NY METS AT THE CROSSROADS

Last couple of days I’ve been  busy as all hell with real work, setting up podcasts and coaching so I’m a bit behind with my Mets rants so let me get right to ‘em:

Really were you shocked to hear that Jenry Meija blew out his elbow and is headed for Tommy John surgery? Last night on the BBA Baseball Talk Podcast, D.J. Short of Hard Ball Talk and Rotoworld was a guest and we both felt the same way, we weren’t surprised. Of course the first reaction is to curse Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel for their misuse of Mejia last season and to say that the organization didn’t do it’s best to work with Mejia to get him to use the proper pitching mechanics to try to help avoid this type of injury but as a baseball layman I really don’t know how much any of this played in Mejia blowing out his elbow.

After speaking to Rick Peterson for a bit during the winter he spoke about working on pitchers mechanics as the easy part of coaching it’s getting that pitcher to repeat the proper mechanic, that’s the hard part.

The one bright spot, I guess is most pitchers who endure TJ surgery comeback as good as ever with proper rehab and instruction. Let’s hope that’s the case with Jenry Mejia.

Jose Reyes is on fire and it has not gone unnoticed around baseball. Some reports have the Giants looking real hard at making a play for Reyes and to tell you the truth I don’t envy Sandy Alderson with having to make the decision on what to do with Reyes. Part of me wants Reyes to stay and sign a new deal and live happily ever after in Flushing. Then I think well if the Giants are as desperate as the should be (Mike Fontenot batting 3rd?) and you can pry away RHP Zach Wheeler and LHP Eric Surkamp in a Reyes deal that would be hard to turn down. The outcry from a large portion of this fan base will be ear splitting but then again this Mets fan base is the most Bi-polar any fan base in sports. They want to win but they don’t want to deal anyone they have affection for. The Reyes fans want him here forever as does the David Wright fans but as soon as both these Faces of the Franchise slump, they blame them for everything but the Skill Sets shity investments. You can’t have it your way all the time. Sometimes the adults have to make the big decisions and even the most casual baseball fan knows you’re nothing without pitching.  So the question you ask yourself is do I want to build a winning team or do I want to keep players I like around and finish in the second division again and again  or do I think it’s time to revamp my team and go with a new game plan? After all that I still don’t know what the Mets should with Reyes and I wonder if Sandy Alderson feels the same way?

I do know this, The Skill Sets need to sell the team, if not all of it a majority of it as it would break my heart to see the Mets end up like the Dodgers and not be able to meet payroll. Either Fred gets some new cash flowing into this organization or the Skill Sets need to get the fuck out. I’m tired of all this sentimentality bullshit from him, his incompetent brother in law and his dopey kid, about wanting to keep the team in the family for years and years. You should have though about that when your pal Bernie was fucking you over but you didn’t see it because the money was flowing like a Niagara Falls. Now you want sympathy. You won’t get it here, my sympathy is with the team and with Mets fan, Fred you love the Mets so much then do the right thing, sell the whole fucking kit and caboodle and keep a little piece for you along with a suite and go off into the sunset.

Those caps the Mets wore last night were horrendous, I thought I was watching an episode of 30 Rock.

NO BULL! BIG DECSIONS IN THE METS PEN

The Mets bullpen situation is such that Sandy Alderson and his staff are trying to do some creative bookkeeping to by some time.

The Mets have asked Jason Isringhausen to stay an extra week in St Lonesome so to make sure his elbow is sound. The biggest fear the team has is keeping Izzy and he craps out in May. They have asked Blaine Boyer to accept a minor league deal when Boyer figures if he’s released he’d get a major league deal in a heartbeat.  The two moves come with the realization that Many Acosta and his 90+ fastball will be snatched up on wavers as well.  For a team that everyone feel s is a MLB bottom feeder, it seems there is some talent worth scheming for.

I’d like to see Izzy staying an extra week just to prove he can pitch without pain. The Mets want him on this team badly and if it weren’t for the pop he heard in his elbow a week ago, all this maneuvering wouldn’t be happening. Izzy is on the record as saying he will not take a minor league deal it’s big leagues or retirement for him . Boyer is interesting as he has also has an out in his deal with the Mets and they love his 90+ fastball that he gets down in the strike zone that converts to tons of ground ball outs.

I’d let Acosta go and hope Boyer agrees to a Minor League deal, if he doesn’t the you have no choice but to let him go as well and take a chance on Izzy even though you know he could be done by June.

One thing I better not see is Bobby Parnell getting optioned to Buffalo that would be a Minaya-like move.

D.C. FOLLIES

Ollie Perez has signed a MINOR yes MINOR league deal with the Washington Nationals. So when the Mets asked OP to go to the bushes he and Scott Boras said “nada” but when the best deal you can find is a bush league contract with a bottom feeder team it’s a deal.

The Nats better hope Ollie-ittes isn’t contagious or they will have more to worry about than Stephen Strasburg’s Tommy John-ed elbow .

Enjoy the bus rides, Ollie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I CAN’T WAIT TO HEAR OMAR BUMBLE AND STUMBLE OVER THIS ONE

I think we are all beyond the point of being shocked when another player is stamped defective but in the case of Johan Santana the question is who in the organization knew his elbow was hurting and when did they know it?

