shots.

After Dillion Gee’ start on Saturday, Terry Collins stated in his post-game press conference that it would be better to have Gee pitch on a regular basis in Buffalo than in the Mets bullpen. Well, the GM had a different idea, keeping Gee and shipping D.J. Carrasco out to the Bison. The names bantered around that would be effected by solid outing by Gee were Chris Capuano or Chris Young and I felt Jon Niese could be the odd man out, I have to say I never thought about Carrasco getting the boot to Buffalo. Who the hell knew that Carrasco had options? Sandy Alderson that’s who.

Ronnie Paulinohas had another set back with a strained rib cage so that means the  Nickeas /Thole catching combo lives on.  When it comes time to activate Paulinoit may be Thole who gets sent back to Buffalo. Thole has not done much with the bat and it looks like he will not be behind the plate when Big Pelf pitches (we will know if Nickeas catches Pelfrey on Friday when he is scheduled to go up against the Phillies and Joe Blanton) so Thole has a week or ten days to get the bat going or he could be gone.

Ian O’Connor has written a book on Derek Jeter and part of the book was excerpted in the NY Post yesterday.  It does not portray El Capitan’ in a very good light. Not much earthshattering here, Jeter hates A-Rod, St Joseph of Torre favored Jeter over Rodriguez, and Pee Wee Cashman  doesn’t have much love for Jeter who told Jeterwhen A-Rod was having his problems withHighlander fans and with his admittance to steroid use and not having The Captain stand by his side that “he has to lead them all” a big shot to the legend of the Jeter leadership fairy tale which takes a bigger hit when Cashman tells CC Sabathia during his contract negotiation the he needs him to help fix a fractured clubhouse.

I interviewed Tyler Kepner of the NY Times on THIS CALL TO THE BULLPEN last Wednesday as we talked about the bookDerek Jeter: From The Pages of The New York Times, where we spoke about the A-Rod/Jeter relationship and how much of the Jeter leadership portrait is fact and fiction.

ALL QUIET ON THE FLUSHING FRONT

Before we talk Mets I have to give a shout of congratulations to the UCONN Women’s Basketball Team for last night win over Stanford in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Finals. The Lady Huskies  scored an all time low 12 points in the first half of this game but came out of the locker room on fire to the tune of a 32-9 run. For UCONN Lady Huskies it was their 7th NCAA title, 78th straightwin and finished the first back to back undefeated season since John Wooden’s UCLA teams. If new soon to be Brooklyn Nets owner, Mikhail Prokhorov wants to make a big coaching hire he should look at Geno Auriemma.

Mike Silva of NYBD writes about David Wright and his burden as spokesman for the Mets. Silva talks of how Wright has to deal with the responsibility of dealing with media queries night after night. As I wrote in the comments section of his site, I would rather deal with the NY media than Little League parents any day. Wright is a big boy who has been in this town long enough to know that winning brings relief of serious media interrogation.  The only way you get the media and fan base off your back is to win. Do you think Derek Jeter could ever get away with his stick up his ass attitude if he didn’t have five World Series Rings?  No way!

I hope the Mets PO-PO is right that the Mets will ditch the black next season. Hell, why wait until next year, which by the way will be the 50th Anniversary of the team existence, DUMP THE BLACK NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Especially those nasty two toned black and blue hats, I skeeve that awful head wear.

According to MLB the New York Mets have the highest number of foreign born players with 18 of the 25 players on the opening day roster born somewhere other than the USA. I mention this because it has come up on my Google Reader in about 50 different articles. For someone born and raised in NYC it gives me a good laugh. On the block where I live you have myself; born to Irish immigrants and my wife whose maternal grand parents come from Italy and here paternal grandparents come for Poland. My next door neighbors are from Albania. My neighbor’s right across the street from me are from India, the family next to them are from China, and then there are Mexicans, Koreans and Russians at the end of the block so it tells me that the Mets are a real New York team.

WORLD’S ARE COLLIDING HERE

As I was channel surfing last night I stumbled upon the US-PR WBC game on the MLB Network and I nearly passed out when I saw D-Wright sliding head first into home plate for Team America.  I figured Wright, the Mets and Mets fans had dodged a bullet when Wright taking in knee to the head was ok but now here comes the separated shoulder and 6 months on the DL but Wright jumped up clapping his hands and was in fine shape.  So relieved , I went back to Rangers-Canadians on MSG.

After a thrilling Rangers victory in a shootout of the Habs (and a jump to 6th place in the East, I so want the Devils in the first round just to kick Fat Marty’s ass) I flip back over to the classic which is now in the 9th inning just in time to see D-Wright take Fernando Cabrera’ slider that was down and away-a pretty good pitch-the other way (J-Man’s hitting drill comes thru again) for a well placed single to win the game for USA.

As happy as I was for Wright it was still a bit unnerving to see Derek Jeter and Jimmy Rollins grabbing Wright and hugging him during the celebration. I bet Jeter wishes his third baseman was hot like ours

W B C-YA LATER

Whoever came up this World Baseball Classic bullshit tournament needs a punch in the face. You want to play a trumped up fantasy type game like this do it on a computer or X-Box. When it comes defending my country, I’m all in but when it comes to baseball my heart is Blue and Orange. All I care about are the New York Mets and what spring training is for is to evaluate my team to see if we’re ready for the upcoming season and with this WBC, that goal is taking a back seat and that pisses me off.

The Pudge to the Mets rumors are back and hotter and heavier as the team may be trying to give Shrek a prod in the ass or maybe they are just sick and tired of his underachieving.

