Is There More To the David Howard Departure from the Mets Than Meets The Eye?

With the ominous dark cloud of injuries and lack of overall pizazz that engulfs the 2013 version of the NY Mets, I should be concerned with the product that I and all Mets fans will be observing for better or worse this season but the thing that has me most intrigued about the New York Mets is why did David Howard leave the organization to head Madison Square Garden Sports?

When I heard that Howard was leaving the Mets to run the Garden sports properties I was taken by surprise to say the least. Howard has been a Mets exec for 20 years and in the last few years since the Madoff debacle, he has been the public face of the Mets Ivory Tower. Howard was outstanding at being the top talking head of ownership but then again following the awful displays of public speaking from Omar Minaya, Jeffy Wilpon and the rants of Freddy Skill Sets, those are not tough acts to follow, But Howard was the perfect front man for the club as he’s intelligent, articulate and able to spin the Mets angel better than any Capitol Hill spokesman.

I could be taking this whole departure way out of context; Howard could be leaving for a better position and more money. He could be leaving the Mets just because 20 years in one spot is a long time and he could want a new challenge.  But this being the Wilpon Mets, I always have the hint of disaster in the back of my mind.

Does Dave Howard know something is around the corner that could cripple the franchise again?  Does he see that Freddy Skill Sets crowing about all the cash he will have at his disposal after Michael Bourn signed with the Cleveland Indians as a heap of horseshit being that there is debt on the team, ballpark and a re-finance of SNY that could take a large chunk out of the organization’s ass?  Could it be he’s tired of going public about the ridiculous ticket and concession prices the Mets charge and just can’t put a happy face on a team that has a load of opening day tickets still available?  On a bit of a side note about ticket prices and concessions, the Boston Red Sox, one of the best baseball franchises in MLB, will see their 793 home sellout streak end the first week of the season. To counter that the Red Sox, THE BOSTON RED SOX!!!! Will cut the concession prices on food (buy 1 hot dog get 1 free) drink (5 bucks for a beer , 2 bucks for a hot chocolate ) and start 11 of the first 17 home games before 7PM so the cranks of Fenway don’t freeze their arses off in the April chill. Hello?????? Anyone home in the Flushing home office??????

Back to Dave Howard leaving, I wouldn’t question Howard leaving for MSG as nothing more than a corporate transfer going from one board room to another for a loftier title and higher pay but after reading that at least three other front office honchos will take over Howard’s tasks, it makes me think the club was caught off guard. Being that Howard was a 20 year employee of the organization wouldn’t you think that he would have gone to the Skill Sets and explain to them that he needed a new challenge a fresh start and the opportunity to run all the functions of the Gardens sports properties except for drafting, trading and constructing team rosters was too good to pass up, but before I leave I will help any way I can with finding my successor and showing he or she the ropes. That didn’t happen. We have a group of executives from different units reporting to, and this is where I come close to soiling myself, Jeffy Skill Sets. That is what has me the most frightened.

“PLACE YA BETS, NO MORE BETS”

The Mets front office is trying to put a happy face on this team of theirs but deep down I’m sure they’re doing shots of Maalox over the pitching staff.

Big Pelf’ Long Balls on Parade has to be alarming to Mets decision makers so much so that the name Bronson Arroyo has come up again as a Mets trade target. A deal for Arroyo or any real life honest to goodness starting pitcher should have been done this off season but either money issued or stupidity prevented any such deal from happening.

The old saw is “don’t put too much stock in spring training” and that’s fine when your names is Santana, or Lincicum or Seaver. But when you are a struggling starter like Big Pelf, OP and Maine Man, you need to show me why I should have confidence in you on the mound and so far as we get to a week before opening day my confidence in this pitching staff on a scale of 1-10 is about a 3.

Am I being overly pessimistic? You tell me. Let’s play the Mike Francesa Approved “Unnda/Ovah Game with the pitching staff. Please go to the comments and leave your picks.