Jerry Manuel claims that since the All Star break Santana had an issue with the elbow, if this is true, this makes the organization more inept than we ever imagined. As much as we fans give the team doctors and training staff holy hell for the injuries maybe our wrath is misguide and this is just another case of the front office being clueless once again ?

Did Santana go to Dan Werthen or Manuel and tell either one that his elbow was not right? Let’s say he did. Now wouldn’t they then go to Omar and tell him we have a problem and in turn wouldn’t Minaya send Santana straight to the doctor for an examination? At that point wouldn’t an MRI be ordered to see what was causing the discomfort in the elbow? This problem didn‘t happen yesterday or last week it seems the Mets have allowed Santana to pitch with a bum wing. Again who is in charge here?

We can all joke and laugh about who’s next to get hurt and sit and lament about us poor little Mets fans suffering through a lousy season but in all seriousness this organization is a total embarrassment from the owner to the GM to the coaches manager and players.

My biggest fear is not who will be injured next but it’s that the Mets are becoming the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Adding to my confused state is one Billy Wagner. What the fuck does this guy want? He has been praised here and every where on his hard work and perseverance at coming back from surgery to get back to the big leagues. The Mets tired to help him and themselves by placing him on waivers and letting him go to a contending team. Now he’s making all kinds of demands and looking to pitch close to his Virginia home. Well, where does he want to go? DC? Baltimore? Atlanta? Miami? Not one of those teams will pay him the kind of money he wants in the off season. It seems this will work in the Mets favor. As long as the offer him arbitration they either get a very good set up man or two more draft picks. Since Wagner is more worried about getting 400 saves than pitching in a post season it seems he will turn down arbitration sign with the Marlins and the Mets get two draft picks. Advantage Mets.

I don’t know what’s sadder that Santana is not starting tonight or that the best the Mets can come up with to take his spot is Nelly Figs?

A MOMENT OF SCHADENFREUDE

From the Fuck-adelphia Daily News

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told media today that Cole Hamels will be leaving spring training to fly to Philadelphia, where he will be examined by team doctor Michael Ciccotti.

Hamels has had persistent soreness in his elbow, which Amaro says has become “more localized” lately

I CALL THIS MEETING TO ORDER

                                                            MEMORANDUM

Organizational Meeting

Location: Manager Manuel’ Office

Attendees: Jeff Wilpon, Omar Minaya Jerry Manuel, Dan Warthen, Johan Santana,

Time: ASAP

Subject- Time to get on the same fucking page!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes I wish I weren’t a Mets fan so I could sit back like the rest of baseball get get a good laugh at this organization. Here we have arguably the best pitcher in baseball someone the Mets have a huge investment in monetarily and emotionally and everyone from the top of the Skill Sets to Omar to the coaches/manger to the players really need to get their shit together as it pertains his Santana’ left elbow.

Old School Wathern says no go for opening day. Santana says he still on track to pitch the opener in Cincy. The Mets are sending Santana to NYC for an MRI. The Mets are NOT sending Santana to NYC for an MRI. The only constant in this whole mess is the churning in Mets fans stomachs waiting for the report that Santana is headed to Birmingham to see Dr. Andrews.

How fucking hard is it to take Santana to a doctor in St. Lonesome or some where in the vicinity to get his elbow in an MRI machine? Sometimes I get the feeling that St Lonesome is a more remote area than any used on the TV show Survivor.

Stop letting Santana dictate what goes on around here, if his elbow hurts get it checked out how god damn hard is this to do.

PARDON ME WHILE I RUIN YOUR WEEKEND

If you haven’t gagged on your bagel this morning then I guess you haven’t seen this from Adam Rubin’s Surffin’ The Mets blog:

Johan Santana says doctors told him it’s the triceps tendon that is causing stiffness in his pitching elbow. With pitching coach Dan Warthen and manager Jerry Manuelalready on the bus for Lakeland, Fla., Santana said he’ll wait until Sunday to map out a plan for pitching. But it’s clear he won’t be in a Grapefruit League game for a while. Santana said he hopes to throw a light bullpen session on Sunday. He then wants to face hitters in a batting-practice-style setting two or three times before entering a game. With potentially two days rest in between each BP, we’re possibly talking two weeks before a game appearance.

<GULP!>

Yes, that is the Mets puke bucket making an early season appearance

METS MUSINGS

Take a listen to last night’s NY Baseball Digest show as Joey DeMayo dished out some great dirt on the off season plans of our Amazin’s. I listened to the show and three things made me sit up straight and listen. First, Ryan Church LOVES NY and Mike Francesa is full of shit (and cheeseburgers too) what pissed Church off was the fact that Dirty Duaner and Ricardo Rincon showed up late for games the last week of the season,  then there is a Jason Issringhausen mention. Remember Izzy?  His deal with the Cardinals is up and he could come to the Mets with a spring training invite to prove his elbow has been repaired and in good operating order, and then the one that had me going was the fact that the Mets will be in the Manny Ramirez hunt. In fact Omar tried hard to make a match when Manny was sent to LA so now that all it cost is money look for the Mets to make a move with Manny. I know I just ruined the day for a lot of you but I am and unabashed Manny fan and I vote yes for Manny to the Mets. Flame away, y’all!