As per Mike Silva NYBD, the Philadelphia Inquirer is running a poll on which Mets collapse was the best the 2007, 2008 or the on this upcoming season. Silva does a great job taking the paper to the wood shed but I’d say to Mike and all Mets fans just let these Philly Phuck heads be. It will be fun watching them embarrass themselves as they have no idea how to handle success. The whole town is like trailer trash winning the Mega Millions Lottery, they will self-destruct soon.

You get the feeling at some point the U.S Dept of Justice will throw in the towel on trying to prosecute Barry Bonds. All this is a waste of Federal Agent manpower, clogging the courts and a big waste of money. Just blame it all on the Bush Administration we’ll all understand.

I would pay money to watch Lou Pinella beat Steve Philips’ ass.

Just the thought of D-Wright lockering next to Jimmy Rollins and Derek Jeter makes me want to heave

LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE IN FLUSHING

If anything came up as a positive last night that the Phelatios won the NL Pennant it’s that the flame that was close to Omar Minaya ass to make his team better just turned into a blow torch. I ‘ve read a lot about who should go, who should come back and who the Mets should go after but as much as we Mets fans want to see some movement immediately nothing will happen until after the World  Series and after the free agency grace period. As far as the bullpen I would say you won’t see any action on that until December to see what players are offered arbitration and who doesn’t as the non-tendered list should bring something of substance to the beleaguered pen. This process will be take a while to play out and I’d say to all Mets fans to be patient but I know better than to go that route.

I am staring to fee bad for Mike Francesa. Here was a guy who was on top of the sports talk food chain and now has become as relevant as a rotary telephone. It’s hard to get mad at his Anti-David Wright rant yesterday as I feel more embarrassed for him than pissed. To say that David Wright is not a five tool player and that “every team in baseball has a David Wright “ is so over the top stupid it was like listening to a drunk at a dinner party slur his words and spit his food. WFAN has tried to do everything to save Mike’d Up as they see that Francesa by himself can not carry a show (just like Derek Jeter can’t carry a team by himself) and Program Director Mark Chernoff has trotted in just about all of the talent the station has to find a match. So far Joe Beningno has been the best of the lot with surprisingly Evan Roberts putting up a good showing as well. Kim Jones was good to but Mike was treating her like it was his sister and not a colleague and the biggest disappointment was Chris Carlin who was dreadful but I digress, it seems most of the callers and posters on MikeFrancesa.com feel that this attack on Wright is personal. A caller brought this up to Francesa and he acted in his typical rude way. For Francesa to diss Wright as he has in belittling his ability not only in the field but at bat (at one point in the day, Francesca said that Wright’s 33 HR’s and 124 RBI meant nothing and that Wright was an awful 3rd baseman which if a blogger wrote that they would be laughed at and their site never heard from again) .

It sad because as much as I would bitch about how out of touch Francesa is I listen every day at work and I’ve always found his analysis spot on for the most part, but now I see a guy who looks ready for a nervous breakdown and who misses his partner more than he will ever let on.

Mike Silva has a post on this Francesa Fiasco at his always informitive NY Baseball Digest site

R.I.P. Tom Tresh. I remember getting one of his bats at bat day at Highlander Stadium as a little kid and having my friends beg me for it looking to trade me a Ron Woods bat for a Tresh bat and when I wouldn’t budge on the deal being called a “stupid fucking Mets fan” which is funny because those same friends still call me that to this day.

Joel Sherman in his Hardball Blog writes on how Larry Bowa enjoyed working with Manny Ramirez and how Bowa is rumored to be headed back to the Highlanders. If Bowa is looking to leave LA why doesn’t Omar grab him to coach 3rd base? A Bowa type is sorely needed and Bowa did play for the Mets. Okay that one was a stretch but I would love to see Bowa waving home runners at third for the Mets.

Here’s what I took from last night’s Presidential debate. If you were going to jump off a building, Barrack Obama would talk you out of leaping to your death. John Mc Cain on the other hand seems like he would yell “Will you fucking jump already!!!

METS-NATS TOP 4

John Maine just walked again

This could be a classic Mex game as Gary Cohen has hinted that they may take phone calls. Mex is now reminiscing about his days on Cardinal teams that were out of the race early like these Nats and how you become a selfish player at that point just looking to pad your numbers

Maine threw a pitch right at LMillz it should be something to watch as maybe there will be some payback against the Nats for their bush league behavior from the last time the teams met. Remember, Elijah Dukes and L Millz doing the Little League chanting in the dugout? Last year as well the Nats felt like they helped drive the Mets in their downward slide last September so look out.

Question? If Derek Jeter is supposed to be this great team leader and CAPTAIN of all CAPTAINS then when will he put his foot in Robinson Cano’s ass? Jose Reyes was carved up in this town for shit that wasn’t even close to what this lazy bastard Cano has done the last week or so and even Joey G, who’s slip as a manager is really showing this year, hasn’t punished him either and Pack A Day Hank has thrown in the towel. This is high comedy kids. I mean the least Jeter should do is make Cano wax his Ford Escape. An another thing while I’m on a Bronx Bastards rant, all the so called experts wrote and spoke about how the Highlanders had this abundance of youg players ready to hit the big league scene to keep the Highlanders on top for years to come. What a bunch of bullshit. First off they have no clue on how to cultivate pitching and second they have absolutely no depth in their organization. The Mets have dipped into the bush leagues to pull up gems like Daniel Murphy, Argenis Reyes, Robinson Cancel and the revived Fernando Tatits. When a starting pitcher was needed they called up Brandon Knight and Brian Stokes not world class arms but two guys who would be a big part of the Highlander staff if they played in the Bronx. All we can hope is we have a repeat of the mid 60′s to the mid 70′s when the Highlanders sucked and sucked hard.

Oh Danny Boy you are magnificent.

I love how Mex thinks this one is in the bag what a kiss of death he is