Number of games Johan Santana will win in 2010? Unnda/Ovah 14

Number of wins combined for Big Pelf/OP/Maine Man? Unnda/Ovah 27

Number of innings combined for Big Pelf/OP/Maine Man? Unnda/Ovah 450

Number of different starting pitchers the Mets will use in 2010? Unnda/Ovah 8

Number of appearances by Vitamin Pedro in 2010? Unnda?Ovah 75

Number of saves for Frankie Rodz in 2010? Unnda/Ovah 33

Number of pitchers total used by the Mets in 2010? Unnda/Ovah 21

MONDAY MORNING QB’S ARE OUT IN FULL FORCE OVER MANNY

So let me get this straight all of the fans that wanted Manny to the Mets are now a bunch of assholes as the revelation that Manny was juiced comes to light. First don’t give the Skill Sets too much credit here for not signing Manny as they had no inside info on what we learned yesterday and the main stream sports media shouldn’t be laughing at fans who were pro- Manny, if anything they should be embarrassed that with all the clamoring for Manny to the Mets not one reporter in this city ever took the initiative to look into any allegations of Manny’s drug use. Jose Canseco who is the equivalent to the cops junkie snitch, made noise that Manny was into PED’s. Maybe if the reporters who go “tisk tisk you stupid fans” used their resources they may have had this story that would give their dying industry a boost it sorely needs.

Seeing that Manny is a Scott Bora$ client and that many of the PED positives have come from Bora$ clients maybe Congress should call Bora$ on the Hill to see what he knew and when he knew it?

It wasn’t a stellar performance by Big Pelf last night (the second straight start with no K’s has me worried) but he seems to be able to make adjustments during his start and that is a big positive. Last night he was pounding a way with his fastball low and he seemed to go primarily with the fastball and got a lot of ground balls in return. Pelf also went deep into the game by going 7 innings and he is 4-0 so let’s all put a happy face on this start.

It’s safe to take your D-Wright jerseys out of the closet. Our boy is back.

It will be a shame if J-Man gets suspended for bumping that tub of shit Bill Welke last night as Welke deserved a swift kick in the ass for his atrocious call of interference on Shit Victorino by Jose Reyes. I hope someone on the Mets files that elbow that the Poi Boy threw into Reyes for the next time the teams meet and plants a Rawlings in Doosharinos ribs. Same with the ball that went behind Wright, it’s payback time fellas’

Watching Carlos Delgado run is makes my hip hurt. I think J-Man will have to spot Delgado the rest of the year like two games on, one game off to keep him off the DL. The Mets have Tatis, and Murphy to man first to give Delgado time off.

After being used just about every other day Brain Stokes has become a forgotten man in the Mets bullpen. With Jon Niese getting the start tonight I’d venture a guess that Stokes may be the first guy up in the pen tonight.

So much for J-Man losing Shrek after pinch hitting for him looks like it was the kick in the ass he needed.

Watching Keith Hernandez mixing with the great unwashed in the centerfield food court was laugh out loud funny last night. Gary and Ron acted like Keith lost a bet with them and the payoff was doing something Hernandez hates, mingling with the Mets fan masses. Hernandez finally ended up in the Acela Club with his feet up and a glass of Chardonnay just how he likes it.

If you’re a Highlander fan and you booed Mariano Rivera last night you should hang your head in shame.

R.I.P Dominic Di Maggio, The Little Professor

Also best wishes go out to Jerry Remy as he fights a reoccurrence of lung cancer. I met the Rem Dawg last summer in Hyannis and that was a real pleasure. He will be off the Red Sox telecast for awhile but hopefully not too long Get Well Soon Rem Dawg!

Sorry about last night’s Pro Baseball Central for some reason the show wasn’t streaming and after a couple of attempts to fix it it just wouldn’t stream and since I’m an idiot when it comes to this stuff I couldn’t get it fixed but we will try again next week (fingers-crossed)