Ambirorix Burgos is finished as a Met and a professional baseball player and a free man. Good riddance.

The can’t tear our house does fast enough; it seems as the back page of the Daily News show us. Click here for the multimedia show of the Shea dismantling  My wife came up with a great question the other day when she asked me “ Why didn’t the Mets let us walk on the field after the game on Sunday”?  Why dear ?, because that would be something  the fans would have cherished and Mets management is against us being happy. Really how could they not have done this? They had about 1,000 cops on duty and they could have let the fans line up with one line of fans walking from the third base side to center field and another line of fans go from the first base side to center field . I guess they were afraid that Mets fans would have the unmitigated gall to take some stadium dirt or some grass because as we all know that dirt and that grass will be used to raise funds for “charity” Yeah right.

I think I’ll be rooting for the Tampa Rays and maybe we all should as the owner Stuart Steinberg is a Mets fan and a season ticket holder and of course there is the Scott Kazmir scenario.

Howard Megdal has a plan to get the bullpen back in shape for 2009 in today’s New York Observer. It’s too bad the people who run the team don’t have the insight like people who cover team like Howard.

So today we get official word that Omar Minaya gets a 3 yr extension but according to Newsday, J-Man might be playing hardball with the Mets and if I were J-Man I’d slow down a bit as  Gary Carter is just a phone call away.

THE RIGHT TO BEAR RELIEF ARMS

Sorry for the late posting but I’ve been on the phone with Barack Obama as he is pleading with me to be his running mate in Novemeber. I’m taking time to contemplate what to do. Obama has promised me that when we win in Novemeber my duties as Vice President will not take away from my blogging about the Mets, in fact he assured me of being at opening day next year at $iti Field as I woud be his rep at the game. This is a very tough decison I have to make. J-Man thinks he has it tough.

I have to give credit to the Mets relievers, they are far more restrained than I could ever be if I were in their shoes. Everyday now that Billy Wags looks like he’s done for the year (you know one the inflammation in his elbow goes down an MRI will show a tear, it’s Mets luck kids) their ability, guts and talent are questioned by the fans, media and the manager and not one guy has exploded in anger. I wish I had that kind of temperament because I know if I were a Mets reliever I’d have told this whole city to go fuck itself by now.

Here is what me, you the media and the players need to get into their heads, there is no white knight on the way to close out games for the Mets. If the Mets and I mean Omar, Jeffy and Tony B even think about dealing Nick Evans, Dan Murphy, Jon Neise or the Teen Aged Hitting Machine for some ragged arm reliever off the wavier wire then the name of the blog will be changed to I Hate The Mets. No one is going to hand over a reliever to the Mets (Nick Evans for David Weathers? I will burn every piece of Mets clothing and memorabilia I have if that deal is ever made ) and the Phillies will block every wavier move that favors the Mets so forget it. The best you can hope for right now is that Al (Curly) Reyes, joins Jose (Moe) Reyes and Argenis (Larry) Reyes as the Mets have done well with guys named Reyes.

Oh and scratch Todd Jones off your wish list as he just landed on the DL with a sore shoulder.

If John Maine were healthy he would move to the closer role but with his shoulder problems you can’t ask him to pitch on an day to day basis, in fact when he does start it looks like 5 to 6 innings tops is what your going to get out of him so the four days rest he gets between starts is much needed. Forget Petey as well even though he has the mind set and heart to close he just doesn’t have the pitching arsenal to succeeded in that spot. OP? to valuable as a starter. Santana? “Nuff said. That leaves Big Pelf and if in the next two weeks that no one steps up and does the job Big Pelf would be the guy that heads to the pen. If Pelfrey were a big strike out guy the move would have been made already I think but since he’s not then the Mets brass will use him in the late innings only as a last resort. He woul dsuced there for the fact that he has mastered hitting the low strike zone and can induce double plays . If the Mets can’t find someone to step in or step up and they do make the post season more likely than not Big Plef will head to the pen.

Now I’m calling on citizens from all over the world this is Captain America calling.

Hey things could be worse, Carl Pavano could be your starting pitcher

This has to be seen to be believed.

IT DON’T COME EASY, YOU KNOW IT DON’T COME EASY…..

Listening to Edward R Francesa from Jets camp and he just gave the bad news that Billy Wags is down and out as his elbow and forearm are still hurting and it looks like Omar and the Brain (farts) trust are looking at making John Maine the closer.  Whatever way the Mets go, hopefully they make a fast and firm decision instead of the straddle the fence way they have done things the last few years. As my Latino buddies say “Put on your belt Omar, and take charge” If it’s Maine so be it but lets get together with J-Man and Old School Dean Warthen and make a decision. This mix and match bullshit has got to go. The relievers need to know the plan of attack and so do Mets fans.

I don’t ask for much, I only want your trust and you know it don’t come easy”
